avengers assemble:
3adults, late sept/beg oct
As it would be an extra last minute trip-sadly finances & obviously availability would dictate choices.

Where would you choose & why?

I wouldn't say this is last minute since we booked our trip for late august a week or two ago (talk about procrastination!).
But i don't think it matters since disney has its own transportation system.
I would do a deluxe or a moderate resort.

If you are for convenience i'd book a resort in the Epcot or Magic Kingdom area.

OKW has very big rooms and are not bad on price.
SSR is the same price of OKW which is a bit smaller.

I would also look into POFQ and POR. They are very nice moderate resorts.

If I could choose any resort I would go to BC or YC, the pool is fantastic and you can take a walk to Epcot and a short bus ride to HS.

Honestly, wherever your budget would allow on property.

Disney transportation is generally pretty good. The pricier options often have a choice of transport, versus bus only. But resorts are also heavily booked for your dates as well, so budget and availability will be a big determinant.

EDIT: adding POP Century Resort

In other words: no Coronado, no Caribbean Beach (!), no Poly, no Contemporary, no BC/YC.

CBR is wacky to be gone.

It depends on OP's exact dates. Disney will show no availability for Fri, Sat, Sun..BUT add Thursday and suddenly a resort becomes available

You can stay anywhere on property and be fine. Several times we have driven down, parked the car, and not gotten back in it until we left. You can do this at any resort.

My biggest advice would be to book restaurants at/near the parks where you will be or at your own resort. Getting from resort to resort can be challenging, but it is possible with time.

If going to Disney Springs is important to you, I would suggest a Port Orleans resort for easy transportation to DS. I have often heard people say that getting to Disney Springs from the resorts is more painful than getting to the parks, but I have no personal experience with that. We have only gone to DS when we had a car or used the boats from POR or POFQ.

I have never had an issue with transportation at any level of resort, so I would truly book based on your finances. Personally, I prefer values just because I'm only sleeping and showering there and I'm not fancy. And with values, that allows me to save more money to go again sooner.

But as you said it's 3 adults (unsure of what relationships in that combo) values only have 2 beds unless you get a suite at ASMu or AOA so there would have to be bed sharing. This isn't something that bothers me either, but I know some people are very picky that way.

I never have a car at Wdw. We prefer to have Disney do the driving.

I would also recommend an on site resort. I don't know your budget or the dynamics of the 3 adults going. Are 2 ok sleeping together?

My pics in various categories would be:
Value- Pop

Moderate- POR Riverside or French Quarter in that order

Deluxe- AKL or if you have a larger budget- YC

If on site is not in your budget, the hotels in the Disney Springs area are next best. Hotel Plaza Blvd. They have good bus service running every 30 min, but you'd have to book your own airport transportation.
We stayed once in the Doubletree with a great discount code from Mousesavers.com. They are all 1 bedroom suites so you'd have some privacy too. There's also a Holiday Inn for budget minded.
If you're interested in these hotels I'd recommend signing up for Mousesavers newsletter for their hot deals.

We always try to have a car, no matter where we are staying.

But without one, we just put on our "patient pants" and deal with whatever transportation throws our way.

So I wouldn't worry so much about transportation. You might have great experiences or you might have questionable ones. You might have both. Maybe budget just a bit extra for the occasional Uber, just in case, and have fun.

We have gone every year since 2010 and have never had a car. We take the magic express from the airport and use Disney transportation for the parks. Any place onsite is good for getting you around of course the deluxe resorts have the better transportation to and from the parks. Besides having buses they have boats and some have the monorail.

I wouldn't stay in a Value without a car, but we have little kids so taking multiple buses to get to and from dinner just takes too long when they're exhausted. We would never do a food court at dinner time, so the values don't work for us without a car. If you'll be eating QS for dinner or will still be in the parks most nights, you might not even notice. We stayed in POR last time, and didn't move out car once, so if they have availability and are in the budget they're a good option.

Depending on budget the PO resorts , OKW or Saratoga Springs are good because they all have boats to DS if that is in your evening plans. We have no issue using Disney to get to the parks. Last trip we used a taxi to get to and/or from a resort meal a few times. Still much cheaper than renting a car that stayed in the lot .

We've stayed at Pop six time and only rented a car once. The one time we had a car, we hardly used it.
We did use Uber to get to Animal Kingdom Lodge for a dinner and to get to the Orange County Convention Center for a conference. Uber worked well.

When we stay on site at Disney, I never ever have a car.

We've used Uber to get from Pop to AKL also! Just waited about 5 minutes or so. So I don't think a value resort is a bad choice without a car at all.

We had fine bus service as well.

We never use a car on WDW vacations. I think that he bus transportation is petty good overall, so I woudl suggest that you look at you budget and pick a resort that fits. It will be fine.

WE never have a car in WDW. The transportation is great, IMO, even the buses if you don't have small children in strollers.

Three adults on a budget.....I would try CSR, if available for your dates, and go with business class if the budget allowed. Nice central resort, good bus service, lots of dining choices, comfortable rooms, extra amenities, awesome pool and hot tub, BC rooms are in a great location, price is pretty good for what you get at CSR.

If CSR is not available, POR in a preferred location is also a good choice. Nice boat ride to DS and Yeehaa Bob for fun entertainment.

If the budget stretches to a deluxe, either AKL or WL (depending upon the construction situation) are reasonably priced options.

If a value is necessary, then POP would work. Standard rooms are fine here.

Enjoy!

If you can afford it, I would say Boardwalk for easy access to EPCOT World Showcase. Since your last minute, you may not be able to get a lot of ADRs, so access to a lot of great QS at EPCOT would be good IMO. But anywhere would be good if it means you can spend some time at Disney!
