Canadian Buffoon's Disney With a Teen Vacation - 08/13 - The Wrap

The plan for the day was to enjoy a leisurely breakfast,
and then wander around "old Montreal".
I'd been there before, but... well....
I had to have something for you guys, didn't I?

Thanks! I've never been to Montreal. I don't normally like shopping but a lot of those little shops looked really interesting.

She has yet to hit me upside the head
when I do this.

So is the Canadian equivalent of a skelp round the lugs?

And I was dying for some eggs Benedict.

I didn't know the eggs were hard boiled.
I thought they were going to scramble them
or possibly make an omelet.
But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Do all Canadians love eggs? The reason I ask is I can't stand eggs poached, fried, boiled or scrambled and when we went to Western Canada I had great difficulty getting egg free breakfasts. Even when I finally ordered a breakfast item at Subway that didn't mention eggs they sneaked an egg in anyway.

I was intrigued by the juxtaposition
of the old and new buildings.
I love a good juxtaposition!

Gelato.
No way I'm passing that up!
I can share in this food love. Gelato is so good! What flavour did you get?

I popped into a couple of art galleries.
But the prices were (as usual)
higher than I wanted to pay.
Good art is expensive.

This reminds me of when I was looking at some fabulous sculptures at the Fairmont Empress. I particularly liked one that happened to have a $30,000 price tag. When I made some excuse about difficulty in getting it back home the lady replied "Don't worry we ship!"

I'm including this updated pic of Luna,
just so you can see that even
with a busted leg, she's still smiling

Aww - too cute! Good to see her looking so happy!

Well, crap. I read the whole thing, got all of my clever smart donkey remarks figured out and multi quotes queued up, and POOF, my cursor froze up (something I've struggled with on and off for a while- driver issue?). BAM! All gone.

Loved all the old town stuff, especially the narrow alley shots and cafe fronts. Yes, the duck risotto looked like regurgitated stomach contents, but I trust you that it was amazing. Quite possibly overly so and too much of a good thing. A photo talk can be quite cathartic, as can gelato. Glad you had a nice time by yourself indulging us with your photographic prowess.

Hi! I'm sorry I never got around to commenting on the last update. Summer is super busy and exhausting.

Not to worry! I totally get that.
Plus, what with it being so brief,
you have to maximize the time.

I decided to read and quote at the same time this time so hopefully I can get this in before nap is over.

Go! Go! Go!

Good woman you have there!

The best.
Except when she's mad at me.
Then she's not as much fun.

(Not that I don't usually deserve it.)

Me? Why thank you my dear.

And you're welcome.

Just a little.

I really, really need to take notes.

The croissant looks yummy.

That croissant was amaze-balls!
So fresh and flaky.
It almost melted in your mouth.

I'm not a big fan of hard boiled eggs though.

Not a requirement.
You can stay.

Your accent marks did come through. Do you speak French too?

Ah good.
And... oui.
(Although it's rusty.)

Amazing. That is very cool. You could photoshop the Hunchback in those pictures.

Funny, I never thought of that.
I've been to the real one in Paris (twice!)
so maybe that's why not.

Yum! My dream come true. How could you leave without buying some of those chocolate treats. Strong will power.

I had to avert my eyes.

Ughhhhhh! A spoonful of pasta for dinner. My Italian mother would NOT approve.

 Normally, neither would I.
But neither one of us was all that hungry.
A small bite was just about right.

Bless her heart, she is a doll. I can tell she has you wrapped around her little paw doesn't she?

Oh, brother.

Yes.

Puppy Love!!!

:goodvibes

:cheer2: Extra cheers because I was first to comment. I'm soooo proud!

 Yay, you!

Thanks! I've never been to Montreal. I don't normally like shopping but a lot of those little shops looked really interesting.

I don't normally like shopping either.
But, yes. There were a few places
I popped into.

But not too many.

"Unique clothes!" - Pass.
"Unique shoes!" - Pass
"Unique lingerie!" - Pa... well, I'll look in the window a bit.
"Unique glass art! - Hello!

So is the Canadian equivalent of a skelp round the lugs?

 Yes!

Hmmm....
According to my unofficial survey.

No.

Only 97.84%.

Wait... What does that leave?

and when we went to Western Canada I had great difficulty getting egg free breakfasts.

I'm not overly surprised by that.

Even when I finally ordered a breakfast item at Subway that didn't mention eggs they sneaked an egg in anyway.

I love a good juxtaposition!

