The Running Thread - 2016

All of the runners looked amazing and it was fun to watch the spectators sprint and try to keep up.

I thought this was the funniest part of watching the women's marathon. This was my first time watching a marathon, so I didn't know that was a thing! Is that a thing? I'm like, why are people running beside them?

Many of the bottles were filled with a mix of fuel and fluid specific to each runner. They get their calories from the mixture as opposed to taking the time to eat gels or bloks. It's very similar to what the open water swimmers do to get their nutrition too.

This makes total sense to me now as to why they have to go to their flags for their hydration. I learn something new every day here!!

ATTQOTD: Does holding up my pants count? LOL. I bought these clearance capris and was so excited to wear them the next day. It was a short run so I didn't want to run with my belt, so I have this Roo Pouch. It's basically tucks into your pants and has a magnet closure to stay put. Apparently, the magnet was too heavy for my "oh that's why they were on clearance" capris. Pants were sliding down IMMEDIATELY. LOL

ATTQOTD: I'm another boring one. I too can't remember ever carrying anything unusual during a run.

ATTQOTD - Women's gymnastics - never disappoints, and this year was no exception. I also really enjoyed the track 7 field competitions.

Don't care for Bolt. He really needs to experience something in his life to teach him humility. I also had to mute my TV more times than I could count. The poor sportsmanship shown by Brazilian fans throughout the Olympics really soured me on the country. If that is a part of their culture, I am fine never visiting Brazil.
I won't go to the point of saying I dislike him, but I don't have any strong liking for Bolt either. Just neutral I guess. It got a little tiring hearing everyone raving and non-stop talking about him. And I so agree with the bolded. The example I remember specifically was during the men's floor exercise final when they had their 2 gymnasts in 2nd and 3rd place and the American was the last one up. Each time he landed a tumbling pass or a skill with a step or other mistake, they would cheer. The commentator tried to play it off as they weren't cheering for mistakes but rather supporting their athletes, but that was such a lie, and how is it really any different? You can show support for your country's athletes without cheering for others making mistakes.

And I can't find the post to quote at this moment, just saw someone else quote it, but I agree with @Slogger 's comment about the spectators sprinting next to the athletes during the marathon. I noticed it during the men's and thought it was so funny! It looked like some of them were trying to take pictures, like "hey, I'm running right next to an Olympic marathoner right now!"

YAY! I'm a run-enabler! Did you see the medals this year? Spoiler alert below. The little pumpkin guy is one of the medals and a pumpkin is the other and you can attach them together like he's carrying the pumpkin OMG!!! I'm waiting to see how the weather is before signing up for the Chicago one again. But you know I'm majorly tempted.

Oh and edited to add: grab a pumpkin with a good stem/handle. It makes it easier to do a "football style hold" and kind of rest your hand on the handle lightly.
That's adorable! I'm definitely excited for it. I will try and pick one with a good handle for football holding.

Do any of the times I "run" an almost 40 lb kid to the potty in public when she decides she needs to go "right now" count? Because I think I may have hit a personal record the one time I had to snake all the way out the full Ariel Ride line over to the Rapunzel bathrooms while she was yelling "I HAVE TO GO." (And then she didn't have to go, she just was worried about the sea witch.)

For a year and a half, I almost exclusively trained with a double jogging stroller (I honestly couldn't even dream of doing that anymore haha). I wasn't carrying anything, but I most certainly was pushing . . . a lot! I remember loading that stroller with countless toys, fruit snacks, crackers, sippy cups, books, and anything else I thought would keep my two kids happy on my run!

Probably have mentioned this before, but a gun. A while back, there used to be a small prison about 4 miles from where I live and they had two inmates MIA. I run early in the morning (i.e. dark times) so I (legally) carried a handgun until both with caught.

Woah! That's intense!

Strollers are no joke! Just pushing my son in a stroller for 0.25 miles (he hated strollers - thank goodness I didn't get a BOB thinking I'd run with him) was tough. So I'm always impressed by people (moms and dads) running with strollers!

I noticed that during men's gymnastics too. Nice try, NBC. That happened too many times to be coincidental.

That was hilarious during the marathon. One guy was trying to film while riding a bike. Another one on a bike got hit with a water bottle when the runner tossed it.

QOTD: What was your favorite moment from the 2016 Olympics? Did you get to watch the marathon (mens/womens)?

ATTQOTD: I only got to watch a few events this year. I watched the bike race the first weekend it I thought it was amazing. I did not have the opportunity to watch a single running event, and I am very sad about that. Guess I will have to watch replays if it looks like I missed something special.

Final Flood Update: So, just incase I have stated, our home is safe. I spent the weekend helping friends and family gut their homes. After doing that all day, it was just getting home, bath, food, and sleep. I have done 20 milers that seemed easier than the labor I have done over the last few days. I have not run in 10 days, but I should be able to get a few TM miles in this afternoon.

If you have a race time for a race you recently completed, please repost it as it is likely I may have overlooked it, and the same for any new races waiting to get on the main list. I am looking forward to getting things back to normal this week.

Boring day for me on the QOTD, I didn't watch any Olympics this year. I have no cable any more so I missed it all. I wish I got to watch many of the events but I survived.

QOTD: What unusual item have you carried during a run that isn't something you normally run with?

ATTQOTD: I once ran a beer mile relay. You had to drink the beer the relay runner brought to you and had to bring the next person a beer. The tricky part was trying not to shake up the can to much. It wasn't that it was a difficult thing to run with, just unusual.

Looking forward to everyone's response on this. Hopefully someone ran to the store for a gallon of milk and ran a mile or so back home with it.

I usually can't run with anything in my hands but on really hot and humid days I will run with a towel to try and keep the sweat out of my eyes, and for this year's Disney marathon I ran with my GoPro.

LSUlakes- I am happy to hear that everything is OK at home.

Ooooh, ooooh!!! Meee, meee! I win this!!!

I was doing a run in my neighborhood three weeks ago when a friend of mine blanket-messaged a bunch of us, frantic because her little dog had run out the front door when she was bringing groceries in. I was in the vicinity of her house, and sure enough - I came across The Gus rolling around in a patch of grass. He's a six-pound Yorkie, so I picked him up and ran with him under my arm the two miles to her house!

It sounds intense, but these inmates were in on minor stuff (robbery, theft, etc) no murders. However there are my fellow neighborhood runners (many of them women) that also kept their morning runs. So should the scenario arise, we'd have some protection.

I'm surprised I'm not the only one that's done a store run. Target is about 5 miles from my parents house using a greenway trail. One morning I decided to run there, buy a quart of creamer and run back home. By the end of the run I was unhappy with my choice, A pint would have been much better.

I've done a store run before...it just turns into a store walk on the way back. I always end up with just enough stuff to not want to run back. As long as I hit my desired workout before going in it works as a good cool down.

Can you update my races in October?

Can you remove my Marine Corps and Medoc Mountain Marathons
I deferred Marine Corps till 2018 (boo for lottery races where you can't link bibs so only 1 or 2 people out of a group get in)
My waitlist for Peak to Creek Came through so I will be doing that on Oct 29th Can you update my goal time for that to Sub 3:30
