Shopping at Publix?

Publix is new to our area, and I'm going to head there this weekend to check it out for the first time. Please tell me how to save at Publix. It doesn't look like I need any loyalty card there. Do they double coupons? Are the BOGO deals 1/2 price if you only buy one item? We have been shopping at Walmart for the last year, because our town only has one other grocery store, a Bi-Lo, which is just ok. But, I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the lines at Walmart, no matter what time I go there. They are consistently out of stuff I need, and it's a hassle every time I go there. So, I'm going to see if it's worth the 15 minute drive to the next town to shop at Publix & avoid the aggravation each week. I know I'll likely still have to hit Walmart once or twice a month for paper goods & toiletries. But the weekly trip is causing more gray hairs than it's worth!

I almost exclusively shop at Publix. Mostly because its the closest to my house, but it's always clean and everyone is really friendly. I think it can be a slightly more expensive than WalMart, but it's worth it to me. I think doubling coupons is a regional thing - we do not have that in NE FL. I also think that their BoGos are regional. Mine charges full price for the first, and the second is free. I have heard of some stores that half each item though.

In Georgia, the BOGOs do not require you to purchase both items. So in reality, they are half off. I love my Publix too! I still shop at Walmart, but there are many items I can get cheaper at Publix w/ coupons, and I buy almost all of my produce there.

This website makes it very easy to shop at Pulix

www.iheartpublix.com

They do all the couponing for you! Publix also has different clubs (baby, pet owners) where you can sign up and get extra coupons.

I love Publix. BOGOs every week and great customer service. I'll second using the iheartpublix website - makes it SO easy! Digital Q's on Publix own website are nice too. Oh, and the gas card deals are good - about once or twice a month they offer a $50 gas card for $40 when you spend $50 on groceries - easy to do, and even with gas cheaper now, it saves us $10-$20 a month on gas, so yay Publix!

I got SO fed up with Walmart for the same reasons you mentioned (and other reasons too) that I rarely go there anymore.

Not at the FL stores but I believe in other states they have a weekly penny deal. Also in FL it is a true BOGO. You can't buy one item for 1/2 the cost

Thank you for all of the replies!! We went to Publix around 6 pm. Not the best idea on the Saturday before Super Bowl....and, we're in NC/SC, so it's an even bigger deal for Super Bowl weekend here....GO Panthers!

Anyway, I agree that the customer service was phenomenal. The store manager even opened another checkout & cashed us out himself. We did pretty well, with $140 spent & we even picked up a few "extras" (ice cream, shrimp for the game, and trash bags) that were on sale for good prices. I figured out the digital coupons, and had to pick up an in-store flyer for a couple of store coupons. I think we'll try to go regularly for a few weeks & see how it goes. Another bonus is that the store is just across the state line into SC, and the gas prices by the store were $1.55 vs $1.73 by our house. So, it's likely going to be worth the 15 minute drive to do most of our shopping there.

Glad to find this thread! This past summer, they announced a new Publix being built, literally steps from our house. I could walk there, but luckily, it's just far enough that I won't get any traffic on our road. I'm excited because I've shopped Publix on Florida trips in the past, and I haven't been thrilled with the grocery store selection here in town--like the OP, I've been going mostly to Walmart. Luckily, our Walmart is decent, but I'm really looking forward to the Publix. I have to wait until October, though.

Same here but the new one that will be a few miles from my house won't open for two years. It will be the first Publix in Virginia. I'm generally underwhelmed by Publix when I visit my parents in SW Florida (prices seem very high compared to what I'm used to) but more competition is good for the consumer and I guess I'll figure out how to save there.

I  Publix

Depending on where you live is how BOGO's are handled, as well as coupons. Publix has digital coupons so sign up, and clubs Baby, Pet clubs. Also at the front of all Publix stores are normally 2 coupon flyers that are not in the main Publix Ad, I have seen even some Publix coloring pages for the kiddos, In the deli, they will let you try and item before you buy it which is good, deli meat and cheese are not cheap, and slice to your taste. They will break open package in produce and meat departments, just ask and also will help you with questions. Publix Customer Service is wonderful, its everyone's job there to take care of the customer. Publix store brands are as good as the name brands so do give them a try. On the BOGO's I think that they offer a more diverse variety of items, such as some produce, dairy products, meat, and frozen food, as well as some meat, not just the typical can goods, and breakfast options. Also on the Publix web site you can create a shopping list and it will sort it by aisle for you which is one of my favorite things, so I don't miss anything on my list.:thumbsup2 Once you start shopping there you will be hooked.... :cheer2::cheer2:

I think it is in or will be in 7 states. Last week they announced they were coming to Richmond, VA which is already extremely over served by grocery chains.

Truth!! We live west of Richmond, and there are an insane number of grocery stores and upscale ones too. We're getting a Wegman's soon, and then Publix. I'm stoked about Publix because I always shop there when we go to Florida. Their produce is really good.

I love Publix! We have one so close we can (and do sometimes) walk to.

BOGO is amazing, specially when you have a coupon on top of that. Their cakes are DELICIOUS. I ordered DH a birthday cake last year and they charged me .50 a slice and everyone raves about it.

Their house brand ice cream (in the black container) is sooo good and cheaper then the other brands. I also like getting fresh flowers there.

As other people have said, their customer service is top notch. Everyone is so friendly and I love how they walk your cart with you to your car.

I would LOVE to get a Wegman's. I grew up in Buffalo & every time I go home for a visit, we stop by Wegman's and I have serious grocery store envy!

The Publix bakery is very good! Their fried chicken is very good too.

BOGO's are great and tend to repeat frequently.

Call me ignorant but I thought publix was a sunshine state store, and I have not seen one outside of Florida

Publix's are in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, right now and I believe they have eyes on Kentucky next.

Publix's started in Winter Haven Florida, by George Jenkins, some time in the very early 1930's, he owned 2 stores there, but closed them to open his dream store in early 1940 in Lakeland Florida, which is where today their corporate office are still located. You probably wonder how I know this, I am from Lakeland originally, when I was a little girl in the early 60's my Dad worked for Publix in the warehouse, and when I was a teenager I worked as a cashier at Publix, most of my classmates worked at Publix, and some/most still do to this day. My DD went to George Jenkins high School, so you can see Lakeland and Publix are interlinked.
