Didnt see anyone post they they had recived their new memebers card yet..
Mine arrived yesterday 2/6/15..

While is looks simlar to old one we received in 2013, a exp. Date of 12-31- 2021 was added..
(DH hates the matalic/shinny mickey head)

So this brought up a few questions..
Will all cards will expire on that date? Or if it will be 6 years from the date your join?
Example if my sister buys into DVC in 2018 will her card expire on the same date or will it says 12-31-2023..

Say you lose you card does the exp. Reset?

Also there is still no charge for replace card if lost right?

Disney has not said much about the expiration date except that the cards have one. i believe the ones being issued now will have the same expiration date (others have reported that 2021 date on cards that they just received).. Beyond that is an unknown although I suspect cards issued to future new members will likely have the same date, at least for a while. Disney has said nothing about changing the no-charge process for replacing a lost or cracked card and I doubt that will change.

I wonder if the expiration date is so that if one sells their contract and is no longer a DVC member, they will not have a card for discounts, etc. beyond this date. In 2021 (or whatever the date is), they will issue new ones to all owners.

A waste of dues money if you ask me. Another DVC change with no information provided.

I believe their "justification" was that people who have resold their stakes still have the cards and are using them for the discounts. Now does that justify spending who knows how much on new cards every few years...No.

So they set a date of 2021? What if I sell tomorrow and keep using the card until 2021, doesn't make any sense but there are many things with DVC that makes me scratch my head.

If I had to guess. I would say these cards probably have a magnetic stripe and or an RFID chip. The expiration date has more to do with the lifespan of the card than the expiration of the advantages. It is more to indicate by which date you will be issued a new one. The advantage for DVC is that these cards can be validated like a credit card. If you sell your contract, your card gets deactivated the minute they activate the card of the new buyer.

If they've put an RFID, it is embedded in the plastic and is invisible unless you break the card apart. It can be read the same way they read your magic band when making a paiement

If you are right I guess we will find out when people start using the new cards-previously to get your discount at stores you just showed them the card and your drivers license-if they take it to touch it to a reader now then we will know

My guess is that DVC is way too small for Disney to spend a dime on tracking the validity of a members status with mag strip or RFID accessed data base entries. If that was worth it to them, they could flag your MDE account and you could use your MB for member proof.

There is no reason to RFID or magnetic stripe these. Much less expensive to just print cards every few years. Requires no technology, no tech support, no readers AND very low cost. IMO there is no big underground market for old cards. Yes old members can get discounts they are not entitled too but the new cards address this. Is there 1% of total membership that will sell their DVC and then use the discount sure, now it is fixed.

If they did spend the money on RFID etc, there would be plenty of people complaining about the costs and waste of money. IMO this whole thing is a non-issue. Besides some the same people worried about people getting discounts "illegally" are the same ones complaining that the discounts and benefits are not worth anything.

They did enter my card number in the register before giving me a discount at Saratoga Spring in January before giving me a discount on my purchases. That is why I am half expecting the new cards to have some form of quick validation chip. For those complaining of the cost. The RIFD cards only cost a few pennies more than non RFID ones
