This rabbit hole gets really deep!!

So we have to buy a new washer and dryer...

Alaska Air Mall has Home Depot at 2pt/$ - we will use CFU for 1.5% (unless wiser minds suggest something better)...cover all bases when buying!

Another option would be to use the Ink to buy Home Depot gift cards and buy the washer and dryer that way. It would help satisfy a minimum spend as well as get you 5x/$ in rewards. However, you wanted to keep your business and personal interests separate so that's maybe not the right road. I think your plan definitely gets you there.

Gift cards are permitted via Alaska air mall?

I know some sites won't allow GCs to earn bonus miles (always YMMV).

Noobie question...My husband and I are thinking of each getting the southwest airline cards. If we each spend the $2000 in the first 3 months we will each get 50,000 points to spend on southwest. If we want to book a flight for ourselves and our 2 kids using points are you guys saying that the site may not have us all on the same flight...meaning as I'm booking a flight some of the other points fares may disappear? Also could my husband and I put the 50,000 points on each of our cards together for 100,000 points so that one person could buy the tickets at once rather than us each going on to buy them or do we buy them at once and just each pay with the points from our cards individually all in the same transaction? We have a rewards card now that we get 1.5% cash back on everything, charge what we can and pay it off each month but I'm liking the idea of using a different credit card for travel points better. My kids have never flown and I'm a nervous flyer but we are thinking of trying a trip to Disneyland (from Virginia) so flying is really the only convenient way to make it happen.

Thanks!!!

You would be much better off having either your husband or yourself apply for both of Southwest's Personal Visas (Plus and Premier), rather than both of you opening one.

You cannot transfer points from one account to the other without paying Southwest a transfer fee, but you can book flights for using your points for other people (e.g. your husband can use his points to book a flight for you).

Also, if you earn 110,000 Companion Pass Qualifying Points in a single calendar year (Jan-Dec), you will be awarded a Companion Pass with Southwest. This pass allows you to have a designated companion fly for free with you anytime you fly Southwest for the remainder of the current calendar year and the next full calendar year (even when your flight was paid with points). You can change your designated companion up to 3 times per calendar year.

Your points from your Southwest Visa are CPQP, so once you've completed the minimum spend on both cards, you'll have 104,000 points (50k bonus x 2+ 2k points for minimum spend x 2). You're only 6,000 CPQP away from CP, and there are many ways - some free - to easily earn the last 6,000 points.

Regarding points fares "disappearing": Southwest is rather unique in airline miles/points systems in that it allows you to book a seat on the flight with points as long as a seat is available. The amount of the flight in points, however, is directly tied to the dollar amount of the fare. So there may be 2 WGA fares remaining for your flight at X price - 2 of you could book your flights at that price (in points), and the other 2 would have to book at the next available fare. (Note that for this reason, it's in your best interest to search for your flights for 1 person and making sure it's the same price as what is shown for 4).

I think you all got my quite obsessed now! :worship:I've been checking out the united website and have a goal to fly to hawaii first class round trip for free! I wish I knew of this sooner! My husband and I are about to buy a house so after we do, game on !!!!!!!

My first class flights to Hawaii were not free using points and miles. I had to pay $5.60 per person each way in taxes and fees :lmao:

If it were me and I needed to spend $500 at Home Depot on an appliance, I'd probably buy $500 in Home Depot gift cards from Staples with my Ink card. Then use the gift cards to buy whatever I needed at Home Depot. You spend $500 on a card you need to spend money on anyway to get a bonus plus you earn 2500 Ultimate Reward points in the process. Especially if I'm trying to meet a spend. The combo of the Freedom Unlimited 1.5% + Alaska Air Mall portal (for a $500 purchase from home depot) nets you 1000 Alaska miles and 750 UR and doesn't move the needle on your Ink spend.

Now, maybe Alaska miles are more valuable to you - in which case that's certainly something to take into consideration. And if you're really looking to keep business and home separate, using the Ink may not be the best option. It's really about what's the best choice FOR YOU. For me, if I have a minimum spend to meet pretty much ALL of my expenses go toward meeting that. Come hell or high water I'm not letting my credit score take the hit of a hard pull and miss getting my bonus miles because I didn't meet my spend.

