Planes, Trains & Antitussives, Alaksan Wonder Cruise - All done! Complete 11/21

Holy moly I was 4 updates behind.....:faint: Admittedly I didn't read all the chatter; just the updates.

Cilantro dressing. :lmao: You hate cilantro.

You room looks lovely and I like the view.

Bluewater Cafe looks YUM!

Cough? UGH!

I think totem poles are so cool. I love how they all tell a story.

The hallowed out tree is super cool. Neat that they were able to salvage it.

The flowers in the rose garden are stunning!

The flatbread at the TeaHouse looks delicious! I always love a report with tons of food porn.

Save On Meats reminds me of a place we had in Cypress called Meats Gourmet; I think it still might be there. It was part butcher shop and then they made the most incredible sub sandwiches. It was off Ball and Moody I think. Next time I am out, we should see if it's still around. I don;t think they had tables though.

Welcome to my Alaskan cruise trip report!

Thanks! Finally made it over here. Been a good day for catching up.
I'm hoping even to start writing soon!

And we flew in a float plane that landed on a lake.

Which is fine... unless you're at the back... in the only seat... and the rest of the plane is filled with smokey forest fire fighting hoses... and the clouds are low (so, so is the plane) and it's extremely gusty so the plane goes backwards and sideways and up and down as much as it goes forward.............................

First off there will be no sunrise pictures.

Shocked!!

With sunrise occurring at around 4:00AM even if I was awake then, I decided to go back to sleep rather than stand out on the balcony in a robe in 50 degree weather.

You won't go outside in T-shirt temperatures?

the updates may come a little faster than my current WDW trip report

Oh, Lord. Sorry, but I doubt I'll be able to keep up.
I may scale back the comments in order to do so...

I don't know what possessed us to travel on Friday of a major holiday weekend.
Perhaps we just weren't thinking when we made the reservations.
Then take into account that only three days earlier terrorists had blown up a bunch of people in Turkey.

As a result, to say security was really tight would be like saying spanx are comfortable.
Cops were everywhere.

It's been just a horrible stretch of violence all over, hasn't it?
The extra security is definitely not surprising.

The GPS quickly rerouted me and I got a fun little tour around the back end of the airport, all 4.7 miles around it!

Very nice. Should've brought a picnic.

Our plane left at 9:50 and by this time it was 7:15, all the news programs were saying arrive 3 hours before international flights.

I find that you can easily knock 30 minutes off those times.

At least our car won’t be as dirty when we get back. It hasn’t been washed in almost a year now due to the drought.

You'll have to do a road trip, just to get the car washed!

"Where is your van? Don't you two normally show up in a van?" Great. Now we're notorious!

No, no, no. Not "notorious"... famous!

or infamous

What? Nothing! Nothing at all!

I'm like, "I know that guy!" And I wanted to blurt out, "Hey Tony!" Then I got a hold of myself and realized that's Michael Weatherly, he doesn't know me.

Never watched the show... but did you ever figure out what he was doing?

We boarded the bus to the remote terminal and the bus driver made a comment about "Nice to see you ladies again!" We were both a little stunned, "You don't remember me?" He asked, "I drove you two ladies on your way to Florida."

Definitely notorious.

Famous!

infamous

going up the hill, the scooter konked out. I started pushing it, not so easy with two carry ons and a purse.

Ugh. Well, that's no way to start a vacation.

Once she seemed settled I said, "Can I now take your Overflannel out from under my butt?" So I stood up in my seat and pulled the Overflannel off the seat, and that's when I found the bag with our donuts.
Our flat donuts.

Whoops!

Our stewardess was a complete and total idiot. When she asked me what I wanted to drink, I asked if they had any V8.

She looked at me as if I had three heads and said, "What's that?" :confused3

What??? Who doesn't know what V8 is?
Wait... Was she quite young? I bet my DDs don't know.

But then again... shouldn't you know what you serve on your plane?

Until I noticed this.

:lmao:

When they saw Fran the gentleman directed us in completely the opposite direction and we ended up going through the window for foreign diplomats, with no wait!

Score!

I started to pull them off the line and a porter approached us. Fran was going to wave him off, but I disagreed.

Best.
Decision.
Ever!

I should think so!

I was fairly happy with the room, it was huge and was totally going to meet our needs for the next two nights. Fran hated the place and said, "Future reference, never stay at this hotel again." Oops!

