My fellow studio people.....

Breakfast in the room.

We drive, so we can take whatever we want.

Normally, we take fresh baked banana or pumpkin bread. Then we grab a piece of fruit. That will hold us until lunch.

We fly....and it's been cheap. I'm at the point if I can't get round trip under $100 we don't go. Spirit airlines has had some great fares. However, spirits bag policies suck so we usually can cram all our clothes in a "free" personal bag. Do laundry halfway through the trip. I'm weighing the cost of an uber to pick up food or place in order with garden grocer.

I've seen and participated in many christmas tree exchanges.....what I'd love to see is like an appliance exchange. Like a crock pot and a small griddle or something. The kind of things you might keep in an owner's locker....but if it was a group thing through many people, why not just have it exchanged through the bell services?

Am I getting too cheap with that suggestion?

Why don't you get an Owners Locker and keep your own appliances in it? There are a lot of people who do that. Waffle irons, crock pots, Brita water pitchers (we do the individual bottles), quesadilla makers, electric hot plates etc. You could also store some clothes in it too since you're trying to fly on Spirit and not check bags. Keep all your Disney clothes there...

We stay in a studio for 13 nights every fall. We do 4 to 5 dinners in our studio and all breakfasts. We do not get a grocery order. We keep a small 8x8 electric fry pan in our Owners Locker. We have made salmon patties ( we bring a can of salmon with us) , tuna fish sandwiches, taco casserole (brown the ground beef at home and freeze it, pack it in the luggage and it was just fine, still frozen), we buy hot dogs at SSR and bring our own Mac and cheese and combine them for a meal. We have brought canned tamales too. Breakfast is scrambled eggs or fried eggs, some mornings maybe yogurt and toast. We bring our own cheese sticks for snacks as well as cheese for snacks with drinks at night. Luckily we fly Southwest! We have fun figuring out new meals, as we prefer studios so we can save points.

I've used the grills at the resorts and grilled out while staying at a studio. This may sound weird but you can use the iron to make grilled cheese sandwiches. You just need tin foil. Wrap the sammy in tin foil, butter first and then hit the iron on High. Toast for about 2 min each side - Voila- grilled cheese or grilled ham & cheese. It's a bit squished but it works.
I have hear of people doing spaghetti & meat balls mostly in the micro wave in a studio. Soup & toast, breakfast, and then just snacks and deli type meals.
Not sure if you'll have a car but Publix makes a good rotisserie chicken that can be used for dinner and then chicken salad for lunch the next day.
This is great, lol, remember when dad would put the steak on the engine top of the car and it would be ready by the end of the drive. LOL love the creative ways to McGiver food dishes. We should do a thread just on that.

July is just tooo hot to cook
use the outdoor grills to cook up some chicken and make enough to last a few meals.
When my sons and grand daughter come along I order (Garden Grocer)
fresh fruit
yogurt
water
juice
cheese
fresh veggies
salsa dip
veggie dip
Milk
meat if using the grills
frozen waffles or frozen pancakes

I pack
Fresh loaves of banana bread, bagels,(multi grain and cinnamon raisin), pita bread, dinner rolls,crackers,chips,pretzels,tostitos,1lb butter. Mini boxes of cereal, yeah the sugary kind I'd never buy at home.I bottle caesar dressing (plastic bottle). I also bring pkgs of hot chocolate and marshmallows. Microwave popcorn packs. Mini red baby potatoes.
One small pkg of tin foil.Mandarin fruit cups. Cans of tuna, salmon, ham. Miracle whip-mini jar.
Peanut butter,jam,honey.,,,single use packs.

I find breakfast is the cheapest meal of the day so often we eat breakfast outside of the studio,,plus everyone is trying to get ready for rope drop at our studio.

My next trip I am going solo and I have saved up starbucks money by exchanging my airmiles,,,so I have $380.00 is starbucks money to feed myself. It's a good thing I like Starbucks smoothies):

Just think about what your family eats at home and choose some things that you might be able to
prepare using a microwave oven and toaster.

Have fun planning
Hugs Mel

Ps
use empty Pringle/Lay potato chip containers to pack stuff in.

