The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

I can't remember exactly when or why I found the disboards. I was probably googling something. I think I found this section of the forum through a trip report maybe? It was still under WISH. I definitely didn't know about it when I ran WDW marathon and Dumbo in 2013. I was a lurker until a few months ago. When I signed up for Lumiere's Challenge I decided it was a good excuse to join!

QOTD: To build off of yesterdays QOTD, what other forms of social media (Forums, Facebook, twitter, ect) do you use to read and discuss running related topics?

I follow a few running-related things on social media but don't contribute much. My favorite thing is probably when a race has designated hashtags. I like to see what others have posted on Twitter or Instagram! More lurking!! :D

I'm not a lurker and I've been running in a while, but I know at the beginning, there is a tendency to think you're not a "real runner." Especially if you are slower or you run/walk, you can feel like you don't belong in a running group. There are a select few runners who make people feel that way, but it has been my experience that they are very few and far between.

Good question. For me it's mainly that as someone very new to running, I've learned so much from reading the posts but haven't had anything very insightful to add. I've been more active on the Facebook pages where I could throw my 2 cents in for what it's worth, but this forum seemed a little more intimidating - probably due partly to my tech-illiteracy. Right now I'm not even sure if I'm quoting you and replying correctly :-) But everyone has always seemed very kind (one of the things I've found to be true about runDisney folks all over and even the running community in general) so I figured I'd chime in at the Calling-Of-The-Lurkers

See I did that wrong... going back to fix quote... ☺️
She seriously has a gift for TRs. They are visually organized and fun.

Well, welcome to this thread!

The fear of posting for me is akin to walking up to a group at a reception or party and stepping into a spot to join the conversation. Not one of my skills in person either, LOL. Or here's the big one: What if they don't like me? It takes a little nerve to overcome shyness for me even on the web. It's silly, I know. But I've seen people be very mean on forums, and when you post, you put yourself out there as a target.

It took WAY more tech skill before they updated the site to quote and reply and insert pics, too. Once the site was updated, I could participate more. I'm still learning. And look, I misquoted your quote. Oops.
I'm as introverted as they come and I have shared my story many times so I won't bore everyone again.

I can't speak for everyone on here but this "running thing" and a lot of the people on here have helped change my life with all their support. I will always pay it forward. That's why I called out all the lurkers. It makes me feel just as good helping people as it does to finish my own races. I'm sure it sounds over the top sappy but oh well.

It doesn't matter in this thread if your a Boston Qualifier or brand new. It doesn't matter if you can work the website or not. All that matters is that you are here to improve yourself and open to the feeling of accomplishment. So ask your questions. If you feel uncomfortable doing it on here send me a PM and do it in private or ask me to and I will if you don't know how.

I get fired up about this stuff, sorry.

So I just had to share the race results from this morning/afternoon. I ran a 5k with my 9 year old daughter today. About 2 months ago we ran one and she finished in 32:00. Today she ran it on 29:44! I totally let her set the pace, tagging along right behind or beside her. I could feel we were moving along at a good clip. Just so proud of her effort!

The weather was interesting. A thunder storm postponed the race for an hour, as we sat trapped in the car. It cleared up and we got a 15 minute warning and then we were off. The course was one huge puddle but I think that helped. She was so focused on spraying me with water I do not think she realized how hard she was running. Lots of fun and I am so proud of her.

That's awesome. Such a good pace. It sounds like you have yourself a natural runner in your hands.

ATTQOTD: The only social media I use is Instagram. I do have a strava account and recently got a Garmin so looking forward to figuring out how to sync those two together.

Could use a little help with a question. A running friend of mine is going to be at WDW at the same time as me and we both will be training for a marathon in November. I'm staying at AoA and he's staying at Poly. I've found places to run at AoA, but sure of Poly... I'll have a vehicle so I could meet him in the mornings to run. My question is, any routes around the poly? If I drive to meet him could I Park there and potentially leave the car there during the day and drive it back after we leave the park for the day. Could potentially just change after our run and meet DW at a park... Any help would be appreciated

When you say park 'there'... do you mean the Poly lot or the main MK lot? I don't think you can get into Poly without a reservation. It's easy to get to from the MK lot, though.

Not sure how old this is, and it starts are the Grand Floridian, but I think it's the same as posted at Poly:

You could either pick him up and go back to AoA because I think there is more room to run there or you can give him the info for your car and let him get you a parking pass at the Poly. Have him give it to you to keep in your car and then you can freely park at the Poly the whole time you're there if you want. There are places to run between Poly and GF obviously and you can even make your way through the TTC to the Contemporary, like the like Marathon route. But to solve the parking issue just get the pass for your car and make sure you switch it when you go back to your hotel. :teeth:

How do y'all time intervals when you're doing training? Every plan for beginners of course suggests to do x mins walking/y mins jogging, and that definitely works for me, but I just wanted to know what your favorite apps were (especially the ones that talk to you/work well when listening to Spotify!) or whatever other kind of methods. I don't want to have to count to 60 over and over while I'm trying to focus!

