I get married on 30 September 2013

What is the best way to go about getting my marriage licence?
What is the easiest method since Iam in the UK.

I don't want to really waste valuable holiday time trying to find a court house near International Drive and sitting filling out paper work when I could have that all done before I go.

How did other non-American's do it?

Thanks

We went to the court house as it really doesn't take that much time. There isn't much paperwork, its one basic form.

You can do it in the UK but there is a certain timeframe you need to do it in, you'll need to find a notary which can be expensive and i've heard of it getting lost in the post.

You can do it by mail. You can download the Brevard County Request for Marriage License Information or email marriagelicenseinformation@brevardclerk.us. The link was very slow to open, so you might be stuck with email or with calling 321-637-5413.

You'll then need to have a solicitor in the UK certify the application and then mail it back with the fee and copy of your photo ID.

Carrie has more details here. She covers UK brides too.

Yes, lost in the post is bad, and the timeframe can be quite tight, as mentioned above.

At this point you are awfully close to your date for all the mailing back and forth that's required. Even if you can fax or email in the initial request form, they'll still need to send you the papers to have notarized, and you'll need to mail those back to Florida. Then they'll need to mail the actual license back to you in the UK before you leave for your wedding.

I'd just go pick it up at a courthouse when you get there.

You really do need to make sure of a couple of things right away. First off, talk to a local person at WDW and make double sure which part of the Disney resorts you are getting married at. Walt Disney World is divided in two counties and you MUST get the correct paperwork for the county in the part of WDW you get married in. Getting married at the Yacht Club or Wedding Chapel is not the same as getting married at ESPN Wide World of Sports. You are most likely going to get married in Orange County since that’s where the majority of cool wedding spots are at WDW. I’m assuming you’re getting married on the Disney resort property.

Lurkyloo gave you both court houses' information and if you can, maybe you need to get in touch of someone local to the Orlando area who can act as your agent. If you get on this TODAY you could contact someone there (I have names of professionals if you need them) have that person get the forms for you tomorrow and FedEx (overnight mail) them to you. Then you can send them back to your agent who can also act as a runner. Even if you are using Disney Wedding Planners you will need someone else to do your running around to do non-Disney things related to your wedding.

Even if you do it that way, make double sure to show up to Florida at least 2 business days early so you can go to the correct courthouse in person if necessary and get this done. You don't want to take chances on this issue. My wife and I flew down from the Washington D. C. area and I don't think it was any easier for us being U. S. citizens. We still had to follow the rules and get someone (a local friend who acted as our “agent” to drive us to the courthouse to get our license 2 days beforehand.

Spend a little extra money and call the Disney folks and make sure what county your wedding spot is in and then call the courthouse for that particular county and get their instructions. They’ve all been through this before with people from far away places. The good thing is, you speak English. Just think what this must be like for someone coming from Rio or Russia.

I am thinking its going to be easier to just show up at the court house rather than try and organise it through the mail. We had so much hassle sending our signed contracts to Disney in the post, we had to email our planner and tell her they were in the post and please dont give our date away. Plus it was so expensive to send 1 small envelope tracked delivery. Iam thinking we should just go to the court house. I will double check I am going to the correct court house before hand.

Thanks Carrie, Iam going to check the locations now on google earth to se where they are.

I'm a uk dftw bride to be and I am arranging our license via license to marry which was approx £90 But if you do that the documents have to be notarised which cost £95 and ten posted. I use staples to send it DHL for £30. Hope that helps.

In the state of Florida, you can get your marriage license from any county. That's why the mail-away service that Brevard County offers is so popular with couples having a destination wedding in Florida.

There's no need to get the license at least two days in advance. There is not a waiting period for marriage licenses unless you are a Florida resident.

OP, here's information from the Orange County clerk's office: http://www.myorangeclerk.com/enu/Pages/additional-services/marriage-licenses-and-ceremonies.aspx

^^ What she said! :teeth: You can go to any courthouse in Florida, and there's no waiting period once you have the license.

Thanks for your help girls.

We fly out on Thursday 26th and our wedding is Monday 30th, so Iam thinking we need to get the licence on Friday 27th, as the courthouses are closed at weekends.

Does anyone know how many documents need to be notorized? I am getting some quotes from UK notaries but they are charging per document.

Thanks

Thanks. One of the solicitors have told me that I need to get the form stamped with an Apostille. Is this correct? This website is what they are saying I need to do - https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised

I'm not sure whether to just wait and get it at the office. Would be nice to have it before we go though! Thanks to anyone with information! I really appreciate it!

I'm an Australian marrying a Brit...we are using License to wed LLC www.licensetowedllc.com and the service has been wonderful. We are being met at our resort to notarise the documents and then they will take them to the courthouse and bring back the documents.
Notary services in both the UK and Australia are FAR more expensive than in the USA as there are far less of them (about 10% of solicitors) so we made the decision to arrange it through one of the vendors recommended by Disney.
When my fiancé had to have something notarised to send to Disney a while ago it cost 100 pounds...and yes it's per document.

I can't take credit for this a friend wrote it who has been through the process (I went to the courthouse)

Marriage License by Mail

This should cost you $93.50 through Brevard County Court - no more than that - and they don't charge any extra for international postage.

You do not need to be in Florida for any length of time before getting married, and non US citizens are not eligable for the pre martial counselling discount.

You complete the form called Marriage License By Mail Merged. Submit it to the Court via email to the email address on the form.

You can do this at any point after deciding to get married in Florida. They will keep your form on file until 60 days before your intended wedding date. You don't need to prompt them they will send it to you. They will send you your actual marriage license, by email. It will contain information you have previously submitted on the Marriage License By Mail form, such as your name date of birth address etc and your husband to be's details.

THIS IS THE FORM YOU NEED TO GET NOTARISED!!

Print it out, then find yourself a notary. When I was doing mine I tried to get a solicitor at work to sign it but as they did not have a stamp or seal it was not eligable so we found a local notary. You can contact local solicitors and as long as they have a stamp or seal they can sign this for you.

I believe each notary can set their own charges, we paid £85 for ours. She was a lovely older lady with a small loft office that had a table and 3 chairs in it, nothing special! We chatted to her for about 5 minutes then we went through the form and what needed to be signed. She witnessed our signatures, then put her seal in two places on the form. We took our passports as identification. She took copies of everything, gave us a few business cards and said she was more than happy to verify the information over the phone if the court needed any further details.

I then went straight to the post office and popped it into a tracked envelope and sent it to the Court.

They confirmed receipt, and as I'd been talking to them via email I confirmed that when they got the paperwork that they were going to let me know, and arrange a time to call me, which I then made payment to them over the phone by credit card.

About a week later, our license arrived at our friends house in Florida!

On our wedding day, our officiant had witnesses sign our form, not mandetory but it was a nice thing to do, he then posted it back to the court after he had witnessed it and signed it. The completed license then beat us home, it was waiting on our doorstep when we got in!

Thank you very much for all your help. I've submitted the initial form to Brevard County.
