The Running Thread - 2016

I would like to welcome all the new posters that have decided to start posting over the last few days. Anyone else out there, feel free to join in! If you would like to have your races added to the OP, just post the race info and when I "like" you post that will indicate that I am adding it to the list.

QOTD: I'm curious about how you base your training. Do train based on distance (ex. 5 miles @ "x" pace) or by time (ex. Run for 45 minutes @ "x" pace)? Why did you decided to go with the method you use?

ATTQOTD: I run by distance. The reason is, I always enjoyed the idea of having run "x" amount of miles compared to having run for "x" amount of time. Also, every training plan I have followed has been in miles.

Definitely distance. Much like the reason you gave for yourself.

It's a great lesson! I've heard so many people here and on Facebook say that they don't like Princess weekend because of the people, or they'll never run it again because of the people. I honestly just don't worry about what other people are doing as long as it doesn't affect me.
I think that this is true for most races, but rD races seem to be more of a social event than an actual race. Most people enter rD races for reasons other than those which inspire them to run in other races, and interaction with other participants and characters along the route is a huge part of the experience. I really don't want to think of a rD race as something that is "my race", even though I fully understand that the race is run inside my head more than on the course itself.

I wouldn't let those toxic voices ruin a race, but the comments after this year's race have convinced my wife and I to stick with marathon weekend.

I have a question for all the challenge veterans out there. With Dumbo coming up I am curious what you guys eat between races? Should I focus on carbs or protein or both to prepare for the next day?
Since none of those races is a full marathon, I would just eat normally. I only carb load for distances beyond 16 miles.

Hello!! This is my second time coming out of lurkdom, but I intend to not go back into lurkdom like I did last time!

I am not a fast runner nor do I run long distances, but overall I have been running on and off for the last 15 years now. I have taken part in a some local 5ks and training for my third 10k this spring I ended up with my first running injury: tendonitis due to my flat feet. After PT and getting inserts, the tendon is fine again and I have slowly started running again. Not too much as I am still waiting for the inserts for running, but I feel like at least I do belong among runners again!

My only race for the season will be my local 6k:
10/3 Nuremberg City Run 6k, goal: 40 minutes

Answer to the QOTD:
It varies. I usually try to go for a certain distance. But sometimes, especially if I don't feel like running I tell myself that I only need to run for 30 minutes. Once I have those 30 minutes, most of the time I will run a little longer so that it makes up 5km though... It is amazing how actually doing it can change my attitude towards the run so much!

I run mostly by distance...except sometimes it's by time. Especially for marathon training I like going say 3 hours and get in what I get in

That's so cool!!!!!

ATTQOTD: miles x pace. Question for those who do it by time, how do you gauge how to run if you don't do an out and back?
I just run for time looping around places and get in whatever miles in that time. Especially on long run when it's more about just getting time on my feet. I'm not one to stare and worry about pace all the time though, I just run by effort in that set amount of time.

Does anyone know the Host Resorts for the November Half Weekend ?
( We have reservations at Boardwalk.)
All resorts are hosts for Wine & Dine, join us on the wine & dine thread too like said above.

After the 10k for Dumbo last year we ate pasta for dinner at the pizza/place at DCA so I guess carb loaded. Can't remember lunch, but I know I made sure to eat protein pretty close after the 10k. Drank chocolate milk after the 10k too. I would say both making sure after the race you get your protein in and then carbs the rest of the day, but then I eat carbs before any race distance..I like carbs.

I agree with what @BuckeyeBama said. Don't overthink it too much. Maybe get some carbs/protein in the morning after the 10k. Just eat well Friday and Saturday and you should be fine.

Agree with others. If you intend to ingest ANY carbs during the half marathon (gels, powerade, etc.), then it is extremely unlikely that glycogen depletion will be a limiting factor. Even when running the half in 3.5 hours (not saying you will, but merely as an example), you're still unlikely to need a carb loading procedure of any kind (including the classic spaghetti dinner or something more sophisticated like the Western Australian method). However, if you're interested I can run the numbers for you to add a layer of confidence to your mind. Send me a PM because it would require a few personal details if you're interested (weight, VO2max, intended carb consumption during race and goal time). With that being said, I would say a normal breakfast, lunch and dinner would suffice to appropriately fuel you between runs. Avoid anything that you haven't eaten before (not a good time to try out squid if you've never had it before).