What was it that she didn't like?
Looks quite fine to me.

Waking Fran was about the same trouble as usual

So she just popped up and was raring to go?

"The menu has changed then. I wouldn't have chosen to eat here with this menu." Oops again on my part!

You're just not having any luck!
Or maybe I should say, Fran isn't.

I do have to say that on holidays and we have champagne, he is meticulous about making the glasses even in their pours. At least the first round.

 That kills me. "At least the first round."

I woke up around 2AM. Something I forgot to mention earlier was that the day before we left, I started to develop a cough. Immediately I started to load up on Vitamin C and started taking Zicam (zinc). It seemed to be working for the most part, but my sinuses were fairly plugged and I couldn't breathe.

Uh, oh...

These are the elusive antitussives that are referenced in the title of the TR, but stay tuned, the plot thickens.

Oh? Curiouser and curiouser.

She told me that she felt really awful and thought if she stayed in the room she would hopefully feel better by the cruise. I gave her the Zicam, Vitamin C and hoped it would kick in and make her feel better.

Oh, crap. Fran too!?!?

If you plan to remain in Stanley Park for 4 hours or more, just pay for the whole day up front, it's $11 and it's good all day in the park. I didn't realize this and only paid $3.25 for the first hour thinking that each lot was separate. Once the 1st hour was up, I ended up shelling out $3.25 each hour for four more hours, because the $11 per day option was no longer available to me.

Ugh. But thanks for the heads up.

In addition to the totems, they had a tourist trap here

Pretty much anywhere in a city (or near one) you see a totem pole, you're going to see a tourist trap.
It's like a beacon.

Next stop was the Hollowed Out Tree, which has been an attraction since the 1890's. It began to decay and started leaning in (80's/90's) and was almost demolished, but some activists got together and raised enough money to have it reinforced and uprighted.

I read the sign you took a picture of.
I think I'd prefer it if they left it lying down.
Especially since it was already down.

Everything was very good, but the waiter didn't seem to want to bring our bread. It became a running joke. We had to ask for it three times.

And every time I ask, the tip goes down accordingly.

She had a doctor covering for her and we gave her a call and asked her if she could call in a prescription for an inhaler as well as the coughing pills and she said that she would do it. However later when I called the pharmacy, I was informed that they could only fill a prescription from a Canadian doctor. Several years ago Fran had a prescription filled at a pharmacy in British Columbia, but now that I think about it our doctor had a Canadian colleague write the actual prescription. So much for solving the problem easily!

That sucks. But doesn't surprise me.

When I went to bed, Fran was hacking and coughing like a Sea lion.

Oh, crap. Just what you want before going on your cruise.

I hope that you make it back soon! At least before I do the next update!

Apparently not!

I woke up early, about 5AM. I decided to take a bath.

::yes:: We have water. Lots and lots of water.
(Why, yes... As a matter of fact, I am rubbing it in! :lmao:)

When I got to our room Fran was all dressed and in one of the Living Room chairs.

Sounds like she was maybe feeling a bit better?

Since I rarely wear jeans at home, I hadn’t put them on since I was in Louisiana, and they were practically falling off me.

Good for you!!

Of course we had to pay for parking here as well.

What? At a Costco???? Ridiculous!

At home we love to visit the Costco buffet, but here they had strange buffet offerings, my mom liked the seaweed with some sort of cracker. Fran and I didn’t see anything that sounded very good.

I hardly touch the buffet, myself. I agree. Often it's weird stuff that I'm not slightly interested in. Must be a Canadian thing.

I also noticed that people seemed to be much pushier with their carts than in Southern California. More people were on a mission and not just “looking”. Maybe that was the whole pay for parking thing, you don’t take your time if you’re paying a premium to keep your car there.

Pushier? That surprises me. Was it pushy? Or clueless. I see a lot of the latter. A lot.

I showed my parents the menu of a DDD location (Guy Fieri’s Food Network show, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives) while we were still at the hotel and my Dad was fine with it.

Cool! I've done that a few times.

Here is the place, Save On Meats, it was half restaurant, half butcher shop.

Looks like a place I'd love to try.

It was your typical coffee shop/diner kind of place. I think my Dad kind of likes these places, but my Mom never lets him go to them.

Aw, poor Dad.

I went with the S.O.M. burger and upgraded my French fries to Poutine.

