Question Re: Dining Plan

This TIW conversation will become more interesting when the price is increased again this fall (or sooner). The last was a 50% increase from $100 to $150 last year in October (I think). If they do that again ewe would be looking at $225, although I would suspect they may stop at $200. At that point, it will be difficult to make it worth it for us once a year visitors, unless we are able to get two 10-12 day trips in on the same card, like with the AP. I may become more cognizant of the DVC and AP discounts soon.

Also remember the TIW gives a 20% discount to alcohol during meals also, sooooo if your group partaken during meals that could be a big savings. With the TIW cost jump, not sure my next trip will be TIW, might do DP!

But our math is still showing that with the $150 buy in the TIW and adding tax, it will actually cost more than it saves us. It's really close for us.

If it's that close, remember that while we tip on the undiscounted subtotal, the TAX is on the discounted amount. So you're paying a little bit less in tax than you would without the discount.

For me the TIW has a lot of increased value because we love the food courts, and use the card at them. No other discounts there, and no tax charged, either!

IMO the tip doesn't matter other than possibly a small difference for buffets or if you have an issue at a restaurant, the 18% is about the minimum one should do at TS otherwise. 18% is a little high IMO for buffet's, even for Disney. I don't include the tip on either sides for that reason. I don't think it's uncommon the TIW doesn't save enough to justify buying it. Remember you're not comparing to no discount necessarily since there are other discounts with AP, AAA, DVC and the Disney CC. Even restaurant.com for at times. I'd look at the TIW as if it saved 10 or 12 %, not 20%, because that's closer to reality for DVC members.

Oh yeah, I agree on the tip, I don't consider it when comparing prices, I was just noting that it was enforced on any meal that you use the TIW on.

It is changeable if there's an issue but it isn't normally worth it plus normally when I have enough issue that I need to speak to a manager, I don't dock the tip and talk to a manager both. IMO the only real difference here is that there isn't any flexibility if there's an issue and that 18% is too much for a buffet IMO even given that Disney buffet's tend to be a higher level of service.

We are considering not doing the Dining Plan this year and instead do TIW. But our math is still showing that with the $150 buy in the TIW and adding tax, it will actually cost more than it saves us. It's really close for us.

You're clearly not drinking enough at Epcot!

Does TIW count for the outside "drink" stands, wine and beer in the shops Italy, Mexico and Germany? I can't remember and since a large portion of our group is over 21...that will be something we will be doing probably! Can you use TIW for the alcohol portion of the bill at restaurants even though the food is with the Dining Plan? Just asking to get a hold on this :rolleyes1

TIW does not work at the beverage kiosks. You can go into the Rose and Crown Pub and use it and take drinks to go. It does not work at LaCava de Tequila or Tutto Gusto, unfortunately. Spice Road takes TIW, but I don't know if they have beverages to go. You can use TIW at the TS restaurants if there are items not covered by the DDP, including alcohol, appetizers, salads and soups. Just remember, the person who is on the card must be present and we were frequently asked for ID when presenting the TIW card this past trip.

I agree our last trip I was always handing off my TIW, DVC Card and my drivers license!

Handing them off? To merchants to get the discount or for others to use the discount on your TIW membership?