Well, really. Who doesn't???

I can share in this food love. Gelato is so good! What flavour did you get?

::yes:: I didn't write it in, since I couldn't remember.
(No notes. Perhaps I mentioned that?)

But knowing myself,
I probably chose lemon.

:lmao:

"Oh, wonderful! Please charge it to my account.
Suite #1, Buckingham Palace."

Aww - too cute! Good to see her looking so happy!

Crap. Well, that just sucks.

Yes, the duck risotto looked like regurgitated stomach contents, but I trust you that it was amazing.

When the waiter put it down,
I remember thinking:
"Oh, no. What did I do?"

Quite possibly overly so and too much of a good thing.

::yes:: I don't think I could have eaten
a large plate of it.
Super rich.
But... sooooo good.

A photo talk can be quite cathartic, as can gelato. Glad you had a nice time by yourself indulging us with your photographic prowess.

You're being too kind.
Even I knew the photos weren't that great.
But that's okay.
They were just quick snaps with the iPod.

But you have a good eye for subject. A little post processing and cropping could probably make them pretty darn good.

But you have a good eye for subject. A little post processing and cropping could probably make them pretty darn good.

Hmmmm... maybe. But I've got my hands full right now.
I've done quite a few shoots over the past few months
and several photos to get to.
But first.... gotta wait for the new laptop to arrive,
then put photoshop on it,
then upload the photos
(sitting on a portable drive right now.)

But I'm still going to yak on and on.

:lmao:

I really don't gloat in front of her.
I don't rub it in.
Really I don't.

Oh, wait.
Yes I do.

And it's so much fun!!

I don't know how she puts up with you.

She has yet to hit me upside the head
when I do this.

I'm guessing you must have other redeeming qualities that can't be mentioned on the DIS. :rotfl: That's the only other explanation.

I had put Google to work the previous night
and found what looked like a good place
to go to for breakfast.
And I was dying for some eggs Benedict.

So I'm wondering why you didn't put Google to work a little bit harder and check their menu as well.... :rolleyes1

"The" and then "Mon" like in "Jamaica, Mon!"
and then "Café" like 'kaff-ay'.

More on that in a bit.

That's what I would have thought!

Wait.
Hang on....

Oh.
That's from the movie Speed.
With Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
Good movie.

This is what happens when I don't take notes.
Some of the details get mixed up a bit.
Now that I think about it...
nothing eventful happened at all.

Sounds like you're having another case of the Walter Mittys....

It's Thé Mon café.
That translates to "Tea, my café"
or better still, "My tea café"

Run Away!

And why shouldn't you trust me?
Have I ever lied to you?

Well.....there was that one time....and then there was.....

Yes!

They didn't serve eggs Benedict.
But... but... but... I was craving that!

poop.

I told you to run away!

But once I got it...

It was really good!

I would not have been happy.

I didn't know the eggs were hard boiled.
I thought they were going to scramble them
or possibly make an omelet.

I don't like hard cooked yolks, they need to be loosely scrambled, poached or over easy. I would have been picking the yolks off that sandwich.

I'm sorry, but that just rankles.
You have to pay to go into a church?
That just smacks of money gouging to me.
What if you just want to go in and pray?

Sorry, the DIS doesn't allow politics or religion
so I'll just stop there.

Since I was raised without religion I can't make much judgement, but I'm always intrigued when people seem to get heated over these sorts of issues.

(Hello! We registered that your eyes
have looked at our church.
Your account has been deducted.
Have a nice day!)

I would say 2001, but that has long passed, Logan's Run? What other futuristic movies have I not seen?

This ornate gate caught my eye.
I just like it.

You don't see wrought Iron work like that any more today. There was a lot in New Orleans too.

Finally arriving at Notre Dame.

It looks just like it's counterpart in Paris.

I wonder if the columns are supposed to
represent bars in a jail cell...

:lmao:

Notice the checkered flags?
The previous weekend was the
Canadian Formula One Grand Prix.
I suspect this place was probably pretty packed, then.

They run a race on cobblestones? :confused3

Well this is embarrassing.
That's from The Blues Brothers.

First one that I actually recognized while you were telling it!

Back to the present time.
Well... the present time
at that time.
(And ladies and gentlemen,
thank you for flying Backtrack Air!
Your source for all things gone by.)

Is that a division of Pkondz Air?

I took my purchases outside
and sat and watched the world go by.

Now that's vacationing!

What flavor did you get?

