When does the dining room staff eat dinner?

I don't know why I'm so curious about this, but when do our servers eat their dinner?

Surely they're not cramming in a meal between first and second seating?....

I imagine they are scheduled for dinner either early (way before the main seating) or late (after second seating).

I was talking to our stateroom host and he told me that he eats at 10 PM most nights. And then when I was chatting with a couple of CM's in the shops (this would have been Thursday night) one of them mentioned that she heads to the Gym to work out with her hubby (also a CM) and the other one told me she took walks on the decks later in the evening after she ate.

She mentioned that if we ran out of food, the CM's would be happy to share their rice (this was the mechanical challenge cruise last week)
I feel pretty certain she was joking, she had a kind of dry sense of humor, like my hubby, but it sure made me stop and wonder.
What a crazy life they must have to get used to. I am not sure I could be away from home all those months and work so hard and be so committed. I think they are all pretty awesome.

The servers are working so hard all day. In the mornings they may be working in Cabanas or in one of the dining rooms and during lunch we even ran into our serving team serving the hamburgers at pete's or the shwarmas. They are such hard workers and work long hours. They deserve all the tip and more. So it would be interesting to know when they have time to ever eat during the day.

I think they do eat a lot of rice dishes. I read something one time about it.

We met a CM who was the daughter of our table-mates on our cruise in January. She told us they ate dinner after the passengers, and that the food, while good, was not anything like we got in the MDRs. She said the crew kitchen fixed dishes to appeal to all the various nationalities on board, so one night they might get Asian, another night European, etc, but that they always had vegetarian and lots of rice dishes. We'd talked to our servers on other cruises and they said much the same. What they described reminded me of my cruises in the Navy: work all day, eat when we could, and occasionally sleep for a few hours before doing it all over again for weeks on end.

I was thinking and wondering what their sleeping quarters are like? So much behind the scenes stuff to ponder!

They're certainly not sitting down to a 2 hour dinner service, that's for sure. We've found our servers up on deck either manning the buffets at special evening events (like the PiTC party) or serving ice-cream or drinks (when the "self-serve" function has been ceased for health & safety reasons) after second seating.

We really appreciate the CM's on board as they work long hours to ensure we have a "magical" vacation.

This is exactly what my cm friends (both servers) have advised me too. Their mess hall is quite different from the MDRs :)

@Sytrace Spot on with your assessment of what a crazy life the DCL CM's must live on board. Knowing this is why I tip above the DCL suggested amounts. They are awesome.

I had no idea they had a 24-hour mess hall! That must be a logistical nightmare.

Not really. I served on an aircraft carrier that averaged about 5500-6000 crew members. Our food services operated 24/7, serving at least 22,000 meals per day, all day, every day. I ran a 230 man division that helped the cooks prepare the food, served the food, and kept the eating areas clean, with about 150 men on duty at any given time.

I agree with what folks have said, and also the cast can eat in the signature restaurants if they have open reservations. They try to go to Palo or Remy on the 1st night of the cruise, as there are many open reservations....

I have no idea if Disney has anything like this, but on one Royal cruise we found out that the crew have their own bar. :)

We were having drinks with another couple, the couple was doing a back to back and was tipping the server at the bar we were at and asking if she was going to be there for their second cruise, and she said no, she was being moved to work at the crew bar. And then we talked a bit about that.

But they would have to be "off" in order to do that, right? Anyone know what their Max hours a day of work is and when they ever get a rest / or time off?

I worked in a hotel and there was a break room that had a hot entree and a salad bar available 24/7. Of course there was less food there for the overnight shift and it would change from breakfast to lunch/dinner food over the course of the day.
