Which hotel would you stay in Tropicana or Grand Legacy?

We are one month out from our trip and we have 2 hotel reservations one at the Tropicana and one at the Grand Legacy. The Grand Legacy looks like a nicer place to stay, with a what looks like a better pool, however the reservation is $200+ more than the Tropicana. The Tropicana reviews much better on Trip Advisor. but doesn't offer breakfast and looks dated.

Any opinions from people who have stayed at either resort. It is my husband, daughter, (10 turning 11), and myself. We are at Disneyland 5 days and then attending Mine-con at the Anaheim conference centre on the weekend.

TIA

We stayed at the Trop last March and it really wasn't bad at all. In fact, the inside of the room was modern...not run down at all. The rooms were a tad small. We couldn't do more than 1 night there with the 5 of us. Can't say much about the Grand Legacy other than I know it's been refurbed lately and it has a nice pool area. At least, nicer than the Trop.

I've stayed at both and find them about equal. For $200 less I would most definitely stay at Tropicana. Plus it's a bit closer to the crosswalk!!!

Dis podcaster Tom Bell just did a podcast on the Grand Legacy. I thought his review only made it sound ok and rather expensive. Find the podcast page here, and I'm sure there's a link. I've stayed at the Tropicana once, but it was years ago and I wasn't a fan. We had a ground floor room. I thought it was smallish, dark, and noisy. There was also an ashtray right outside our door, and most times we came out of our room someone was standing there smoking. Parking was tight and front desk staff was rude. We have chosen not to return. Like I said though, this was quite a number of years ago, maybe 9. My mother-in-law and her husband have taken their other grandkids there more recently a couple times and said it was an ok experience, but they prefer the Fairfield. My go-to place is Hojo.

For $200 more I would stay at Tropicana. For full disclosure I've never stayed Tropicana but have at Grand Legacy before and after the change. Don't get me wrong I really like it there , but not for that much more.

We've been trying to stick to Wyndham properties to get points for free stays since we drive often and parking fees add up so fast , HOJO is our go to even after just one trip so far there a few months back.

Tropicana is fairly popular here so I don't think you can go wrong. We were booked there for a good deal until HOJO opened up for Labor Day weekend for us.

How much time are you spending in the hotel?

Is the Tropicana "dated"? yeah...it's a 1960s era motel. The rooms have been updated (we were actually there a few years ago when the rugs/furnishings were being replaced..I forget which visit, but it was somewhere between 2009-2011), but they aren't anything fancy. They are clean and comfortable, though. I do miss the breakfast they used to have included, but we make a grocery stop on our first day so it really isn't a huge deal. We aren't huge breakfast eaters.

We have stayed at the Tropicana 4 times now, with a 5th trip planned there. We've always had clean rooms and great service. The proximity to DLR can't be beat, especially at that price point, IMO.

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I have stayed at the Grand Legacy (formerly Ramada Maingate-At the park) several times and I love it. I have never stayed at the Tropicana. I have noticed the increase in price since the name change and completion of the refurb.

We were going to book at a different hotel this trip, to save the $$. We did some research and decided to keep our reservation at the Grand Legacy. Free Wifi and the continental breakfast won us over. Five days of breakfast for my family would end up costing us about $150 plus whatever the WiFi charge would be.

We got an email about the prepay and save 15% discount for this month and took advantage of that as well. We ended up paying $690 total for 5 nights. (We are staying Sunday-Thursday next week).

Just stayed at the Grand Legacy (and listened to Tom Bell's podcast review) earlier this week. Its good if you can get it cheap. Often the rates drop as you get closer to your stay so book the Tropicana now but keep an eye on Grand Legacy prices. They might drop to 99 a night the week before your trip.

DD and I stayed at the Tropicana in Feb (funny enough we also had a reservation at the Grand but decided on the Trop) and it was very nice. and did not feel dated. Clean, quiet, friendly staff, kept our bags in their storage room on arrival day and also on departure day while we went to the parks. I have 2 photos of the room in my report, I did not take photos of the outside but it was just fine. The pool always had a few people in it and there are chairs in the sun and under cover.

I think they're comparable. We're a family of 5 and the deluxe rooms are a better "fit" for us at the Grand Legacy. When we stayed at Tropicana, we had to move some furniture around. We didn't use the pool at Tropicana, but the Grand Legacy pool is fairly nice for a parking lot pool. ALWAYS check the rates at Grand Legacy periodically leading up to your trip, I think the 3 or so times we've stayed there, we've always gotten a cheaper rate as closer to our travel dates. They also send out emails, if you get on their list, with discount codes. If you have an AP they offer a room discount with early check-in, late check out. The times we've stayed there without an AP we found that they were sticklers for their 3 or 4pm check-in time, which was really annoying. So we usually stay there the trips when we have an AP.

We like Grand Legacy, and I was just looking at Tropicana on TripAdvisor, but the photos of the giant roaches put me off forever.

Thanks for all the input I think we are going to stick with the Grand Legacy and watch for deals as it gets closer, it looks like they have a few $99 nights at the end of August, beginning of September. They also have a 20% off code right now that is good for a couple of our dates, not the whole trip.

We have not stayed at Tropicana, but we have stayed at Grand Legacy in June. We found it convenient to have breakfast at the hotel. The highlight of the hotel for us though was the rooftop lounge with live music, beautiful views of the parks and great fireworks viewing. The staff at the hotel was great too, very friendly. We did not see any bugs and trust me I pull up the sheets and look behind furniture with a flashlight at every hotel I stay at. If you factor in buying breakfast (if you stay Tropicana) for 5 days, the $200.00 difference isn't really all that much of a difference.

I just arrived home from a week at The Tropicana. It was just my granddaughter and I but it was perfect for us. It's so close to the parks has a good size pool the rooms seemed to be a bit dated but the room was clean the beds were comfortable. The mattresses were firm which I loved. The staff was very friendly.
There is no free breakfast but we just went down to Panera bread and picked up some bagels and a few days brought back muffins from thw the bakeries in the parks. There is a IHOP right near by we ate there one night a McDonald's which my granddaughter was happy about and a pizza place called Pizza Press. We had pizza there twice it was delicious. I would stay at the Tropicana again without hesitation. I got a good rate. The price was under $900 for 7 nights.

We're staying at Tropicana right now. I liked that I was able to book a king room without it being an expensive suite - or worse a request that couldn't be granted! - the bed was super comfortable and found the room to be very quiet. Parking is $12/night and since we only have the car for our first 2 nights of our 5 night stay it was super easy to just pay those nights of parking at check-in. I even really liked their coconut shampoo and conditioner. The only weird this is the stand up shower stall with my biggest pet peeve - a shower head pointed in to the back wall! The water pressure was knock you over strong which was AMAZING for me (I can never rinse anything out of my hair in hotels due to poor water pressure). Overall we're very happy with our room. We're even in a little section with a mini "interior" hall and have a balcony off our room

I'm thinking of booking a room at Grand Legacy next week for a quick trip. Was the prepay discount from their newsletter sign-up?
