Bad Weather on Cruise

Hi! So we board Disney Dream tomorrow and it's a 3-day Bahamas cruise. The weather predicted is awful. I wouldn't mind rain but they're predicting thunderstorms 100% chance and there's apparently a tropical depression in the region that may possibly turn into a tropical storm during the weekend. What might the ship do in this situation? Is there any hope of diverting the route enough that we could have sunny sea days?

I wish it was only rain because that's ok but the top decks will probably be closed for thunderstorms which sucks.

Weather happens. Even on land-based vacations.

Our May trans Atlantic cruise had 5 DAYS (and nights) of extremely rough seas and cold (icy) conditions. Well, that's the northern Atlantic for you. They closed the port side deck 4 for those days. And I believe they also closed the pool deck some of the time (don't know for sure, as I don't do pools even in warm weather conditions).

Believe me, there was still plenty to do indoors during that time. You shouldn't be bored.

Typically, if there is a storm in the area where a ship is scheduled to be, the captain will sail around the area. You still might have a bit rougher seas than normal, but not like you're actually in the storm.

I am curious about the Fantasy. It left Jamaica on Wednesday afternoon traveling to Castaway Cay. The ship normally sails north going between Cuba and Haiti/Dominican Republic to get to the Bahamas. The storm is almost directly above Haiti/Dominican Republic. At this point the Fantasy should be around the same area. Ship trackers are way behind on the ship's last location.

Not intentionally. They rerouted based on the predicted path, then the storm turned and it was too late.

They always say forecasting the weather is not an exact science! I heard somwhere tho that Fantasy was using forecasts that weren't exactly mainstream???

Never heard that (maybe you are thinking about RCCL's Anthem debacle out of NJ?). That was the first time I ever saw this "European Model" thing that seems to be all the rage now. But regardless, hurricanes are extremely difficult to predict and can change course without warning. Hence why they say and have the "cone of uncertainty".

Let me try to put your mind at ease. I live in Central Florida, only about an hour from the Port. The newest information that has come out today is that this storm has basically been in a constant state of falling apart since last night. As the hours have gone on, this is what appears to continue to happen. With every hour, Invest 99 (the tropical depression in question) is dissipating. It is isolated showers for today. Praying you have better weather than predicted, but remember, you are on a Disney Cruise! I saw your ship on the news from the port this morning.

We've been on a few cruises during hurricane season. The most memorable was in between Ivan and Jeannie. We weren't even sure when we were heading to Port Canaveral if we would be boarding the ship there as the port was closed, or if we would be being bussed to Miami. We stayed overnight in Port Canaveral, still not knowing. The hotel we stayed at didn't have power, some of it didn't have a roof. It had been flooded, The rooms smelled. We made a run to Walmart and bought deoderizer, bottled water, etc. all the hotels around were in the same shape. we were lucky we had reservations and it was available. The restaurants didn't have water, so they had limited options. We woke up the next morning, and found out that the ship was able to dock, so we got to the port. We were on a 7 day Western Caribbean Cruise. We still lovingly refer to it as our Mystery Cruise. We had to out run Jeanie at every turn, and avoid Ivan.

We didn't get to go to any ports of calls that were scheduled, except Castaway Cay. We were the only ship to make it between Frances and Jeannie hitting it. We ended up going to Nassau, Grand Cayman, St Thomas, and Puerto Rico. We had a few rough nights at sea, but during the day, most of the time, the captain was able to keep us in the sun. Especially on sea days. They try very hard. Even if they have to alter the course, and go alternate routes.

They take the safety of the ship and passengers first. They want to get you where your supposed to go, but they want you to have nice weather as well. In all of the days I've spent on the ships, and we are up to our 10th cruise, that we just finished, we haven't had very many rainy days. And we tend to travel during hurricane season alot.

Enjoy your vacation. I bet your captain will do a great job.

I'm guessing it's better not to pre-pay for any non-DCL excursions during that season for that reason, then? What happens to your excursions? Just out of luck and money?

It depends on the refund policy for the private tour operator you are booking with. Many have very friendly refund policies. After all, they would really jeopardize any referrals from customers to alienate them. That said, there are some who have cancellation penalties (percentage of excursion cost or a flat rate).

That's an important question to ask when booking private excursions.

This is something you also need to check out in advance with on any travel insurance policy you purchase. What happens if...??? We just don't normally prepay for non DCL excursions.

I'm one that likes to prepay, even with non Disney excursions, however I ask them before hand what happens if the ship can't dock for some reason. During our Mystery trip we had a parasailing excursion booked in Key West and a Dolphin Swim booked as well at one of the stops, I think Cozumel, but can't remember. We didn't make it to either, and we had prepaid. Key West had it credited as soon as they realized we wouldn't be docking there, Cozumel was hit hard by the hurricane, and as soon as they were back up credited the money. As long as you book with reputable sources, you should be ok.