How was the poutine? I think you said you've had it before, no?

I guess she thought that she was feeling better and was having an appetite.

Well, that's good.

Needless to say, Mom is not a fan of Triple D type restaurants. Fran suggested that we not take my parents to them ever again.

:lmao:

We checked out the view.

Great view!

I loved how this building had a grass roof.

Where are the sheep? Or the goats? What gives!?!?!?

We went past the casino where Fran and I would be spending our last night of the trip.

Oh, man. Now I'm nervous that Fran won't like it and it'll be all my fault!

Fran was still feeling crappy and cranky

Crap. Too bad. But... better than the day before? Worse? About the same?

Wow! So exciting! Loved the totem poles and always love seeing all the pictures of food. I'm drooling!

Sorry you guys weren't feeling well and still have a cough. But congratulations on losing 25 pounds!!!!!

Well there is plenty of food to come, and lots of scenery as well! Thanks for the congratulations! I had actually lost the weight before the Naked Jim trip, put some back and lost it again. Right now I'm about 3 lbs away from where I was the day of the cruise, but with the "procedure" I have next week, I'm pretty sure that weight will fall right off. :crazy2:

Bummer that your mom couldn't taste the pesto; it looked pretty good otherwise. Also, a HUGE drag that Fran was feeling crappy still. I"m sure that was really putting a damper on the whole trip so far. :( Hoping things get better, but it sounds pretty bad... not holding my breath.

Well it was a "pesto mayo" so who knows what THAT means! :lmao: I just love places that have good "greasy spoon" food. Eventually things will get "better" but that all depends on your definition of "better".

Your room at the Pan Pacific looks really nice! That bed looks so comfy. Nice view too, I love that it looked to be a corner with 2 windows. Great you could see the ships.

Omigosh! It was such a comfy bed! And yes we had a corner room, I totally loved watching the next morning!

Congrats on the weight loss!

Thanks! Now it's on to goal #2. I can't wait for them to finish with the pool so I can start swimming and cancel the gym membership.

How exciting we are getting closer to that cruise!

This sounds like a good day. Lunch looked great a butcher and a diner I think I have found Polly heaven I would faint... I would live in there. Fresh meat yes please!

Next update will include at least part of the cruise stuff. I should have gone in the butcher portion just to check it out.

That sounds like one expensive mall! Same here where is my old navy and Gap!

Everything in Vancouver was expensive. I remember it very differently back in 1998.

Can't wait to get onboard with you I can almost taste that salt air now...

Hmmmm....I'm not sure I noticed salt air, but then again I live near the beach so it could be what I'm used to. That and raw sewage if you ever hear anything about the American news. Google "Long Beach Beach closure" if you're curious.

Omg 2.4 million tonnes of sewage! I wish I had done that after dinner lol! I feel that surfs up and a lot more with it

Uh yep, if you can see Costco from the RiverRock then that's the one I'm talking about. Did you dare enter the HELL that is Richmond Costco? Guess I'll have to wait til the end of your trip report to find out ;-)
Love the RR, DH's work Xmas party was held there last year.

Oooh! A Christmas party at the River Rock! That sounds like fun!

And yes....parking and just driving in downtown Vancity is pretty much the #1 reason we never go downtown. :crazy2:

If I lived in Richmond or the like, the public transport seems to be pretty good for getting in and out.

I'm here! I was out of town but ready to catch up!

:welcome:

Holy moly I was 4 updates behind.....:faint: Admittedly I didn't read all the chatter; just the updates.

Yeah, well that's what happens when you have a life!

Cilantro dressing. :lmao: You hate cilantro.

:headache:

You room looks lovely and I like the view.

1st or 2nd room?

Bluewater Cafe looks YUM!

I enjoyed it and I know my parents did. I think Fran liked what she had.

Cough? UGH!

Yeah, ugh. It's still lingering.

I think totem poles are so cool. I love how they all tell a story.

Sounds like something you would say! I forgot that they told stories, I just thought the carvings were neat and artistic.

The hallowed out tree is super cool. Neat that they were able to salvage it.

Here's a couple historical images, they were on another sign. I thought I took a picture of it, but I guess not.

The flowers in the rose garden are stunning!

It's amazing what beautiful displays you can make when it rains enough!

The flatbread at the TeaHouse looks delicious! I always love a report with tons of food porn.

You know I will have that!

According to Yelpers, they closed somewhere in 2010.