I have a Garmin 220... it has a run/walk feature built into it. You can set the intervals for multiples of 15 seconds and it will alert you (vibrate and/or beep) when it's time to run or time to walk. And also flash it on the screen what interval you are on, and there's also a data screen with the countdown timer for the current interval. Handy when you skip one, or lose track while catching a pokemon when you go to start back up if you were in a run interval or a walk one. ;)

This. I'm here to answer questions as well. I remember when I was new and had no clue what I was doing. The running community is amazing and supportive. If you encounter someone who is elitist, a jerk, or puts you down, they do not represent us all.

Wow! Is it bad that I am jealous of a 9 year old?

Oooh! I want to try this!

I used to use the Galloway apps for that, but now I have a Garmin 220.

And that's pretty much all the motivation I need. Immediately upon deciding that, I hit the gym for the first official C25K workout... and it totally killed me. I had to give up halfway through. That's how incredibly out of shape I am! I know that April is a while away, so I definitely want to make sure I get a few 5Ks in before then, but right now I just wanted to find a place where I could get some kind of support! My friends and family are excellent, but they have NO idea why I would subject myself to running :rolleyes2 So here I am! I'm really excited to find this little community here on the Disboards.

Welcome! You've come to the right place for support. Congrats on getting started with C25k. It's okay that you couldn't complete the whole workout, just do as much as you can for now, or make your own shorter intervals to do for awhile. Eventually you'll make it through the whole workout and it will feel great! (The accomplishment will - you'll probably still feel tired.)

That's awesome! I'm glad she had a great race and that you got to share that time together. It's a great idea to do a race together each season - I may have to try that idea with my daughter.

I'm pretty sure every resort or group of resorts have new balance running trails. As the picture above shows that's what a running trail sign looks like and that should be the current trail around the GF and Poly.

Also like @Chasing Dopey said they don't normally let you park at the poly without a reservation. You can try though, sometimes they are nice and will let people in but not always.

I also have a Garmin 220 that does intervals but it's obviously pricey if you only want a basic interval timer. You can just buy a small clip on interval timer for around $20. Galloway sells one on his site but there are plenty of others out there. Just search Amazon for interval timer. Lots of free apps too. I used Runkeeper at one times years ago and you could play your own music with it. I've never really used Spotify so not sure on it.

Ok guys, I'm starting to get seriously peeved off! My 5k tonight was cancelled due to lightning! That's like 3 in a row now. :(

Uh-oh... are you signed up for Wine & Dine?

I also use my Garmin. But if you want to save money, I think there are also some regular watches that you can program intervals into that will beep. You can also get a timer to clip to your waistband through JeffGalloway.com.

Okay, I'll get the ball rolling on the monthly report, since I'm done:

Running Miles - 71.37
Running Time - 11:55:07
Average Running Pace - 10:01/m

This is a monster for me, since I'm coming back from ITBS. (Last month was 18.02 miles total.) I did two important things. First, I dropped the running portion of my intervals down to allow more recovery time, and worked harder to stay in zone 2. I'm still 1:30 short of where I was, but there's no hurry. I increase it :15 each week if there are no warnings. (That 10:01 pace is actually a surprise to me. It's really encouraging.)

Second, I picked up Brian Martin's "Running Technique" on Kindle. I promised an update on this, and I do think it's made a difference. He goes beyond running form (hence 'technique'). Basically, he talks about getting your hamstrings and glutes to fire right before your foot hits the ground. (This isn't easy to figure out, btw, but worth the attention and effort.) I think I was very guilty of trying to engage those muscles during the backswing, and using the time on the ground as rest, rather than the moment to spring forward. I don't know if that made sense, but I do recommend the book. It's a quick read, and while repetitive, does get you thinking about what's happening while you run. While he emphasizes the importance of strength training, he only gives the basics on some things to do and focus on. All still really good, though.

(I also added in some Active Isolated Stretching. I don't know how much that has made a difference, but compared to the old static stretching, feels pretty darn good.)

Best news: I haven't had any ITBS warnings in weeks, my ankles are not stiff in the mornings like they used to be, and DW says my butt looks great.

What? :D

Monthly totals:

Running - 202 miles
Average Heart Rate - 140 BPM - up from 135 last month, but it has been HOT! :scared:
P90X on 18 days - so 13:26 in cross training work

I am hoping to keep my base in the 45 miles/week range until my Dopey training begins in the middle of September.
