When I get to the US this summer will I need to have a DVLA code in order to rent a car? I have a photo licence and didmnt need one last year but I wondered if things had changed. I've hired with Alamo
Sorry but you are wrong- no one ever asks to see it.Yes, you will need a code - but they are super easy to get. We've just printed ours off for our August trip. It is valid for 21 days (as in, make sure you access it up to 21 days before you pick up the car). The website is....
gov. uk/ view- driving- licence
(but without the gaps!) and best of all? It's free haha!

No need to apologise. Technically you were correct. To enable a rental company to see driving convictions the DVLA in the name of data protection madness decided you can now access this by knowing your NI number (I haven't a clue) and going through this process to get the details. Everyone quickly realised it was unworkable at a car hire desk so I've never been asked- in USA, all over Europe and UK. Like you say it won't harm to take it but you won't be asked. In which case, I apologise. I was under the impression that it was replacing the paper counterpart. This will be my first trip abroad in 3 years, so I'm a little rusty lol.
I guess it doesn't hurt though? X