If you live in Richmond, Burnaby or North/West Vancouver then public transportation makes it very easy to get into the city. Unfortunately we now live further out and public transport sucks out here :( The nearest skytrain station is a 20+ minute drive away. Buses take FOREVER. So we have no choice but to drive. The trade off is a bigger house that is way more affordable. And lots of stores and parks etc out here so it's walkable locally. Anyway, sorry for my tangent lol

At 8:30 Mom & I took the luggage to Pan Pacific.

That was early. We walked past the Pan Pacific and it looked gorgeous, but it is a little rich for our taste.

Since I rarely wear jeans at home, I hadn’t put them on since I was in Louisiana, and they were practically falling off me.

That is amazing news. Well done.

Here is the place, Save On Meats, it was half restaurant, half butcher shop.

This looks intriguing.

and upgraded my French fries to Poutine.

Graham was in heaven when I showed him your photo. He fell in love with Poutine when he was in Canada last year while I was at Disneyland.

Fran got the breakfast sandwich, she was going to share with me, and all of a sudden decided that mine might not be enough. I guess she thought that she was feeling better and was having an appetite.

That looks also nice. I love the look of those chips.

After leaving the hotel, we drove up Robson street looking for a store with a belt. All there was (besides trendy eateries) were Gucci, Prada, Dior, Hermes, not my kind of shopping.

We made "friends" with Robson Street, too. We did find a Starbucks and a Lush at least.

That view is stunning.

We were taking the train back to the hotel.

I loved the Skytrain.

Corinna

I'm hoping even to start writing soon!

I hope your work schedule has mellowed out some.

Which is fine... unless you're at the back... in the only seat... and the rest of the plane is filled with smokey forest fire fighting hoses... and the clouds are low (so, so is the plane) and it's extremely gusty so the plane goes backwards and sideways and up and down as much as it goes forward.............................
puke_zpsztsuuprc.gif

No, that doesn't sound fun.

Shocked!!

Normally on cruises, I love to take Sunrise photos.

You won't go outside in T-shirt temperatures?

T-shirt temperatures are 68-78 degrees Fahrenheit
Above that are tank top temperatures
Anything below 65-68 is long sleeve T-shirt weather, below 60 you need an overflannel or overshirt over your long sleeve shirt.
In the lower 50s, that's when the jackets need to start coming out. You see it rarely gets in the 50s in So Cal when I am outside, so I rarely have a need for such accoutrements.

Oh, Lord. Sorry, but I doubt I'll be able to keep up.
I may scale back the comments in order to do so...

You know, it was a lot easier to write that when I had the first two updates already written. I'm finding it a tad bit more difficult to keep up that pace now that I'm back home and have to do my other duties. Especially if we ever want to get that other place cleaned out.

It's been just a horrible stretch of violence all over, hasn't it?
The extra security is definitely not surprising.

It's been awful, and it seems like every day something new and tragic happens.

Very nice. Should've brought a picnic.

Yeah, right.

I find that you can easily knock 30 minutes off those times.

That is when you aren't traveling with lots of carry ons and scooters. :rolleyes1

You'll have to do a road trip, just to get the car washed!

Actually we took the 21st century car to the dealership to have an electronic window repaired, and that's why we had to start up the 73 Cougar. They washed it before they gave it back to us. First time in at least a year.

No, no, no. Not "notorious"... famous!

What? Nothing! Nothing at all!

Whatever it is, it means we don't get in under the radar....

Never watched the show... but did you ever figure out what he was doing?

I think he was saying, "Suckaaaaaaaasssssss!" either that or "Want a piece of me? Too bad!"

Famous!

infamous

Either way NOT incognito.

Ugh. Well, that's no way to start a vacation.

It never is.

What??? Who doesn't know what V8 is?
Wait... Was she quite young? I bet my DDs don't know.

But then again... shouldn't you know what you serve on your plane?

I guess the whole "I coulda had a V8!" (((Head smack))) is long long gone.

::yes::

I should think so!

Yeah, she likes to do everything for herself. I'm more than happy to let others do menial tasks for me. I have enough of my own stuff to do, why should I have to do something I could have someone else do?

What was it that she didn't like?
Looks quite fine to me.

No air circulation in the bedroom. A/C was only in the living room.
No TV in the bedroom.
No room to get in and out on her side of the bed.
No nightstand on her side.

