Beautiful but noisy bungalows

We had enough DVC points to stay in a Bungalow 1/27/16-1/31/16. This was our first stay ever at the Polynesian, so we wee looking forward to it. I was also somewhat leery after reading some of the reviews about the noise. This was hands down the most points we have used for a stay and we have stayed in grand villas at BW, AKV and BLT.

First the positives. The cast members were wonderful. Everyone was cheerful, helping and seemed to genuinely care about you enjoying your stay. The lobby has been redone, which I didn't find troublesome. I do remember there being more trees and water in the lobby, but it was still very nice. The dole whip shop just outside the lobby is very convenient.

The bungalow itself is beautiful. It is a decent walk from the lobby, and we were in number 8, but we expect to do a fair amount of walking when we visit Disney, The bungalow has a master bedroom with a king bed and an attached bathroom, a second bedroom with a queen bed and a "fold down" twin bed, and a comfortable couch which pulls out to a bed. The lighting has very modern "switches" on the walls which control different areas on one switch, and you can change the light intensity as well. The kitchen is large, as is the dining table. The is a huge deck surrounding the back half of the bungalow which has the small pool, table with 4 chairs, 2 "lawn chairs" with padding, and 2 hanging chairs. The TVs in each room are HUGE with beautiful pictures. The view is gorgeous including the Grand Floridian, Contemporary and Magic Kingdom. You can watch "Wishes" every night and listen to the music from the speakers on the balcony. You can also watch the Electric parade each evening, as it floats past the bungalows. This is truly a beautiful bungalow with great theming and a fantastic view.

Unfortunately, there are negatives. The negatives are not those which can be seen, but heard. The bungalows are right next to the Ticket and Transportation Center, from which large river boats come and go a few times an hour. These boats run from very early in the morning, to the wee hours at night. Each time a boat comes or goes, it blows its horn multiple times. Initially, this was quaint. The more times it occurred, the more annoying it became. It was especially bad first thing in the morning and late at night. I brought ear plugs and requested a bungalow at a distance from the TTC, but to no avail. This was still very disturbing. The other loud noise has something to do with the plumbing system. Every now and then, there's a loud whooshing sound followed by a slam. The best thing that I can compare it to is if the sliding door was being slammed as hard as possible. This scared the crap out of us because it just happens out of the blue.

I know that these noise complaints sound petty, but they start to wear on you after a short period of time. I was actually looking forward to leaving so I wouldn't have to hear those darn horns blowing anymore! In my opinion, it greatly reduces the value of the bungalow, I would much rather stay in a BLT grand villa with an almost equivalent view, for a significant less number of points. I really wish I could upload the video with sound of the horns.

A few less important negatives were: one serving for coffee.... they charge $3 for each additional one so bring your own!, towels not made into figures, the attached pool isn't a whirlpool.

No surprises with the noise. I think anyone who is concerned with boat noise (it's a valid concern) needs to avoid the Poly Bungalows as well as some studios. We have stayed Lake View Studio almost at TTC and while you definitely hear the boats we enjoy it. We were there for a week. I recall someone talking about the plumbing when they first opened, I don't recall if it had to do with a holding tank or the pool but I can imagine that being a bit disturbing. The coffee pricing is the same at all WDW DVC locations. The reasoning for the lack of towel figures has been discussed a number of times on this site.

With all that said I still would be happy to stay there if I could afford the points!... Maybe in March they will give me a Bungalow instead of a studio by accident:rolleyes1

Just got back on Saturday night and had lake view Studio at Poly. Maybe I saw you walk by. I was concerned about the noise when we got there but it didn't seem to bother us. I was surprised how close it was to the TTC. It was actually closer to walk there than to the monorail stop at the resort. I would assume it is louder being right on the water in direct line with the boats.

I hear you about the noise. I have friends who booked a lake view studio for a week. They complained about the boats honking late at night and SO early in the morning. They invited me over for a night and I can tell you that after only one night/morning listening to them, I concur! It is what it is, but it can get seriously annoying. And the maintenance on the sand every morning! The next time they stayed at the Poly (and for all future times) they requested a standard and it was much, much quieter. I know it doesn't bother some people, but I'm a light sleeper. People just need to know ahead of time. :)

So I've been super curious about the pool. It's not heated right? Did you use it at all? I just can't seem to find the attraction in a tiny not heated pool. Was wondering if you actually used it and found it amazing.

The pool is heated.

As to the noise has anyone stayed in a bungalow and found the noise from the ferries to be more than when you stayed at the Polynesian and were in a longhouse in the same area? I guess I am just wondering are they louder on the water or is just that people are staying there that haven't stayed at the Polynesian before to hear them.

Most of the time we were there, the high temps were in the 60s and the lows in the 40s. I put my hand in the water, and it just wasn't warm enough to go in. The day we left, it was in the mid 70s and I think it would have been great.

It is called a "plunge pool", meant to dunk in and cool off, not swim in like a regular pool, or lounge and unwind like a jacuzzi.
Ii is "eye candy", another neat feature to brag or get excited about. Like the TV in the bathroom mirror, that most people don't know how to work.
(Do you really want to watch TV in the bathroom while you are at WDW?)
But a true jacuzzi on the bungalow decks would be really cool. (The popular "infinity pools" at some resorts don't do a thing for me.)

From Disney website:
"Stretch out on comfortable lounge furniture on a back deck that runs the length of the Bungalow, and cool off with a dip in your private plunge pool. A separate private seating area features hanging chairs. Each Bungalow also includes . . . ."

We have stayed at the Bungalows twice. Each time, we stay in units 1-8 (on the west portion furthest from the TTC). The noise from the big ferry is less in in those units rather than units 14-20. The smaller boats didn't bother us at all. The plumbing noise was annoying. I wrote and spoke to DVC about this and hopefully, they can do something about it. The reason the noise occurs is that all drains in the Bungalows go to a holding tank. When the tank gets full, the contents are vacuumed out to a lift station on land. The tank is used much less at night since people are sleeping.

The plunge pool is nice and refreshing in the summer months but too cold for most of us in the winter months
