It appears there has been a bit of tension on this board recently and it was brought to the attention of the Webmasters.
We support our moderators 100%. I wanted to stop by and explain a bit about how the forums work.
We have guidelines that have been in place for many years and we know they work well. One of our biggest challenges is applying them fairly and evenly.
A lot of the reason Webmasters exist is for exactly that purpose, to make sure that the guidelines are followed and applied fairly to everyone.
In terms of the present situation there are a few things we would like you
to know.

1. We may not like or agree with what someone posts but we pass it through 1
filter, does it follow the guidelines.
2. We are not concerned about the history of a particular poster unless they
have received previous violations.
3. We don't get involved with back stories, secret insults or what the
poster "really meant". Posts are taken at face value
4. Nobody is protected. The webmaster staff is completely separate from the
business side on purpose. A concerted effort is made to ensure the business
has no influence on the board moderation.

If you attack someone because of the reasons above, you will receive the violation.
You are more than welcome to place another poster on ignore. If you choose not to and attack them we look at it as a choice you have made.
Thanks for listening and I sincerely hope everyone can take a step back and enjoy the forums

Alex

Tony- we don't! If the post meets the guidelines it does. YOU have the choice to click the ignore button and you will never see their posts again. If you choose to read them and/or respond that is your choice.
We have people that walk the line and we try to apply common sense but pretty much we don't look for issues

Thanks, Alex.

I do have one question. Can you explain what constitutes a minor and major personal attack under item 13 of the guidelines for infractions?

Ok so (and this isn't sarcastic or anything) trolling is bascially allowed here unless it meets one of those guidelines? There's obviously one poster a lot of people find annoying but he doesn't break any rules. So what we would consider constant trolling is nothing that can be done?

I just don't understand why some obvious trolling threads are allowed, yet sarcastic comments risk deletion and points.

First, Nikki is awesome! I can tell she is level handed, no question. She is doing a fantastic job. She keeps the conversations going!! I have genuinely grown to like her in the time I was lurking.

My only concern is if the attacks on the show, people or their work become so negative they won't come out and interact. I don't know how much they posted here in the past, but in the months I was lurking it seems lately like they come, defend themselves, get disgusted and leave. I hope they come and chatter with us! I can't see them doing that if the work or choice of clothing are being picked apart regularly. Would you feel at ease on a board? So that's just my concern I wanted to voice.

I really want them here!!!

That is a fantastic point that I hadn't considered. I would thoml that the board rules would protect the team members also, so if it ever came to the point where a personal attack was made on one of the guys/girls, consequences would follow.

I know where is the line?? For example, if someone insulted Kylie, her clothes, anything, I would have to ban myself because I would be beside myself. I think she is a marvelous breathe of fresh air!!! I'd hate for her to read something here and choose to stop doing videos.

Is she exempt because she is not "official?" I know, I know. I posted the opposite stance last week, but when I read Ryno's and Craig's replies yesterday...it changed my mind.

There's really several ways to differentiate between the two and admittedly a bit of grey area and judgement. One way I would look at it is a social situation. If someone said something that made you go "oh man I can't believe they said that" it's in the category of a minor. If someone posts something that makes you go "OMG that was nasty" we are getting towards a major. Frequency can be another differentiation. If I come in to a thread and someone has already attacked someone multiple times or even on different threads, much better chance they get wacked with a major.

It depends on your definition of trolling. We weren't born yesterday and if someone is obviously causing a problem we will certainly take a look and apply the rules. You have the power though. If everyone puts them on ignore they will lose interest and go away. If you choose to engage why be surprised by the result. We assume you are an adult and you can choose what situations you will interact in.

This one is tough! I have known some of the podcasters for over 15 years and it's tough to see them being beaten up BUT people are allowed to post fair criticism. Pete would be the first one to agree with that. It's a public board. If you are going to be out in public you have to accept a certain amount of criticism and the podcast team understands that. The fine point of this whole thing is the personal attack rule. It doesn't apply to people outside of the board, for example I can post that I think a famous actor is ugly and stupid all day long but the podcasters are part of this board so the personal attack rules apply to some extent. The bigger problem for us is that a whole bunch of people want to pile on to defend them but they do it in a way that means we have to give THEM the sanctions. Please don't make us do that!

To build on Alex's last point- when you complain about another poster being negative and disruptive, YOU become negative and disruptive.

Seriously, use the ignore function and let it go.

So when you responded to a poster on this board with this:

"If you're looking for a more kid-centric show, I'll bet you can find one. But the constant jabs and complaints about the DIS Unplugged are growing pretty tiresome."

Were you being negative and disruptive?

I just don't understand what criticism/complaining is and isn't accepted.

I don't have anything to contribute other than it's the same thing as going to someone else's house/club/party ect what they say goes or you can just not participate.i'm sure this thread will get interesting to read fast.

The person that posted that did not receive sanctions for the post and the post was not deleted. Part of moderating these boards is guiding discussion and it's fine for a mod or WM to say "ok enough we have beaten this horse to death"
That is different than violating a guideline. I would agree with you the post did not violate a guideline and was not sanctionable and none was received. Let's say someone posted 32 threads in a row all talking about their hair being dyed blue. It's not really a violation but we are going to deal with it, obviously. Part of running a board.