So she just popped up and was raring to go?

Yeah when that happens, I will alert the media!

You're just not having any luck!
Or maybe I should say, Fran isn't.

Well her bad luck is my worse luck.

 That kills me. "At least the first round."

Well you have to understand the wine dynamic in my family. My parents have been in a Wine Tasting Group (the same group) since 1970 when we moved to California. They take their wine seriously and brought me up to do so as well. Mom has slowed down recently but me and Dad still keep up the traditions. Christmas and Thanksgiving are usually 3-4 bottle holidays.

Uh, oh...

Oh? Curiouser and curiouser.

Stay tuned....

Oh, crap. Fran too!?!?

She usually goes down first.

Ugh. But thanks for the heads up.

I see why so many people who live there use public transportation.

Pretty much anywhere in a city (or near one) you see a totem pole, you're going to see a tourist trap.
It's like a beacon.

Noted.

Harder photo op if it's on the ground. :confused3

And every time I ask, the tip goes down accordingly.

Exactly!

That sucks. But doesn't surprise me.

Yeah, I had forgotten that she got a colleague to handle it. In Mexico it's awesome, you just walk into any pharmacia and ask for what you want. They probably don't have pain killers, but they have some stuff.

Oh, crap. Just what you want before going on your cruise.

No it isn't. There was a point when we were really hoping that no one would bar her from getting on the ship.

Apparently not!

:lmao:

::yes:: We have water. Lots and lots of water.
(Why, yes... As a matter of fact, I am rubbing it in! :lmao:)

I'll take our lack of water over your temperatures. Once my jacuzzi is all fixed everything will be OK.

Sounds like she was maybe feeling a bit better?

She seemed to think so.

Good for you!!

Thanks!

What? At a Costco???? Ridiculous!

I know! I was like.

I hardly touch the buffet, myself. I agree. Often it's weird stuff that I'm not slightly interested in. Must be a Canadian thing.

At home it's great! They usually have some kind of sausages, a couple hot foods like their burgers, maybe burritos, chicken nuggets, pot stickers, rice bowls, noodle bowls. There's often chips and some kind of salsa, deli meats wrapped with some kind of cheese, yogurt, cookies, or popcorn chips. When the special vendors are there, its ever better!

Pushier? That surprises me. Was it pushy? Or clueless. I see a lot of the latter. A lot.

No, it was "people on a mission". We were just meandering and looking to see what was different and we almost got mowed down a time or two since these people were not tolerant of us just sort of browsing.

Cool! I've done that a few times.

Whenever we go somewhere that isn't Disney I try to look for places on DDD. I also keep a list on my phone when we see places on TV we'd like to visit in case we ever get there.

Looks like a place I'd love to try.

It was pretty good.

Aw, poor Dad.

Mom keeps a pretty tight ship.

How was the poutine? I think you said you've had it before, no?

It was a long time ago, in Alberta, I don't really remember it well. That was before digital photos and food porn. The gravy was good and the curds were fresh, the fries were hot, so I liked it.

Well, that's good.

I think she even finished her sandwich.

Great view!

I know, huh?

Where are the sheep? Or the goats? What gives!?!?!?

:rotfl2:

Oh, man. Now I'm nervous that Fran won't like it and it'll be all my fault!

I'll take away your worries, she loved it, the bed was comfy and the A/C worked great.

Crap. Too bad. But... better than the day before? Worse? About the same?

I think she felt a little better, she wanted food.

Omg 2.4 million tonnes of sewage! I wish I had done that after dinner lol! I feel that surfs up and a lot more with it

Luckily I had no plans to enjoy the beach last week!

If you live in Richmond, Burnaby or North/West Vancouver then public transportation makes it very easy to get into the city. Do they have "Park and Ride"? That's what we have here. I haven't used public transportation in LA since 1984, so I have no first hand experience. There are hardly any places here that are walkable locally, unless you live in a highly concentrated area. They are putting a lot of lofts above retail spaces here, that's the new craze. However for us, we have a big house on a bigger lot (by So Cal standards) and wouldn't have it any other way. I can walk to a gas station, taco stand and a Teriyaki restaurant. Never been to the food places and I've only driven to the gas station, but folks that have worked for us (cleaning lady, contractors) have walked to AM/PM for drinks and snacks.

Congrats on the weight loss!