I had looked up Boris Bistro in the CAA
(AAA in the US)
handbook and it had good reviews.

We walked up to the host and hostess and asked for a table.
Now I wasn't sure if we could get in or not,
as the review had said that reservations were required.

You didn't call beforehand and try to get a reservation while you were on your way? :confused3

It's a neat place.
The building is just a shell.
There's no roof.

Probably not a good choice for Al Fresco dining in February.

One thing caught my eye immediately.
"French Fries cooked in duck fat."
Wow. Sounds totally decadent.
I ordered that as an appetizer

I've had a "chicken nugget" cooked in duck fat, it was crazy good!

We wanted to see if we could go an entire year
without eating fries.

And while it wasn't easy... or all that fun...
We did it.

Wow! I don't think we'd make it a week!

Our "French fries" arrived.

Looks good!

Crap! I'm eating chips!!
Oh, well... I'm on vacation.
New rule. It's allowed once on a vacation.

:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Looks kind of... horrible, doesn't it?
Yeah. It does.
But Oh. My. God.
Soooooo good.
Easily the best thing I've eaten this year.

So what was the "black thing" across the top? Other than that it looks pretty good.

I went into the train station and...
You know when you go to McDonalds,
and they have "apple pie"?

Unless it's deep fried!

A few minutes later,
I was passing a Second Cup coffee shop...
I glanced through the window...
Cheesecakes! They have cheesecake!

Never heard of it, must be Canadian.

We settled in with our treats.
And that's pretty much how
our last full day in Montreal ended.

Sounds like a nice end to the trip

For those of you not on FB
I'm including this updated pic of Luna,
just so you can see that even
with a busted leg, she's still smiling.
And for those who are on FB,
I'm including this updated pic of Luna,
just so you can see that even
with a busted leg, she's still smiling,
since I didn't post it on FB.

This one got me. I had to read it three or four times. I was like, "I didn't see this picture on FB"? :confused3

:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

I don't know how she puts up with you.

Actually, neither do I!

I'm guessing you must have other redeeming qualities that can't be mentioned on the DIS.

Nope. 'Fraid not.

That's the only other explanation.

Or I'm just really good at avoiding being hit.
I'm old, but I'm quick.

Wait... you said we can't mention that on the DIS.

So I'm wondering why you didn't put Google to work a little bit harder and check their menu as well.... :rolleyes1

I have no idea.
I was sure I had,
and had seen Bennies...

:confused3

That's what I would have thought!

So it wasn't just me, then!

Sounds like you're having another case of the Walter Mittys....

Love that movie!
I've seen it at least 3 times.

Run Away!

Nah... it was good.

Well.....there was that one time....and then there was.....

Yes!

Okay... but other than those two times...

I told you to run away!

I don't know why I didn't listen to you.

I would not have been happy.

Well... I wasn't either...
But I decided that since I was already there...

I don't like hard cooked yolks, they need to be loosely scrambled, poached or over easy. I would have been picking the yolks off that sandwich.

You're the second person to say something similar.
But since I'm okay with it... it was all good.

Since I was raised without religion I can't make much judgement, but I'm always intrigued when people seem to get heated over these sorts of issues.

I just think a church shouldn't have an entrance fee.
To me, it smacks of hypocrisy.

I would say 2001, but that has long passed, Logan's Run? What other futuristic movies have I not seen?

I really liked Logan's Run.
Not many people know Farrah Fawcett was in it.

You don't see wrought Iron work like that any more today. There was a lot in New Orleans too.

::yes::

It looks just like it's counterpart in Paris

Smaller, though, I think.

They run a race on cobblestones? :confused3

No. The race is on a real track.
But I would think the touristy part of Montreal
would be pretty busy with thousands of visitors.

First one that I actually recognized while you were telling it!

Good! That's the game.

Is that a division of Pkondz Air?

Partner airline.

What flavor did you get?

Again, you're the second person to ask that.
And I don't remember.
But I would think it would've been lemon.

You didn't call beforehand and try to get a reservation while you were on your way? :confused3

Nope.
Didn't even know if we'd eat there or not
until we got closer.
I figured we'd have tons of places to choose from
so why not just play it by ear.

Probably not a good choice for Al Fresco dining in February.

 No. I would think not.

I've had a "chicken nugget" cooked in duck fat, it was crazy good!

Oh, really. Interesting.

Wow! I don't think we'd make it a week!

It wasn't easy. But we did it.
Then we celebrated by getting poutine!

Looks good!

