The Running Thread - 2016

This forum, strava, and Garmin Connect are the only places I post. I do read a few other places including letsrun.com.

Once in a great while, if I'm feeling particularly masochistic around a large event like the Olympic Trials, I'll go read the LetsRun.com forums. :)

This x1000. If this board is seen as welcoming and all inclusive (which it is), then that board is the polar opposite. They can be SO vicious on there. I've gotten the feeling that unless you run in the 2:45 or less range for a marathon, then you're just wasting their time. I much prefer this board. However, their inactive thread (here) is one of the GREATEST running resources I have EVER found. So many extremely intelligent coaches and runners posted way back when in lets run's heyday. You have a question it's probably been answered there.

ATTQOTD: Other than the Disboards I am not on social media. I know I am weird, people look at me like I have 2 heads when I tell them that. But I am on the Disboards community on Strava.

@LSUlakes can you add some races for me when you get a chance Thanks!

I have no social media presence - no facebook accounts or the like. I have a twitter account, but only to follow Alabama football - I do not tweet.

As for forums, I post on this board, an Alabama board and an Ohio State board. I read a few other running boards when trying to overcome a hurdle, but I no longer post on them. I posted on one when I was more competitive.

ATTQOTD: I have a Facebook account and am part of a couple groups there that chat about running, and the running club has a big active group on there as well. We plan most of our weekend runs through events or other posts. Occasionally I will look at some other running forums, like letsrun or runningahead. I have a twitter account and an instagram account that remains pretty dormant. I don't usually use any photo sharing apps since I feel like most people don't care about things I take pics of.

I'm a serious lurker/researcher who was never a runner. In fact I failed 9th grade gym one 9 weeks for my inability to run a mile. During my chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2001, I dreamed of running. I had recurring, beautiful dreams where I was effortlessly running through the woods, parks, EPCOT, etc. I've kept this 'head running' to myself until January when we were in WDW during the Marathon. We got up and watched much of the race, and I was struck that these were regular people, not super athletes, going by me. Chatting with a wonderful woman in MK who had trained and run the Half with her mom, she said 'You could totally do it.' So I looked into the rD site, saw the Jeff Galloway plan, and thought 'Wow, I feel like maybe I can actually do this.' I was unaware that running meant a gradual learning to run; I thought everyone knew how to run and just did it! I started running in February, signed my husband and me up for the W&D Challenge, and have been working hard to prepare. I've lost 30 lbs and last weekend ran 10 miles at a 12 min pace! I'll never be a fast runner but already I feel such a reward from putting in the effort!

ATTQOTD: Dis Forums, FB, Strava. LOVE the camaraderie and knowledge on this board. It really helps to keep me motivated!

ATTQOTD: Mostly frequent just the Dis boards and have trouble keeping up with the threads sometimes, but I really do appreciate all of the sharing on this board!! I also listen to lots of podcasts during my long commute to work including Mickey Miles and More and the Let's Run Disney Podcast, and sometimes visit their Facebook pages. I also like when some advice from Jeff Galloway's blog pops up on my Facebook feed. Mom and I met him in January at the expo for marathon weekend, and he is such a lovely, motivational person.

What an awesome story- thanks for sharing!!

ATTQOTD: I definitely get most of my running info here. I do follow lots of runners on instagram which motivates me, but I mostly post daily life pictures. I follow a Sparkle Skirts group on Facebook. I also really enjoy the Dis group of people on Strava. Twitter is the only place where I let my political side out, because I have such a small circle of followers there I'm not worried about getting in political arguments in real life haha

QOTD: To build off of yesterdays QOTD, what other forms of social media (Forums, Facebook, twitter, ect) do you use to read and discuss running related topics?
Well I follow and am part of several RunDisney Facebook groups. I also follow a few running related things on Twitter. I'm not part of any other forums that discuss running.

ATTQOTD: This is the only forum I actually post. My twitter feed (which I've never actually tweeted) is a combination of running info and Disney info. The Runner's World message board is a good resource but like Letsrun.com it can get a bit harsh. The Runner's World message board does have some good sub-forums if you are looking for info on destination type runs. Occasionally RunDisney events will be discussed, but its nowhere as in depth as what you can get here.

ATTQOTD: This is really the only board that I read for running. I do join the facebook groups for whatever runs I am participating in, but never post. I follow some instagram running people or races. Let'srun message board turned my stomach with the way they talked about women and I quickly decided never to read it again.

That's adorable. My son likes to tell everyone here in VA that their team is terrible. He doesn't get the concept of divisions at 4.5 yet, so he thinks all schools are competition. I'm also complete jealous that you took her to the Chimes. Please tell me you got crab fingers and/or boudin balls.

That's funny about the divisions. I had some raw oysters and a boudin omelet, DD had red beans and rice. The blackened gator is solid as well, but opted for the oysters instead this time.

@LSUlakes I have a race tomorrow! DH and I signed up for a night time 5k. He admittedly only agreed to sign up so he didn't have to get up early tomorrow to go out on my training run with me as I will use this race instead! :)

30 - Dis5150 Dam Night Run N/G

Race distance?

ATTQOTD: Our local Galloway running group has a group page on Facebook and that's about it other than here for online discussions of running.

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

ATTQOTD: I first found this site when I was researching the WDW marathon about a year ago I guess. I was pleased to find a thread for the marathon itself had already started and began following it while trying to learn as much about this race as I could. So I discovered this site and this branch of the site at the same time. I do read a lot of other things on here now that I have found them. When the marathon was over, I wanted to continue discussing running with the people who posted in the marathon thread and decided to make a general running discussion thread. I couldn't be happier with the amount of people who also take part in this thread.

I went back to Disney as an adult in 2008. That's when I found the Disboards. I was googling and reading up on WDW, and found this site. I joined a couple of years ago but didn't post much, only read. I've been off and on UNTIL I started following @Ariel484 a couple of years ago... her trip reports got me hooked. The shopping, the cute dog, the running, the outfits, the DISNEY! @Dis5150 you know what I'm talking about, apparently. It took so much nerve to finally post. But after reading her trip reports, I was inspired to do more Disney races! I wanted her to keep journaling, so I finally posted "I'm reading your TR's and they are very entertaining". Lurkdom is weird, ain't it?

The running thread just popped up somehow a few months ago... I follow threads off of other threads, so I'm pretty sure that I found it following rabbit trails on a Friday night. So much fun!

QOTD: To build off of yesterdays QOTD, what other forms of social media (Forums, Facebook, twitter, ect) do you use to read and discuss running related topics?

ATTQOTD: On facebook there is a group called the 100 mile a month. It's a good way to post your daily and monthly totals to try to get to 100 miles each month. I find it is just another form of motivation to see others reaching that mark. At times getting to 100 miles is a struggle, while at others I reach that mark nearly two weeks into a month. I also read runners world forums at times. Used to spend a lot of time on the Boston Marathon forum when I was training for that event, but mostly a lurker there these days. The last thing I use of Garmin Connect, which mostly consist of a group of my piers who are much faster than I am. Seeing the things they do to get the results they achieve reminds me I can always do more.

Happy Friday to all and good luck to those who are racing this weekend!

I belong to a local running group, and FB is where we post our run schedules and social events. There's a couple of podcasts and Disney running groups that I follow on FB, but I'm not very active there. I keep Twitter tuned to runner products, certain positive runner people that I like (among other interests). My Pinterest feed also has some running related info in it as well. I think some of those feeds are good for finding new products and discounts. On Strava I belong to the Disboards group and Another Mother Runner. I had NEVER been as involved in any thread until I found this thread, though.
