Been away from the DIS for a while - wanting to try Universal/Cabana Bay

I've been off the board for a couple years, we've been taking the kids on cruise the past few summers and I want to go back to WDW, but the kids don't want to. We've been to WDW at every level of resort, and I'm just don't know where to start. I have to say, I'm intrigued with Cabana Bay and have had my eye on it since it was still a concept. I LOVE old Miami Beach - I'm thinking this is a "value" resort. Please don't take this wrong, but I'm getting up there now (51) LOL and my tolerance for something like Pop Century has dwindled, would those two resorts be a fair comparison? I don't mind outside hallways, (I love the nostalgia associated with them, and I am not (by any means) as Deluxe snob (but who doesn't love GF CL. LOL)

It would be a short 3 night pop in - not a major vacation, just was wondering you all's thoughts on Cabana Bay.

People who have stayed at CB have mostly commented how it is much better than Disney values are.

It's getting consistently good reviews on here from folks that have stayed there.........I haven't stayed there so can't comment on it but I don't think you would be disappointed staying there at all.

Thanks schumigirl, your post gave me the incentive to wade through the Universal section on these boards. Ugh....I hate being a newbie again. When I tell you I know NOTHING about Universal I am soooo not exaggerating. Off I go. Wish me luck. :)

You'll do fine.......:thumbsup2

There is a wealth of information on here and some very helpful people for the things you maybe can't find information about.........:goodvibes

In terms of comparison, Cabana bay leaves Pop Century in the dust. There are so much activities Ie the Lazy River and the Bowling alley. There are some wonderful lounges. Also two really nice large pools. I also think that the food court is much better especially when you compare it to the value food courts at Disney.

As a previous poster noted there is no express pass. However you do get early entry to Harry Potter so there is that.

Just realize it has no express pass if that is important to you.

It is a little important to us. We are NOT and never had been park people, we usually do a park every other day, if that. I"m thinking that I can buy this express pass - the room is extremely reasonable, and we are probably only doing 1 park, so it makes sense to buy one. Our trip is flying in to FLL for 5 nights at Margaritaville in Hollywood, a couple nights in Delray Beach, a few nights at Universal and flying out of MCO.

Hey say Hello to Delray from. It was my hometown.

We just stayed at Cabana for 4 nights and doubled up at Royal Pacific for 1 of the nights to get two days of express passes. It was more economical to do it that way for 4 people. We have stayed at Pop and CBR and Cabana is like a cross between the two, with styling like Pop but room sizes and amenities closer to CBR. The beds are super comfy queens (last time at CBR just doubles). We stayed in Americana, pool view, inside hallways. I liked the layout of the rooms better than Pop and CBR with the bathroom immediately as you walk in and the sink area separated by a wall from the sleeping area. Cabana is totally kid friendly with great pools. The negative is the food court, not very good. The coffee was horrible, though there is a Starbucks if you want to pay premium. I think the Disney value/moderate resorts do a better job with the food. On the other hand, RPR, had lots of great food choices and the rooms were fabulous. Being the same "age" I enjoyed the one night there much more and so did both of my teens. It was also much easier to get back and forth from the parks by boat from RPR compared to the buses at Cabana.

As someone who has only stayed at Pop, Cabana Bay really is much better. Better pools, better rooms, better layout. The food court is the only thing that is just about even food wise, but I feel CBay has a bit more room in theirs (though mainly just the seating area). Plus the bus to the parks just leaps and bounds better. The two trips I've stayed, I've never once had to wait for a bus. Ever. (but to be fair, they were both somewhat slower times).

We've stayed twice 10 nights and 7 nights and hopefully back in May this year.

My two trip reports with lots of resort info and photos are in the universal trip reports section.

We prefer the tower rooms with indoor corridors. It is miles better than a Disney value imo (stayed art animation little mermaid and all star movies x2)

I dislike PopC (prefer the All Stars). Cabana Bay is nothing like a Value resort at Disney. I would stay there again in a skinny minute. There wasn't one thing that I disliked about it .....well, maybe that we had a room two rooms from the end of the Continental building making for a very long walk to the main areas.

I can't find your trip reports. :(

Thanks for those links, I'm deciding on which uni hotel to plump for and your TR's will be helpful! :)

As a side note, total deja vu with the village inn section, we stayed next to there at the hawthorne suites westwood blvd in 03/06/09 and loved it, great pie, cheap and a menu that suited even my ultra picky tastes! What a blast from the past those pics were. Thanks for the links :)