ATTQOTD: Most workouts are based on miles. Some workouts have been based on time, usually the Monday easy runs. The workouts based on miles, I will have a pace goal in mind before hitting the pavement.

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

ATTQOTD: I first found this site when I was researching the WDW marathon about a year ago I guess. I was pleased to find a thread for the marathon itself had already started and began following it while trying to learn as much about this race as I could. So I discovered this site and this branch of the site at the same time. I do read a lot of other things on here now that I have found them. When the marathon was over, I wanted to continue discussing running with the people who posted in the marathon thread and decided to make a general running discussion thread. I couldn't be happier with the amount of people who also take part in this thread.

I am another lurker that has followed this thread from the beginning and decided to post. I have my first runDisney event with the Princess 5k and Half in 2017 (my friend didn't want to do the Glass Slipper challenge since this will be her first half). A Disney half has been on my bucket list for a while. Also on my bucket list is becoming a Half Fanatic member, which I will accomplish in December. I've done various 5k's, some 10k's (including the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta 3x) and the Hot Chocolate 15k, and 2 half marathons. I have loved reading about all the races/training on this thread so decided to join in the fun.

QOTD: My worst race was probably the first Peachtree (10k) that I did. Thought I could go out and just run/walk it with no training. Found out the hard way when I couldn't move for the rest of the day and part of the next. My next 10k went much better!
QOTD: I train by mileage, with some tempo runs (time) built in. This is the first time adding speed work into my training.

Upcoming races:

Chicago Half 9/26/16 - My goal is to PR. My current PR is 2:45 on a hilly course here in Georgia (you can't run in Atlanta without hills, unless you are on a track). With the flat course, I should be able to PR
Lewis-Gale Salem Half, Salem VA 10/15/16 - No goal - this is just on the way to get the half fanatic status (3 halfs in 90 days) and my hometown so no housing costs!
Locomotive Half, Kennesaw GA 12/11/16 - this is the race where I hold my current PR. Just want to beat my 2:45 from last year

Also have a few 5k's planned just for fun - I like to plan a race for each month so I have something to shoot for and to keep my running consistent.
5k:
8/6/16 Vinings 5k
10/8/16 Bacon 5k - doing this one walking with my youngest son - because who doesn't love Bacon!
12/3/16 Ugly Sweater 5k (morning) and Lights of Life (evening) - the Lights of Life was added because it's a challenge with the Locomotive Half - extra medal - 'nough said.

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?
I started lurking the DIS maybe 3 or 4 years ago while planning Disney trips. I used the transportation board a lot to get good deals on car rentals. I also used the DVC section quite a bit when we were in the process of purchasing our contract. Once my wife and I started doing runDisney races I began stalking the WISH threads and eventually in my lead up to the 2015 Marathon Weekend I began posting on the running threads in WISH. I've posted a lot more in the last year and this thread specifically is a big reason why! Love the community we have here, so many awesome people involved!

ATTQOTD: First visited DISBoards many years ago when researching Disney World and the resorts. We usually go to Disney about once every 4 years. Took me a while to find the WISH section and the sub-section that was below it for RunDisney and the events. I knew several years ago (just after I started running) I wanted to do Marathon Weekend(and one of the challenges), and the thread for Marathon Weekend for 2016 was a wealth of information for me and others.

This thread is great, and I am glad to see we keep getting more lurkers to join in our discussions. The QOTD is also an excellent way to keep the thread moving, so thanks @LSUlakes for getting this thing rolling and growing!

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

Can't really remember when it first was, but sometime in 2013 when I first started training for my first Dopey. I read maybe 1-2 per month and mostly sought out posts from "coach" (I think it was "ce wait"). Always so informative and seemed so wise (I miss his posts). I increased my reading over time from 2013-2015. By fall of 2015, I was reading at least once per week. Then I decided to come out of lurkdom and made my first post in October 2015 when I felt I had something to contribute. Now, I'm a daily contributor and even have my own training journal.

