Ever upgraded on DVC points

I have been a member from the very start 1991 and I have never received an upgrade and would never expect it. I don't often post and really don't have a horse in this race as my husband and I have never once in 25 years rented out our points. However, this has got me thinking about how people except so much today and expecially how everyone posts every little thing on social media. People are going to read this and just go ahead and ask for an upgrade. I'm sorry OP but I think it was very nervy of them to say that they realized the room was't going to suit their needs. What??? I very much agree they all members who rent out their points should be very careful and make sure no additional points are taken from them. Maybe this is something that should be addressed at a member meeting. I am also not buying the "first time at Disney" reason. Just my 2 cents.

Your friends may want to check their credit card. They may be paying for the upgrade. And since points are not returned if the reservation is cancelled the day of the reservation, you would lose your points anyway for those reservations that you made (not what they upgraded to).

And I wouldn't be making anymore reservations for these friends using my points.

Update...we just returned from dinner and not to get off topic but we had an excellent meal at GF cafe...anyway, after speaking with our friends they clearly didn't understand how things work when it comes to renting but made it very clear they are more than happy to pay for whatever points "Disney" takes from the account. With that said "Disney" still hasn't taken any points...so now I lay here more confused then before as the upgrade was done, their cc has not been charged as of now and if they are going to take points when will they do so....ugh..

I am glad they "understand" and have said they will pay you for whatever points may go missing.

I would imagine if points would be taken they would be taken immediately. I know when you make changes online or on the phone then the points are immediately taken. But can the front desk take DVC points when they are not dvc? As for cc is it possible they won't be charged until the end when they check out? Make sure they read over that bill on the last day.
I hope the rest of your vacation goes well.

They have to be able to since other people were charged when their renters upgraded, but I don't know how swiftly that happens. I'd imagine they'd have to have some way of verifying there are even enough points to take!

I agree! We rent points and I would never ask for an upgrade. I reserved what I want.

Just to clarify a couple things:

1) Disney resorts will occasionally give a complimentary upgrade to guests at non-DVC resorts. This is generally done for the resort's operational needs (resort is overbooked, etc), but presented to the guest as pixie dust. Point stays at DVC resorts are a different beast. DVC resorts are timeshares, not hotels, and point stays are the owners of the timeshare using room inventory that they own. Upgrades will usually only happen if the room you booked is not available because of a maintenance issue, and there's nothing else left in that room category to give you. Timeshares are designed to run at near 100% capacity, which also greatly decreases the possibility of being upgraded. In sum: upgrades aren't given out just for the asking. If a member wants an upgrade, they're expected to 'pay' for it with their points.

2) The scenario we're describing - renter asks for upgrade, points are taken from member's account - is most definitely not Disney/DVC policy. It should never happen. The policy is that only members can authorize the use of points from their account. However, people are human, and mistakes happen. And we've heard of this particular mistake happening on a number of occasions.

Now, is it possible that the front desk at SSR knew that there was a 2-bedroom free, that wasn't part of the member inventory, and decided to give these folks a huge blast of pixie dust? Sure. Hopefully, that's exactly what happened. We're just saying that there have been situations where non-members have asked for an upgrade and the points to pay for that upgrade were taken from the member's account, so it would be wise for the member to check their account.

The really weird thing that makes me skeptical of the whole pixie dust thing, is that according to his later post, they also asked for and were given an upgrade at AKV as well. Sure, it COULD happen once...and according to reports, has happened on fairly rare occasions. However, for it to happen to the same people twice on the same trip? Yep....skeptical.

I could see disney doing this for renters before owners even.

Its a known fact that many people rent points before they buy. That they rent and get hooked and decide to become owners or rent to try it out before they take the plunge... so upgrading a renter may mean they end up more likely to buy as the perks are now even better or that they now buy more points as they now want those bigger rooms

It may take a couple days for OP's points to disappear. The desk at the resorts is not DVC so they have to submit and it takes a couple days to get processed. We had a construction issue with a stay at BWV last year and were given 1 night of points back as compensation and the manager wrote that down and told me I wouldn't see them in my account for a couple days. They showed up in about 48 hours.

Strange a family of 3 needed a 2BR instead of the studio. I could see a 1BR being nice but a 2BR???? I wonder if they didn't want the kiddo sleeping on a pull-out in the studio?? OP should have put them at OKW. I only ever use our points for family and I think I will stick with that. Hate to have renters ask for upgrade.

Family or close friends for me, and I read them the riot act before the trip about not asking for upgrades.

Wow I hope your points weren't affected but like the others I'd be skeptical of it happening twice....and to a 2 bdr at that.

I don't understand how it wouldn't meet their needs...didn't they do any research on room types? They seem clueless on renting and points...do they realize the cost of the difference in points for a 2 bdr? Thing is. .if you needed those points at some point then the cost is so much higher to you if you have to do a cash reservation somewhere.

I would be so grateful to my friends for renting to me never mind asking for an upgrade.

Anyways let's hope it really is pixie dust. Or kick up a fuss to have any points that weren't authorized by you to be returned to your account.

Front desk at a resort has no skin in the sales game.

In doing a bit of research, the only thing I could dig up regarding the "R Room Only" designation on the reservation posted is that's apparently the designation given to cash room only reservations...which could mean a huge cc bill coming for your guests. Not saying that's what's going to happen, but it's possible.

We have had maintenance issues with our DVC room, sent to the front desk by the maintenance person, while setting up our room change it was noticed that we are DVC, no change for us, we were told that upgrades and changes are against DVC policy unless the room is uninhabitable.

On another occasion our guests added the DDP to their DVC reservation. The front desk canceled their reservation and made a new one with the DDP attached. Weeks latter I noticed that we had points in holding. The front desk had borrowed points for the new reservation and left the original points in holding.

If its not "Pixie Dust X2" I would hope its their CC charged over the owner's DVC points taken.