It was!

So what was the "black thing" across the top? Other than that it looks pretty good.

Mushroom.

Unless it's deep fried!

Still.... McDonalds.

Never heard of it, must be Canadian.

It is.
There used to be more,
but Tim Hortons is taking over.

Sounds like a nice end to the trip

::yes::

This one got me. I had to read it three or four times. I was like, "I didn't see this picture on FB"? :confused3

:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

 Good! That was the intent!

Nice update, I love that area you saw, just the type of place I like with cute little shops and restaurants. Beautlful old buildings

IMG_1425_zpslpk75bob.jpg

I was definitely expecting a fried or scrambled egg, or even like an egg "Patty" for this, from the description too, especially for breakfast. Does look good though, I am a big fan of hard boiled eggs.

Nice seating area in this Square/Park, looks like a nice place to rest and people watch.

I agree, I definitely would have expected what was in this building to be a lot more fun.

So glad Luna is doing better, she is a cutie!!

That does look like some great vacationing!

One thing caught my eye immediately.
"French Fries cooked in duck fat."
Wow. Sounds totally decadent.

tumblr_mp46mf7K1T1rmho65o1_250.gif

This past January, we decided that we'd go a year
without chips.
Potato chips to be precise.
(So popcorn chips or corn chips were okay.)

I'm doing the same thing - if I don't eat them at all I'm fine but if I allow myself one I end up eating the whole bag (and maybe another bag...)

4719273+_d57bd7c190908ea1d3ee2cf7ccbb91c9.gif

Is that spoon ginormous or is the portion really that tiny?

And just before I sign off on this chapter,
a little update on Luna.
Her stitches came out last Monday
and we were finally able to
(temporarily)
put the cone of shame away.
She's much happier without it.
The vet-tech we saw said the wound looked good.
We go for x-rays on Tuesday to see
how she's healing.

For those of you not on FB
I'm including this updated pic of Luna,
just so you can see that even
with a busted leg, she's still smiling.
And for those who are on FB,

Thanks for regaling us with your tale of the Pkondz's excellent adventure!
Those old buildings gave you lots of photo material. Looks like you scored a good place to have dinner! Was it a vegetarian place? I don't think I saw meat in your entrees.

I've got a plethora of pictures for you.
And all (or almost all) are touristy types.

Yay! :cool1:

I on the other hand,
can sleep all day, if I chose
(or if I could,)
wear whatever the heck I want
(but never, never, ever... sandals and socks)

Well, thank goodness for that :P

I had put Google to work the previous night
and found what looked like a good place
to go to for breakfast.

We are great at breakfast restaurants. We have a looot of those. Which pains Amber cause she doesn't like breakfast food (cray cray I know). She says we severely lack in diners thought - she'd be all for eating burgers and spaghetti for breakfast.

I think the town I grew up in has one of the highest ratio of breakfast restaurant per number of citizens XD Within walking distance of my house (like, easy walking, 10-15 minutes) there's something like six? And my parents' don't live in town center area, they live in a residential area. If you get in your car after that, for a 10 minutes drive, you can easily add 12+ more. And that's not counting Tim Hortons.

And yet they all have a 20 minutes wait on Mother's Day.

Oh.
That's from the movie Speed.
With Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
Good movie.

Well, at least you're not going on a boat, so we don't have to expect Speed 2 re-enactments.

It's Thé Mon café.
That translates to "Tea, my café"
or better still, "My tea café"

Fun fact, it's also a play on word. 'Thé' is pronounced the same as 'T'es', which is the shortened form of 'Tu es'.

So when you're speaking the name out, it would also sound like you're saying 'You're my Cafe'

They didn't serve eggs Benedict.
But... but... but... I was craving that!

Have you ever heard of looking up menus before picking a place to eat at? :rotfl2:

Granted, that's the picky girl in me. I like knowing what I'm in for. I would have sent you over to Ben & Florentine. I think there's one a couple of blocks from Stanley street, and eggs Benedict are one of their specialties. Next time you'll know :P

I've been inside before,
and now, there's an entrance fee.

I'm sorry, but that just rankles.
You have to pay to go into a church?
That just smacks of money gouging to me.
What if you just want to go in and pray?

That's like me in London, when we went to see Westminster Abbey.

Equivalent entrance fee of CAD$30.00

It was really gorgeous from the outside.

And as befits a major tourist attraction,
you have the overly expensive horse drawn wagons.

