Think I've Done Something Stupid

I've signed up for a Disney event and think there might be a problem but can't quite put my finger on it.

Maybe if I break it down into sections I can see if there is anything I should be worried about.

Right the title first work "Disney" ::MickeyMowell that's fantastic I love Disney how could anything be wrong (Feeling Confident that I worried over nothing.)

Second Word "Wine" - Wine we'll I do on occasion like one or two (bottles :drinking:)

(&)

Third word "Dine" - Well who doesn't like dinner and some great Disney dining.

Phew well that's a relief seem like all is okay.

What, there's a last part to this sentence, well it can't be that bad what is it "Half Marathon"

I'm sorry what.... come again "Half Marathon"

Ahh...

Oh Crap I'm screwed!!!

I am actually very excited but also super scared all at the same time, I've only ever done a 5k before and that was a few years ago. Now have to do 13.1 miles.

But I've got 7 months to train and I know it's going to be a great experience running around the parks taking in the sights.

But if anyone is about around the Epcot/Boardwalk area (on the 6th Nov) please come along a give me a wave (I'll post a pic of me in my running get up nearer to the race). I'll be near the back so don't worry if you turn up late.

You can TOTALLY do this! Just get started with some training, slowly but surely, and you'll be good!
Jeff Galloway will eventually post some training plans that can help you get ready, but the one for Wine and Dine doesn't start till about July since the race is so far away.
So! Since you sound worried, I would suggest starting to follow a training plan for the Disneyland 10k for now to get yourself moving. Here's the pdf: http://www.rundisney.com/media/rund.../2015/disneyland-half-marathon/DLHM15_10K.pdf
And it starts on May 12th. So you have time to just do any type of exercise during the month of April to get yourself moving.
If the 10k seems too easy... try the disneyland half one instead.
And then in July, when the Wine and Dine training plan starts, just switch over to that one and you're good to go!
You believed in yourself enough to pay all that money! You can believe in yourself through the training, too! I can't wait to hear about how it all goes!

Aw thanks @Lambiebell will definitely give some of those training plans a go. Just signed up for a park run this weekend to get me started.

Yeah I am excited about it, as I've been to Disney World a few times and wanted to try something new and this seems like a really fun event - Although that's looking at it from 7 months away, might seem less fun as the dates looms nearer lol

You can totally do it. I have been running just 5k for a year and over the last few weeks I started training for a half marathon. I am up to 8 miles now and have started to feel its totally achievable. Plus think of all the calories you will burn and all the food and wine you can consume lol.

My husband wants us to do the dopey challenge in January 2017  it will be easy for him but not for me.

All I keep thinking about is all the cocktails and dole whips I am going to have.

Would definitely recommend using the Jeff Galloway plan, thats what I'm using and it seems to work.

Good luck and have fun.

Sarah xx

Thanks @sjt22 and I hope you do get to do the Dopey Challenge.

Oh and will use your plan when I'm training I'll think about all the Disney yumminess I can treat myself with for being so good (Joe's Margaritas and Mickey Pretzel lol)

Long-time forum lurker, but your thread compelled me to register and post!

I was in the same boat 160 days ago when I signed up for the Star Wars Dark Side half. Only a couple 5ks, last in 2009, and I'm not in the best shape but I do keep active (I'm a rower). So, let me assure you couch to half is absolutely doable, and from my perspective, far easier than I ever expected. I used the Galloway beginner plan since I thought it was manageable and not terribly demanding for time. Now, 7 days out from the half, I'm trained up and actually expecting to beat my sister and brother-in-law, who are also running the race!

Enjoy the journey, and good luck.

Thanks @CDS Bump and the best of luck for the Star Wars Dark Side half, you'll have to report back and tell me how it went.

Yep already started training and have signed up for Park Runs, Now have two under my belt and am improving so waiting till the 6 month mark to start the plan but feeling more and more confident each day that I'll make it round in one piece lol :tiptoe:

@k8Davies come check out the "runDisney" forum and check out "The Running Thread". You can get a lot of good information about running in general as well as folks who have done the race you are signed up for that can give you some tips. With 7 months to go, you have plenty of time to prepare for the race. You have the next ~3 months to work on developing a solid base to prepare you for training for a half marathon. Then you will have ~4 months to train for the half itself. Good luck to you!

Hey! The race went really well. Met all of my goals and to be honest it wasn't that hard. I'd even say it was easy compared to some of the training runs. Stick to the training program and the real thing will be cake. Good luck!

How amazing! Good luck. Just train train train. You don't have to be like Mr Incredible but I'd definatley get a schedule together and stick to it. It's always good to have a plan.

A Huge, massive, enormous well done @CDS Bump that is amazing :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

So glad you had a great time and hit all your goals, that has given me a real boost so thanks. I'll keep going back to your post when the training start to bite :cool1:

A 5k run is only 3.1 miles so it should be straight forward to train for:thumbsup2

Sorry to bump an old post, but I'm curious to see how your training is going, k8Davies!

Also wondering. Hoping it's going better for the OP than it is for those training through the heat and humidity in Florida in the summer.:scared1: Man, it really sucks :scared:

Thanks for asking @LiquidSunshine Training is going good; although when the sun was out it went a bit slow - but now it's back to crappy raining and mild old English Summer the training is back on track.

I know I can get the distance, I'm just worried about the time limitation, as with getting the parks open they're very strict about do it by a certain time.

I feel so sorry for anyone training in the heat, as I tried to run over here when we had the hot days and it was a nightmare, and I've heard Florida's been super hot and Humid...

I would say I think people are getting in Early Morning or Late Evening Runs in...

When I signed up I though starting at 5.30am was a bit weird but as it will be cool, I'm starting to be happy about the early morning start :)

So glad it's all on track. The heat definitely affects your pace, but if you endured it for some training runs, it has similar benefits to training at altitude so if you just suck it up, you'll cruise once the cooler weather hits.

Don't worry about the course limits. They build in enough time to allow for walkers and if you start in a corral from midpack to the rear, you will probably have some places where you are almost forced to walk with the crowds, until they thin out a little bit. There's a lady who runs on the same trails I do and she runs all the Disney half marathons and loves then. She runs a 12 minute mile and takes regular walk breaks, stops for photos and for her it's one big party. She's never mentioned anything about not getting to the finish line before the course is closed. What is the time limit? I'm guessing at least three hours? If you finished in three hours, that would give you a very easy 13:44/mile pace and I'm pretty sure you won't have a problem with that :)

No evening runs for me! It's still too hot. I shoot to be out of the house by 5.45 am which is the coolest part of the day. Apparently I'm not that smart and did a Half Marathon in June. It was brutally hot and humid! You will not have that problem in November. It's much cooler and the humidity is very low. Your other advantage is that it's a really flat course and I'm sure you're training on more hills where you are right now so that will be to your advantage, too. Keep going. You'll probably find this is the first of many races for you :D

Aw thanks @2Tiggies you post had made me feel loads better.

I've still got 3 months, so got a lot more training opportunities. As I definitely need to build in time for photos, as how often do you get to go round the parks before opening (Exciting)
