Adding points to an existing DVC account

My wife and I bought into Polynesian this time last year. We've already paid it off and have gotten stronger interest than anticipated from family members wanting to come down. As such we were looking at buying additional points on top of our 200.

What issues are there with buying points on the resale/grey market as opposed to buying points direct from Disney? Can they be added to an existing account? Would we have two home resorts if we bought points direct from Disney for a different resort? Is Disney selling used points and where?

In looking at a few threads I am surprised that it appears that there are point values not in 100 point increments. Is it common for a seller to break up points and selling fractions of 100?

Disney does not sell USED points. All of theirs are full cost full use points with the $180+/- price tag.
You can buy resale points, not a grey market, real points, at 40-50% off Disney prices. Since you have paid the piper, you will still have all those amazing perks direct price get you. You can buy any where from 25 points up, 27, 38, 49, 155,... no need to buy in 100s. That was just a salesmen increasing he/her paycheck. If you buy at 2 resorts, yes you will have 2 home resorts. Points retain the home booking priority. 11 month at each home resort, BUT only with the points purchased at each. If you buy with a different use year, you will have 2 master contracts.

If you buy resale, make sure you have the title deeded the same way as your original contract. If it's the same UY and deeded the same, it will show up on the same account. We own 4 resorts (hopefully 5 if we get through ROFR with Vero) on 6 contracts (4 direct purchase & 2 resale), all on one membership.

Great info everyone....

So, it would be in our best interests to get the same UY on additional purchases then so we keep one Master Contract.

If we were to get points at a different home resort can we combine our points from Polynesian and that second resort for a reservation at that second resort we make 11 months out?

If you buy same UY but different resort (or same resort different UY), it will technically be a separate membership. You will be able to access both memberships from the same account though. If you buy same UY at Poly, they will be combined into 1 membership .

You will get differing opinions as to how much that matters though.

The answer to the combining points at 11 months question is no.

Okay, so we would have two buckets of points to drain and we can't drain them on the same reservation then.

Only points from 1 membership can be allocated to a single reservation then. If we buy more at Poly with that same UY we can grow that membership account but anything else and we create a second membership account that must be used separately from the original membership account.

You can buy other resorts direct and they are all different prices. OKW is $140pp direct.

If you plan on traveling together it makes sense to me to have all your points in one bucket. So I would buy more Poly. If you might like to stay somewhere else on a different trip, then get a different resort but keep the UY if possible.

Just my thinking if it were me...

You guys are exceptionally helpful!

So, 7 months out the different points from Resort A and points from Resort B can be combined for a reservation at any resort then?

Does Disney generally have points for sale from any resort or just the most recent one built???

If they're selling points from Old Key West were those points that the owner sold back to Disney or from a default/non-payment repossession? They can't be generating more points for resorts that they sold out 20 years ago can they???

One common way around this is to borrow or bank ever year.

Say you have 200 Poly and 200 VGF. You can use 400 at Poly this year by borrowing next years points, then use 400 at VGF next year, etc.

Same UY & titled in same names = new subcontract under existing membership.
Different UY = separate membership.

Ah, I stand corrected .

Life happens and people need to get out of DVC for various reasons. Correct, Disney can not create new points unless they add additional units.
Old Key West expires in 2042, UNLESS the original owner paid to expend their points to 2057. Any points for OKW that Disney sell direct now will have the 2057 end date.

When we just bought our add on, I wanted OKW to match my original contract but they offered me all of the other resorts. He said he had to check availability, but asked what I wanted.

What has the experience been like getting add on points from Disney? When we bought our points at Poly it was exceptionally easy with no complications.

I am guessing that availability for the smaller resorts is probably limited, i.e., Boardwalk, as opposed to OKW or SSR, but I'm sure there are other factors at play as well.

It depends on the resort and the use year...If you want to add on direct through Disney, they have to have points in your use year at the resort you want to buy in order for them to sell it to you. Sometimes, they will put you on a waitlist until they get those points through ROFR or foreclosure. If they have the points, it's as quick of a process as your Poly contract. If they don't, you might need to wait a while.

I don't have any personal experience, but based on what other people have posted, it seems to be guide dependent. I suspect that the guides are encouraged to push sales of Poly and Aulani, so they may or may not be forthcoming about your other options. Some guides may be more willing to sell you sold-out resorts than others. But I hear that once you can get a guide to agree to sell you a sold-out resort, the process is very easy. It may take switching to a more willing guide sometimes, or in some cases there really isn't any inventory available.

It's also not completely clear how Disney manages the inventory of the sold out DVC resorts. They do have (or used to have) waitlists for various resorts that are reportedly very long, but then people on the forum will randomly get offered VGF out of the blue. Some have even speculated that Disney has almost no inventory of anything, but they basically grab a contract out of ROFR when they make a sale (which is why they hold everyone's contract in ROFR for so long), which is an interesting theory.
