Niagara Falls, Ontario

The Rainbow Bridge between Canada and the US is very pedestrian friendly. You can take pictures of falls and the international border line. http://www.niagarafallslive.com/rainbow_bridge.htm

ETA-Be sure to bring your passports.
Although this website says it's $.50 each way, when we last walked it in Sept 2015, it was only $.50 when leaving Canada- so $.50 round trip.

We are also planning a trip to the Falls and other NY locations at the end of August and really appreciate all the info here. Does anyone have experience with bringing a travel trailer into Canada? Loved one of the campgrounds we saw near the falls but not sure it is worth the hassle of going across & coming back.

A few years ago, we took our travel trailer and made a loop around Lake Erie starting West from NE Ohio and ending in Niagara Falls. It was an awesome trip!

Started out staying at East Harbor State park for 2 nights, Stayed at The Pinery up on Lake Huron for 2 nights (prettiest campground I've ever stayed at), then stayed at the KOA at Niagara Falls for 3 nights. My daughters still talk about that KOA and how much they enjoyed it, lol.

The only catch we ran into was that they did make us pull over at customs and open our trailer's door, but it was no big deal.

Been to NF many times. Like many, we ( me, kids now 13 and 17) love walking across the bridge to the states side. We have done both the Canadian and the US parks pass. We liked the US one better. The boat ride on the Us side is the same except at the end of the US one you get to climb up the side of the falls which is cool. Also cave of wind is way better than journey behind the falls.
The Clifton hill pass is lots of fun. Buy it on line for the extra Ferris wheel ride. We did it once in the day and once at night. We bought Wego bus pass.
Food is so expensive near the falls, but as someone said there is a cheap, good Italian place near the rim of the falls. Another great restaurant is the Syndicate. You can get there by WEgo. Groupon, wag jag, travelzoo and living social often have great deals. Ontario schools are not out until June 30.

For Toronto, I like to drive to Burlington or Oakville, and take the Go train in. Parking is free and you will end up at Union Station. You can also take go transit from Niagara but it is quite a long trip. The QeW / gardener can at times be stop and go and parking downtown is a pain.

Yes! The Capital One Quicksilver. I heard all Capital One cards have no foreign transaction feature. Chase also does not charge foreign transaction fees.

I got this card a few years ago because I was going to CA. I love that you get 1.5% back and it is so easy to redeem. It is my primary CC now.

I bank with Wells Fargo and in select locations in NYC they have foreign currency on hand. It is limited but they have told me if I give them time they will order in from other locations. The last time I waited too long but they called another location a few blocks away and had them put what they had in CA currency on hold for me. We used our card most of the time so the $200 or so CAD I got tied us over for small incidentals for our 5 days in Ottawa.

Marineland is even worse than SeaWorld, very spotty record for animals. I boycotted it this summer too based on what I read on intraweb and Blackfish documentry.

Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Perfect timing in discovering this thread! We are thinking of Niagra Falls and Toronto for a short trip in mid-August. We are planning to stay on Canada side, but thought about staying in St. Catharines. Thoughts? We were going to do the actual falls for one day and then head to Toronto for two days.

Any suggestions are welcome! We have two daughters -- 10 and 6. We would like to stay affordable on hotels (this is the Budget board!) since we will do WDW in June and the beach in July. We were looking at the Holiday Inn, Downtown Centre in Toronto and the Four Points By Sheraton or Holiday Inn in St. Catharines.

Thoughts??

Holiday Inn downtown Toronto ( on Carleton) while not in a terrible neighbourhood, isn't in the best one either. You are not too far from the Eaton Centre but a ways away from CN Tower, islands, waterfront. You are close to a subway station. Now I've never stayed there but walk past it all the time. I feel your parking might be quite high there too. I like Sheraton City centre and the Delta. I can normally find the Delta on Priceline for a decent price ( paid $100 USD last summer)

Not sure if I'd stay in st Catherine's, you'd have a long trip in, have to pay parking and nowhere to rest when you get tired ( Clifton hill can literally kill you). I found a decent price at the Marriott overlooking the falls last summer. There are usually lots of good deals in living social, travelzoo, groupon closer to the time.

That is so helpful! This is the reason these boards are so amazing! :) Do most of the hotels in Niagra have shuttles to the falls or do you walk?

OK, I booked a hotel in Niagara (Canadian side). That was a great recommendation. Now I need more good, affordable recs for Toronto! We would like to walk, take public transportation as much as we can. We will obviously have our car.

We are now debating day days in Niagara and then 1-2 days in Niagara on the Lake and St. Catharines. Thoughts? I don't want to feel rushed in NF.

I would directly ask some of the people in this thread including buffalogirl , vacation junkie and hockey.

I would take the GO train from Burlington into Toronto. One day at the most is enough for Niagara On The Lake unless you are doing a wine tour. If you have a car a beautiful drive is along the Niagara river south from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie. Just before you get into Fort Erie there are numerous local restaurants with real local people and local prices. We stayed at the Double tree Hotel in Niagara Falls Canada on Jan 1 2016 and watched the fireworks from our room. We were on the 16th floor, there are no hotels in front of the Doubletree so it is a great view and worth the money. The fireworks are displayed over the American Falls not the Canadian falls. We did the Journey behind the falls and the sky wheel ---well worth the funds and also the Buttery Conservatory. Just to let you know there is Municipal Parking beside the Bird Kingdom it is $2.50 for one hour, we then walked to the Falls instead of paying $18 for parking.

What are your plans in Toronto, (please don't say the Ripley Aquarium)

Most of the falls view area or Clifton hill area hotels are walkable but that hill will kill you by the end of the day. We found the Wego very handy we would get off at the top of Clifton hill walk down the hill then get the bus at the bottom.
Parking at the fallsview casino is very cheap. I paid $5 for all three days that I stayed ( you only pay when you leave. If you have a players card and do a bit of gambling it is free)