Costco sounds like a nightmare! I love going to my Costco...plenty of delicious samples and free parking! Your food looks delicious. I love the look of the DDD place!

Jill in CO

Yes the stations out here have Park and Ride so we've used them when we go downtown on a weekend (which again probably hasn't happened since last summer lol). At least that's a bit more convenient!

I have read so many of your trip reports and wanted to finally comment. I love your reports and look forward to the Alaska Cruise!
Thanks for so much great reading.
The husband and I are looking at a few years out until we can take any Disney trips (or really any) with two kids in college and one a high school sophomore. It will be a long few years but made better reading the great trip reports in the Disboard!!:disrocks:

Thanks for sharing all of your adventures:jumping1:

Also, congrats on the weight loss. As soon as I turned 40 my metabolism shut down so I appreciate the effort weight loss takes.:flower:

I hope your work schedule has mellowed out some.

A bit. For now... We'll see how the next set of "days off" go.

You know I'm just bugging you.
Actually, T-shirt temps up here are dependent on season.
After a cold winter, when the temps reach 50, everyone takes off their coats and run around in T-shirts.
After a hot summer, when the temps dip to 50, everyone puts on their coats and shiver.

That is when you aren't traveling with lots of carry ons and scooters. :rolleyes1

D'oh. Of course. Stupid of me.

Actually we took the 21st century car to the dealership to have an electronic window repaired, and that's why we had to start up the 73 Cougar. They washed it before they gave it back to us. First time in at least a year.

If it was under warranty, then it's all good.
Otherwise... that's an expensive wash!

I think he was saying, "Suckaaaaaaaasssssss!" either that or "Want a piece of me? Too bad!"

I guess the whole "I coulda had a V8!" (((Head smack))) is long long gone.

Guess so.

No air circulation in the bedroom. A/C was only in the living room.
No TV in the bedroom.
No room to get in and out on her side of the bed.
No nightstand on her side.

Ah. So legitimate complaints.

Yeah when that happens, I will alert the media!

Well her bad luck is my worse luck.

Harder photo op if it's on the ground. :confused3

But more natural.

There was a point when we were really hoping that no one would bar her from getting on the ship.

Oh man. Never thought of that.

I'll take our lack of water over your temperatures.

 Especially since ours is frozen for half the year!

Once my jacuzzi is all fixed everything will be OK.

Not fixed yet? How about the pool? I think you said it was supposed to be done by the time you got back.

Up here it's "Would you like to try some dirt wrapped in slimy seaweed?"
And when there actually is something decent, you can't get any because there's a throng already waiting for the next batch to be done.

No, it was "people on a mission". We were just meandering and looking to see what was different and we almost got mowed down a time or two since these people were not tolerant of us just sort of browsing.

Well, that's just rude. So.... un-Canadian.

Whenever we go somewhere that isn't Disney I try to look for places on DDD.

Me too!

The gravy was good and the curds were fresh, the fries were hot, so I liked it.

Good!

I'll take away your worries, she loved it, the bed was comfy and the A/C worked great.

<phew>

Catching up.

Sorry about the cough. Hope that Fran felt better. That's not a good way to start a vacay.
Canadian pricing is about the same as Aussie pricing. It is much more expensive than in the US.

Meals are looking amazing, as always.

That was early. We walked past the Pan Pacific and it looked gorgeous, but it is a little rich for our taste.

It really was a bit too rich for us. But I had no idea what to expect with my parents and Fran so we just bit the bullet.

That is amazing news. Well done.

Thank you, next goal is a 20 more.

This looks intriguing.

I really wished that I would have checked out the butcher shop side.

Graham was in heaven when I showed him your photo. He fell in love with Poutine when he was in Canada last year while I was at Disneyland.

It's pretty good. Too bad no one serves it in healthy southern California.

That looks also nice. I love the look of those chips.

I didn't try any, but she seemed to like them.

We made "friends" with Robson Street, too. We did find a Starbucks and a Lush at least.

All we did was drive up and say "forget it"!

That view is stunning.

Yes it is!

I loved the Skytrain.

It seemed like a very efficient form of transportation.

Congrats on the weight loss!

Costco sounds like a nightmare! I love going to my Costco...plenty of delicious samples and free parking! Your food looks delicious. I love the look of the DDD place!

Jill in CO

Thanks! Yeah, I can see where dowe town it isn't such a great place. I have no idea what was up with the weird samples. Even in the SF Bay area where my folks live the samples are great and they have a huge variety of ethnic palates.

