Who Wants To Try a DIS-Meet At Gulf State Park In May-June 2016?

Randy could pilot the ship / tug. We could make a fortune!

Hang on now, I can pilot it, but "WE" can make a fortune? How's that work? Sound like I'll be getting the short end of that,

We could be like Forrest Gump, If I'm ever a shrimping boat captain you can be my deckhand, I'll even call you lieutenant Dan.

Well "we" gotta buy a boat, unless you got some gold bars in that truck of yours.

We gotta get some barges too...

Oh, I'll take Sergeant Major Plumley (watch We Were Soldiers)

Your gonna need a Commercial Diver, in case the prop gets fouled or there are any other underwater issues. I am in. I will handle Dive operations.

Blasted! Apparently we were beaten to the idea back in the late 90's according to some information I found on this link:
http://www.caravanning-oz.com/Lionel_Latest.html

I highly recommend scrolling down to 16/6/7 and the heading:
Barge RV park lets campers go with the flow

which is the update where it discusses the practice and what rivers it involved including loading ports at New Orleans, Guntersville, AL, and...wait for it...Mobile, AL. It sounded like a lot of fun. But, apparently it was shut down by the Coast Guard from what I could read due to it being unsafe.

Here's another story that is actually pretty entertaining from the perspective of someone who took one of the cruises.

Dang!

I didn't get a chance to meet up with DDo5, aka Mike, (I would if he the Mike from the Hunting with TK & Mike videos). He texted me yesterday they were headed back home, I told him safe travels, and I also point out about our meet coming up, and that he couldn't pass on it since he lives in Baldwin Co. and point him in the direction of this thread.

Would love to add another one to the group.

TK and Mike...my favorite was the Bass Fishn' episode. With the john boat named Skint Back.

I haven't joined in the cruise talk because DW and I aren't cruisers. Just doesn't appeal to us.

I did win a cruise about 10 years ago for job performance and me and DW had all expenses paid on the Seabourn Legend. Flew to St Thomas USVI and boarded there. Spent a few days around the BVI and USVI. It was nice but not something I feel compelled to repeat.

It does look like I might have a chance at going to Gulf State Park in two weeks for the weekend. DD has a colorguard competition at a high school outside of Pensacola and it is an overnight trip so we might just pull the Aliner down to Gulf and commute over to see it.

Hope it works out - it's just a plan for now. But I am always looking for a reason to head down there and it doesn't take much to get me there. And this is a legit reason.

We shall see.

Bama Ed

PS - naturally I will scope everyone's campsite and talk to the rangers (did I mention they have arresting authority) about some members of our party in May-June. I also owe it to do some restaurant research (purely for academic purposes) in advance of our summer trip.

Not sure if it's still there but Sea and Suds was good and reasonable. The Denny's there was also the best one we've ever eaten at. I'd also suggest getting some royal reds ( a shrimp/lobster) crustacean from a market and boiling them up dip in butter like lobster.

Have fun at GSP. Take a look at my site. I wasn't worried about it when I made the reservation, but I've bought the new camper since then and I'm a little longer. It looks like I'll fit from looking at Google Earth, but a good walk around is always better.

Teamubr, How long is the new unit ? Most sites there are pretty equal. Your site has a small overgrowth area to shield you from view of the road. At times it's a little swampy. Depending on how recently it has rained. You may can call the office and get the exact length but I bet you'll be okay even if you overhang some.

Do we have to worry about size? We qualify as big rig at 40'11". Hope we fit in 99. I did look on Google Earth, I think we should be ok.

I have stayed in many different sites. First with my 29 foot Bullet and twice now with my 32 foot Fifth Wheel. We always have had room to fit and have never had anything blocking the rear of the sites. Garneska I am pretty certain you won't have a problem. It looks like there is a gap between your site and the group of trees. That's a good area being an easy in and out loop.

I agree with Flametamr. Big rigs will have no problem at Gulf. All sites have a couple feet of overhang on the rear and driver's side.

Flametamr,

The new 5er is 42 1/2 ft. The truck is another 22. Axles are nearly midway on the trailer leaving a big rear overhang. See pic. I'm good with pushing the wheels back to the rear as long as there isn't anything behind me. It looked like there was some growth behind the sites, but still enough room for everything to fit fine.

I don't forsee any of you having any trouble at GSP. Those sites are plenty big for all of you. If Randy can get that F450 of his and that 42 foot Sandpiper in there you all are in good shape.

Just as an FYI for you guys coming in. I was looking into some new stuff for the family and I to attend or see and we have never done the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL. There is a chance we may make a day of it and ride over there (I know Bishop, your backyard) and check the museum out on a day when the Blue Angels are doing their practice flights so the girls can see that as well. I attached a copy of the 2016 practice schedule below for any of you interested.

Also, a link to the museum.

J, As long as you unhook I feel certain you will be fine. If Bama_Ed can't check when he is there I will ride down there and measure for you. My bike needs some exercise anyway. See my pic below how I usually park. I had tons of room to back up or park the truck in line but I was splitting the difference for my drains. I also could just pull in and out with out any trouble. This is the same spot I reserved during the meet. Lots of room to park and entertain. An added bonus they never say anything so far about parking on the grass.