ATTQOTD: I’m pretty sure I found it when I googled “Disney World Marathon Corrals”. I had signed up for the 2014 Marathon with no POT because I had not done a race in probably 10 years, so I was curious/concerned about which corral I’d be in. Like most, I lurked for a while because most posters really knew there stuff and admittedly I felt a bit intimidated. I think there was poster by the name of @cewait who was a cornucopia (yes I said cornucopia) of knowledge. Anyway, I’ve hung around and really appreciate all the info, knowledge and work all of you put into this section. Thanks!

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

Similar to you I found the DIS boards and the runDisney board at the same time. Last November or so I started researching Marathon Weekend and the Dopey Challenge with plans to run in 2017. During that research I stumbled over here. I participated a little in the 2016 Marathon Weekend board, but not much as I wasn't participating. I have been apart of the Running Thread since it's inception, and also started the 2017 Dopey Thread. I'm very appreciative of the effort you put in @LSUlakes and all the insight that I've gained on this board. This is definitely a very supportive community and educational for runners both new and experienced.

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?

Well, it looks like I signed up and posted for the first time in February 2014. I was probably an infrequent lurker for a few months before then. I know that I stumbled across the DIS boards while trying to find pictures of the medals for 2014 WDW Marathon Weekend sometime during the previous summer (I was probably a little too excited to try and find pictures of the first Dopey Medal). I think I clicked a link directly to a thread in the rD section of WISH and kind of worked backward toward finding the larger community. While I don't really frequent many other DIS boards that often, as WDW Marathon Weekend tends to be my only trip to Disney each year, I have lurked in a few other threads when finding info on resorts, restaurants, etc. I check the rD forum and The Running Thread pretty much daily and migrated to The Running Thread early since it was basically a continuation of the Marathon Weekend 2016 thread. Really appreciate this community and all of the support and advice it provides.

Which race was this? I've been eyeing a couple of the wine runs and just want to make sure I know what I'm getting in to.
It was part of the local 'Run the Vineyard' race series we have in the tri-state area surrounding Philadelphia. The group that holds them does something different at each vineyard including trail runs (entirely through the vineyards) and road races (sometimes with a little bit of vineyard running at the end) that start and end at the winery. They even have obstacle races (I haven't done one of theirs yet) and races that are somewhere in-between that are on the worn down dirt roads that they drive the cars through the vineyards on. I imagine every wine run is different but my recommendation is that if it's entirely vineyard/trail running then either train on similar terrain or go in the spring where you'll still run the risk of uneven surfaces but there won't be the dead vines from pruning (honestly that was the first time I had the dead vines though) if it's a road race that just starts/ends at a vineyard or winery treat it like any other race.

QOTD: What brought you to the DIS boards for the first time? When did you first discover the "runDisney" (Was named something else a few months ago) section of the forum and The Running Thread?
I found the site when I saw something about Fish Extenders when I was planning a Disney cruise after many years of hiatus from cruising. Soon after that cruise I began training for GSC as a total running newbie and looked to see if there was anything about runDisney on here. There was and the rest is history.

ATTQOTD: I have been on the DIS boards since planning my first trip as an adult in 2001 (joined in Feb for trip planning a Nov 2001 trip). Holy crap, that was 15 years ago now! I had long stretches where I didn't visit the forums because I wasn't planning any trips. I did know about the other forum when it was buried elsewhere, although most of that time I wasn't running again, so I didn't really pay any attention to it. I came back to DIS regularly in summer 2014 because at the time I was planning a Dec 2014 trip for me and the SO and shortly after I started planning that trip in July, some online friends and I decided to do Tink 2015 and the registration for that was a couple weeks after I started planning that trip. I have been visiting regularly since then, in the Tink 2015 and W&D 2015 threads, and then a little while after W&D found this thread. :)

ATTQOTD: I came across the Disboards because I was chosen to move on to round two of the 2016 Disney Parks Moms Panel search (They answer planning questions for Disney). I googled it to see if I could find others in round two and the Dis Boards popped up. After being on the boards for a little while I decided to search runDisney to see if I could find others that were running and lo and behold there was a thread for every race weekend. So I decided to lurk on the Marathon 2016 thread because I was curious to hear about running a marathon and saw that there was a running thread being started.