This last trip in November, we flew SW so in a carry on we had a small electric griddle and some cooking spoons and spatula, etc
we also took a couple of folding coolers. We also took some of those flour uncooked tortillas from Costco and we bought some carnitas and steak fajitas from this Mexican restaurant the day before or departure that we put in the freezer . The tortillas and the frozen food we put in the checked in luggage. We were able to make pancakes, grill cheese sandwiches, and either breakfast burritos with eggs and cheese or fajita burritos when we ate in the room.
We rented a car so we got the eggs, milk, oil, cereals, chips, beer and water from the store. We also made some fresh salsa using the canned petite tomatoes and the dry ingredients that has the rest of the ingredients for a salsa that they sell.

cheap is a relative term lol I did disney on a dime when my DSs were young and get it. Never traveled without a jar of peanut butter and bagels in our suitcase as DSs tended to decide they were 'starved' at the oddest times.

If anything, the cheap airfare you can snag and willingness to do the personal bag only (cannot imagine travelling that light btw - wow) lowers overall transportation costs...to the point where you could justify taking uber over to crossroads to snag some groceries.

We always manage to find a rental car reasonably priced. This allows us to eat most of our big meals of the day offsite. A savings that tends to offset a large portion of the rental car costs, along with picking up cases of water & breakfast/snack item.

i'm of the school of thought now tht i'm on vacation = no cooking, especially in a studio.

Honestly my wife was shocked as to how much I can cram into a tiny bag. I found a blog years ago about the different bags you can buy that fit Spirit's personal bag policy and found one from REI (it's since been discontinued) that is almost EXACTLY 16x14x12. We can actually fit 5 days worth of cloths (warm weather clothes) in 3 of them and have been able to keep the 4th one empty for souvenirs home. Our original DVC plan was 2 trips every 3 years. Finding these ultra cheap flights on Spirit (an airline I NEVER thought I would EVER use prior) has allowed us to take 2 and even 3 trips a year. We will have to take next year off as we've are our of points through May 2018 after we are done this year. Will need to wait or will be in perpetual borrow mode. My kids are only 10 and 6 so as they grow so will their bag space....but our next flight in July was $90 round trip per person. Considering the owners locker since my neighbor is DVC. If we both share it (crock pot, griddel, sandwich maker) we can both make meals and save $. No need for 2 lockers when we both will use it for the same stuff.

smart planning! I've had dismal luck w/spirit as to long delays & canceled flights all around us when at the gate:(. we only have 1 flight out a day to MCO. Makes me nervous to book them when I absolutely have to be somewhere, ala a cruise. Has your experience been better?

Yeah it has. We've flown them probably 5 or 6 times. Been delayed once prior to last month and that was only an hour. January flight down was delayed 1. 5 hours and flight home 2 hours as both days had horrendous storms in the city where the plane originated. Not much you can do about weather delays.... But we've had good luck with them.

We have a 13 night trip booked in June at a studio. I was thinking of taking along my electric skillet. We'll have a car so groceries are not a problem. I know studios are not set up to cook in but has anyone else used an electric skillet and how did it work out? I don't want to end up setting off a smoke alarm or having to pay a cleaning fee due to food smell, but this would really help out with our food budget... Thanks

^ Good Question. Been discussing the owners locker with my neighbor and yeah, I don't want the room stink of smoke if we cook bacon on it. Pancakes would be fine. But the 1br/2br do have a vent fan over the stoves.

There really isn't much counter space for extra cooking things in a studio. However, we have found that we do just fine with toaster and microwave. Egg sandwiches are a huge favorite and easy to do Bread, egg, cheese, pre-cooked bacon). I make a lot of kale salads (too much counter service food...need vegetables). Vegetable and dip (humus, ranch) rotisserie chicken is a great idea and can create many different meals - with rice from a pouch, or veggies, put on a salad or made into chicken salad (save up some single serve mayo and mustard packets). Tuna also comes in a pouch - we bring that to the parks with crackers for lunch but just as good for dinner. 'Nosh' dinner - crackers or baguette(pick one up in France) with chicken, cheese, hard salami and sliced fruit or veggies. There are also pouches of Mexican spiced rice, so rice and beans (canned) with cheese and tortillas or just plain...
We accept the fact that it is not a full kitchen, so no spaghetti and meatballs or poached salmon...but we love the simple things and they sure taste great after all the (great) processed food at restaurants.
-these ideas assume you go to a store or order green grocer - some is shelf stable and pack-able or ship-able)

I personally only ever bake my "real bacon" in the oven these days. (I despise frying anything.) But you can easily heat up the pre-cooked microwavable bacon in the studios. It's perfect for a quick breakfast or BLT's.

(PS) The Owners Locker is a real lifesaver. LOVE that thing!! Helps so much with packing...