YMMV in terms of getting extra portal points for gift cards (Alaska air mall, ultimate reward mall, etc) but I can assure you that if you order directly from Staples, gift cards earn at the 5X rate. My entire October Disney trip was paid for via Disney gift cards bought through Staples online. It's one way that I maximize my return.

Using Ink to buy gc for 5x is great, but one consideration of buying a $500 appliance with GC is that you lose out on the extended warranty credit cards provide... Do make a decision to see what is more important though... i typically use my GC on disposable stuff that wont touch warranty...

Just received my new CSR today via UPS next day. Apparently Chase is using expedited shipping for all CSRs, without being requested. Luckily I'm subscribed to My UPS, so I was notified.

The card is similar to CSP, same weight, but a tad darker. No info on activation so it may be shipping activated. It's already showing up online when I check Chase.

Now to pay off my Hawaii cruise and book some other travel for 3x points! Woohoo!

I own an appliance repair company. :rolleyes1

Perhaps the GC would be the way to go. We would be buying $1k at least probably more. It's not "mission critical" to do this to meet spend reqs - but every way to maximize point return is critical - as we spend $5k+/month on typical business operation costs.

I do like the way you all think. :teacher:

We got ours today too- so excited! I called to see if they needed to be activated, and he said he was making a note that they were received and activated. I also checked on our statement closing dates. Weird, different dates, but we applied the same day!

My husband's card is 9/12. Applied online
Mine 9/21 Applied in branch

We'll meet the min spend on hubby's card first. I'm thinking I'm just a few weeks away from 100,000 UR points! Charging a disney trip tomorrow...

Nice!!

I called yesterday to confirm that our Chase cards went through. Can't wait to get them! I have figured that if I rearrange our savings a bit and pay off the cruise as soon as the cards arrive, I should have all our miles lined up to buy our 6 businessfirst seats the day they become available in mid October. I think those seats are worth more than the interest I am getting LOL.

My daughter was so sweet yesterday when I asked her what we should do if I couldn't get all 6 business class seats. She said that she and her brother didn't deserve "big seats" yet, and they should stay together in economy. Of course, leaving an 11 and 13 year old in economy while the adults are in business reminds me too much of Home Alone, but it made me that much more determined to get everyone upgraded because she was so sweet about it.

Hi, I've been casually reading this thread over the past few days. I'm fairly new to the credit card/points game. I've had a SW card for the past few years that I use a lot and it has provided many free flights for us. I'm intrigued by the CSR card. I think it would be great for us because we take one big trip to Europe each year (DH is British) and a few smaller trips throughout the year (to Disneyland of course!). I'm wondering, how to people get their airfare to Europe completely covered by points? Isn't there always a pretty hefty tax/fuel charge that must be paid by cash? Also, if you book hotels with points, do you have to pay the tax separately?
I'm thinking I will pop into my Chase branch tomorrow to see if I can get the card!
Thanks to everyone for all the great info here!

The airfare to Europe isn't completely covered by miles as you do have to pay taxes and fees on award travel. However, the taxes and fees vary by the airline. British Airways is pretty high. My last few tickets in first class using BA Avios miles were between $400 and $500 or so each way. I look at it like purchasing a ticket for less than economy price and upgrading to first with the miles. United's taxes and fees are less. Our flight back home from Paris on United in first class was $55 in taxes and fees. I've never paid taxes and fees for hotel stays. We've used Marriott points to stay at the St, Ermin's in London and there were no taxes. We've used Club Carlson points for stays in Edinburgh, Dublin and London and no taxes or fees. We are using some IHG points for a stay in Inverness and no additional taxes or fees. The only way to completely avoid paying out of pocket would be to use the points as cash which isn't always the best value. I have done that though with Citi Thank You points when I couldn't find flights I wanted using award miles. The points worked like buying a ticket for cash. You can do that with UR points too.

@calypso726 Have u applied for the CSR yet? I guess going in branch, getting an preapprove letter can get u around the 5/24 rule... seems like a lot of DP confirming that. Your still in luck! lol

Similarly to Calypso726, the fees I'm looking at to Barcelona are only $5.60 per ticket on United.

A lot of people are doing this well past the 5/24. Read someplace where a chase card holder had like 20/24 and got approved by going in branch to check if their computers have a pre approval. (If yes chances are really good of getting card.) They had a pre approval and BLAMO approved for $32k!!

What I have read is that the online checker and in branch are two completely separate things.

Still processing all of this info.