They tried to outlaw those this summer, cause the treatment of the horses isn't stellar. But the mayor went about it the wrong way so the carriage drivers took it to court and won. They'll have to do a study before they can really do anything.

These are from a Christmas store.

I was so excited when I found out they had a year round Christmas store in Montreal. Unfortunately, it's not quite as awesome looking at it is at Disney.

Notice the checkered flags?
The previous weekend was the
Canadian Formula One Grand Prix.
I suspect this place was probably pretty packed, then.

::yes::

Sucre a la Crème is a Quebec and French Canadian delicacy.
It's made by mixing brown sugar, maple syrup,
butter, and cream together
and cooking it into a fudge like consistency.

Soooooo good. The best kind is the chewy, gooey kind. My godmom's mother used to make the best (and the best fudge for that matter).

And I found it right away.
In a corner store.
And it just didn't feel right.

The consistency can really vary depending on the recipe. My Aunt makes some, but hers is rather dry and crumbly. Plus she puts nuts in it and that's a big no go for me.

In the back of the store was something
that I loved.
Gelato.
No way I'm passing that up!

I'm gonna have to take down the name of that place and go there. Looks so good.

And really narrow.
You could just imagine living
in a time before automobiles
were invented.

IMG_1467_zpsst7085qy.jpg

You can also imagine why the paving in the middle is different (and was probably done at a later time..) than the paving on the sides. Poop trails anyone?

So much so, that she said she'd like to see
Old Montreal too.

Isn't that always the way. At least it's a pretty nice place to revisit over and over :P

Ruby is not a fancy diner.
And this place was pretty fancy.

Well, looks like I have one thing in common with your non Disney loving wife :P

Crap! I'm eating chips!!
Oh, well... I'm on vacation.
New rule. It's allowed once on a vacation.

:thumbsup2

Except the restaurant was a St. Hubert
(Think KFC)

Must have been a St. Hubert Express cause it's not usually fastfood. It's a sit down restaurant. Not super fancy, your utensils are wrapped in a napkin and your placemat is paper, but still. I love that place, they have pretty good food.

Her stitches came out last Monday
and we were finally able to
(temporarily)
put the cone of shame away.

Yaaaaay :cheer2:

That's always the best part. No longer having to worry about them ripping them out. No more sad, pitiful eyes "Why are you doing this to me, large non furry thing that I've come to love? I thought we were friends"

Hmmm....
According to my unofficial survey.

No.

Only 97.84%.

Well that explains it - sometimes it looked like a really extensive menu but the difference mainly was in just how many eggs it contained.

Wait... What does that leave?
I'm happy with eggs in cakes! I just don't like them smelling or tasting like egg!

::yes:: I didn't write it in, since I couldn't remember.
(No notes. Perhaps I mentioned that?)

But knowing myself,
I probably chose lemon.
Let's go with that - great choice!

So......

I fly out on September 14th, arriving that afternoon.
Spend a few days in Disney.
Fly home on the 18th.
It's all booked.

Which means...
So, @TheLittleKatie, @BibbitybobityLu and @PrincessCaitlin....
still wanna meet up?

I've just seen this and briefly read around the subject! and YES!!! I'm so excited!!!!!!!! I'll be back to comment properly I promise, but this just made me too happy to ignore :cool1::banana::cheer2:

Nice update, I love that area you saw, just the type of place I like with cute little shops and restaurants. Beautlful old buildings

::yes:: I really didn't mind walking through it a second time.

I was definitely expecting a fried or scrambled egg, or even like an egg "Patty" for this, from the description too, especially for breakfast. Does look good though, I am a big fan of hard boiled eggs.

Ah! Your the first person who likes hard boiled eggs.
(Other than me.)

It really was good.
That croissant was amazing.

Nice seating area in this Square/Park, looks like a nice place to rest and people watch.

No shade there though,
so I don't know how long I would've sat there.

But it was a nice place to be.

I agree, I definitely would have expected what was in this building to be a lot more fun.

Total waste of time.
I almost felt like telling them
to take down their window display.

So glad Luna is doing better, she is a cutie!!

:goodvibes

That does look like some great vacationing!

It was a nice little spot with a nice little treat.

I'm doing the same thing - if I don't eat them at all I'm fine but if I allow myself one I end up eating the whole bag (and maybe another bag...)

<sigh> Yeah.... I do the same.
Rotten addictive spuds!

Is that spoon ginormous or is the portion really that tiny?

Both.
Large spoon + small portion.
But it was enough for her.
