Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Summer 2017 (replaces ToT)

Well, there it is. I kinda figured it was going this way. At least the concept art does look goood, but it's a shame to lost the ToT which is such a classic. I can be thankful that it looks like the DHS one is safe. I don't like how they are saying other Marvel rides will follow later, because it would help people swallow this bitter pill if an all-new Marvel Land came with it.

This bothers me a lot. We were discussing this in another topic, and I just don't understand the idea of turning a classic ride into something that is just pop culture. Sure, GOTG is a cool movie, but that's pretty much it. It's not something that will become a classic.

This is the part that bothers me - it's probably a knee jerk and reaching reaction but do we start to get of attractions like POTC, Haunted Mansion, Soarin' etc because they don't have film characters/film universe attached? More film character merchandise, more money spent by your average tourist who do only go once or twice?

I feel like throwing up. Universal builds a whole new Harry Potterland and Disney puts a seat cover on one its best rides. Cheap. I think that dangly ear lobe is messing with Joe's thinking. Just build a third gate you tight empty suits. Leave the good stuff alone.

This would've been great to turn Innoventions into something worth doing. Nah, lets ruin DCA instead.
Are these the same people who replaced Mulholland Drive with Goofy's Sky School, and the Orange Stinger with Silly Symphony Swings? Personally the original rides were better themed.

I've always felt that DCA's overall theme was too narrow, so I can't really get too worked up over the fact that Disney is starting to broaden it (see Cars Land and Bug's Land, whose relationship to California is tenuous at best). I just hope that they'll spend enough money on it to bring the quality we've come to expect.

At least Carsland can be justified by Route 66 and the desert landscape. Bug's Land has always been a disaster theming-wise with the rest of the park. Why not just rip it out and leave the California-themed stuff alone? There's still a ton of California-based theming they could do if they really wanted to. I always thought a California themed park in California was a little weird anyway, but if you're going to do it, don't do it, then screw it up. Should have just made it a movie-based park when they opened. Do any Marvel properties even take place in California except maybe the location of Tony Stark's mansion?

Disney does amazing theming and I'm sure the designers will do the transformation justice. And to be clear, I've never watched GOTG or know anything about the story line, other than it has "superheroes". DCA should have Marvel in place for its long-term expansion goals because Disneyland still has too much traffic (in comparison to DCA), and it will only get worse with Star Wars Land.

JMO, "California Adventure" is only a name. They can change that at any time to suit the park's evolution. I wouldn't be surprised if both parks merge into one "super" Disneyland in a few decades.

I have to give it up to Iger to make something out of the half day park that Eisner built when he was in the chair. Same with Hollywood Studios.

I sense a rename of DCA eventually.

Has this been posted yet??

I had heard rumors but this is the first I've heard an official announcement...

"Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, announced to a packed house of fans that the Guardians of the Galaxy are coming to Disney California Adventure park!

Beginning in summer 2017, the outrageous and irreverent gang will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! – a comically high-energy, rocking new adventure. Guests will be right in the mix with characters from the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films.

Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.

The new attraction will anchor a broader universe of Super Heroes that will grow over time at Disney California Adventure park. This exciting new presence will transform the structure currently housing The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ (scheduled to close in early 2017) into an epic new adventure, enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation with all-new visual and audio effects to create a variety of ride experiences. Guests will experience multiple random, unique ride profiles in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift will rock to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.

Joe's left earlobe is disturbing....:crazy2:

Aloha,
I trust Disney knows what it is doing. It appears they are keeping ToT at WDW...which from all accounts is the superior to the DCA ToT. And due to various legalities, will be constructing a Marvelland (ML) only at DCA. The GOTG apparently is the first of many new rides at DCA in the new ML. The growth options are endless. GOTG can expand in many directions. I think ML will be a huge hit and will be a good counterweight to SWL at DL. Both DCA and DL will have iconic lands drawing big crowds making both parks (DCA and DL) vital and highly successful. I'm confident that both SWL and ML received the green light at the same time. In order to (IOT) prevent a huge park attendance shift to DL due to SWL, something BIG had to be done at DCA. ML is the answer. GOTG is just the start. I'm confident Disney has a solution with the theme transition at DCA from Hollywood to ML. They're not stupid. It appears they have a lot of plans for DLR and it would be poor marketing to release everything at one shot.

I think one of the worst parts is going to be the view. Being that ToT is one of the main attractions you see...

I agree. You could sort of 'theme in' in your own mind the view of ToT from other places in the park. After all hotels are seen along city streets (Buena Vista), on desert highways (Cars Land), from fun piers at the beach (Paradise Pier & the Wharf), even in our national parks (Grizz Flats). But this steampunk cross between a sewer plant and a power station will not fit in thematically anywhere other than (I assume) the rest of the 'Marvel Land' that is to come.

Horrible, horrible decision. Just horrible.

ToT to GOTG makes me want to head over to Universal Orlando - where they have a LAND for Marvel. :rolleyes1

It's all very, very sad Disney. :sad2: Build us something new! Or at least build where you have old stuff just sitting around. Not something that is popular and enjoyed just as it is.

:worried: :( :guilty:  :sad1:

I am just so so sad. And in shock. I can't believe it's really going to happen. The Twilight Zone & old Hollywood theming is what makes that attraction so amazing. It's my favorite attraction. I'm so disappointed!

You can bet we'll be going on it a LOT during our New Year's trip.

I just don't understand the idea of turning a classic ride into something that is just pop culture.

I don't understand it either. I think it is a big mistake. If they want to do super hero stuff, create new attractions for it. Don't destroy an existing and amazing attraction to do it.

Well I know what I am riding next month!

All in all I don't really see the "fit" in the area of DCA....I mean I get the ride as and idea but just am curious where the future attractions will fit in with the surrounding areas...Bug's land is cool but a Marvel area if done right could be much better for all ages.

Yes. I agree. This decision is so unappealing to me and it makes me sick. :(

I'm excited to see this. And it's not like other rides haven't been rethemed or overlaid. Soarin' just got totally changed. POTC has Johnny Depp, IASW has all the characters in. There's a booming seasonal business in HM/NBC merch. It's hardly new.

We're not once-or-twice tourists. We've been AP holders in the past, we're DVC owners and we love the parks. ToT isn't a "classic" in my mind. Nothing in DCA is old enough for that. ToT in California is not as good as the one in Florida and if they're going to give one a fresh look, it makes sense to jazz up CA, even though it would fit better in DHS. I hope this is a sign of more to come.