Yes the stations out here have Park and Ride so we've used them when we go downtown on a weekend (which again probably hasn't happened since last summer lol). At least that's a bit more convenient!

I would love to convince Fran to try the train into DTLA. Maybe once we dig out from our

I have read so many of your trip reports and wanted to finally comment. I love your reports and look forward to the Alaska Cruise!

:welcome: thank you for deluding and joining in!

It sounds like in a few years, you'll be looking for things to do once the kids have left the nest!

Also, congrats on the weight loss. As soon as I turned 40 my metabolism shut down so I appreciate the effort weight loss takes.:flower:

I'm sure that's what happened with me. When I came back from our first DVC vacation almost 10 years ago, my weight never really recovered. I attributed it to stressful life occurrences but it was probably just my metabolism slowing. Little by little it kept creeping up until my Doctor made all these threats and ultimatums last winter. However all she gave me was crazy solutions and no medical options. Only crazy homeopathic witch doctor kind of stuff. I mean I'm OK with being natural, but if my vitals are so bad I could die in 10 years, maybe a few actual drugs might help if I don't seem to turn it around after several months of trying. I'm hopin that soon I can take off even more weight with regular exercise at home.

A bit. For now... We'll see how the next set of "days off" go.

Hope they go well for you!

I know you're messin' with me, but there is no way I could ever guess what your cold weather is like! I visited places in Canada in mild times. It was 6 degrees when I walked home to my hotel in Alberta and I thought I was going to practically die. It was so COLD! I suppose you would not appreciate when it gets to 115° here. We just say "ugh, I'm not going outside!" Rarely does it get that hot in Long Beach, but I do remember having an appointment in LA in the Fairfax district and my car temp read 119° :faint:

If it was under warranty, then it's all good.
Otherwise... that's an expensive wash!

Yeah, it's a 2003 Expedition, warranty is long gone. We got a $600 car wash with a window repair thrown in.

Not fixed yet? How about the pool? I think you said it was supposed to be done by the time you got back.

And if you EVER believed a contractor when they gave you a timeline I'd laugh. I was hoping this guy might want his money, but evidently not. We chose the plaster color a week ago and no one has been here to do squat since. I'm calling tomorrow to find out if our pool might be done by labor day!

Man! That sounds great!

Yeah we have that same thing of the throng of folks waiting, but I try and worm my way in there, elbowing the unaccompanied kids out of the way!

Sorry about the cough. Hope that Fran felt better. That's not a good way to start a vacay.

No it was not a good way to start the vacay.

Canadian pricing is about the same as Aussie pricing. It is much more expensive than in the US.

I thought Aussie pricing was more than Canadian, not that I have experience, but only from what I know you've said.

Meals are looking amazing, as always.

Well thank you very much!

That's what it's like here in Western NY too. :-)

Hope they go well for you!

Well, I'm already scheduled to work on the first day off....

It was 6 degrees when I walked home to my hotel in Alberta and I thought I was going to practically die.

I suppose you would not appreciate when it gets to 115° here.

NO!

We just say "ugh, I'm not going outside!"

I would be the same. Except instead of "ugh", I'd say "AIYYEEEEEE!!!!!"

Rarely does it get that hot in Long Beach, but I do remember having an appointment in LA in the Fairfax district and my car temp read 119° :faint:

Whoa. I can just imagine the news that day.
"There were 3 traffic fatalities, 1 homicide, 2 accidental deaths and 245 spontaneous combustions."

Yeah, it's a 2003 Expedition, warranty is long gone. We got a $600 car wash with a window repair thrown in.

Expensive... but clean!

And if you EVER believed a contractor when they gave you a timeline I'd laugh.

Nope. We built a house.

I was hoping this guy might want his money, but evidently not. We chose the plaster color a week ago and no one has been here to do squat since. I'm calling tomorrow to find out if our pool might be done by labor day!

Good luck!

That's what it's like here in Western NY too. :-)

All the northern States are gonna be cold. Some more than others, of course. Western NY is about as far north as Northern California.
Which always blows my mind, BTW.

I'm here.....I'm here!! Late as usual, but here non the less.

Your room at the port is beautiful. I love all the windows. So sorry that Fran is sick - bless her and you. Your parents are so cute.

I can't wait for the rest!
