One Time Use Points Question

For the first time in forever, I have actually been able to bank points. OK, 5, but still!!

While I'm in a points surplus now, plans down the road will have us back to borrowing. My question is whether or not DVC will let me purchase One Time Use Points for a reservation that could be fully covered by points in that reservation's use year.

My concern is that given how Disney is famous for always tinkering with policies and prices, they won't be available down the road when I would need them or would be more expensive. The future plans are pretty firm, so I see it as only a difference between spending a known $$$ amount now and possible spending more $$$ down the road.

I'm looking out over 2-3 years.

Thoughts?

OTUP are a current offer. They may or may not be available to use when it comes time to book your trip later on.
IMHO, DVC is having trouble booking through CRO their 2% ownership in each resort or else they would not be offering the OTUPs.

Dirk, I'm surprised to see you post on the DIS since I rarely see you outside of that other forum.

Yes, you should be able to do that. If they refuse, then hang up, book a "placeholder" reservation" that uses your current use year points and call back to book the reservation you really want. Then cancel the "placeholder". You shouldn't have to do that, though. I'd ask for a Supervisor first.

Since you are looking 2- 3 years out and are willing to spend $15 per point, wouldn't it be easier (and less expensive) to just keep an eye out for someone to transfer you the points you anticipate needing?

FWIW, I'd go ahead and borrow now if I needed a reservation and then look for a transfer "at my leisure" .

Another option to look at is paying cash for a night or two of your reservation. I've done that in the past when I was short points. Back then (over 10 years ago), an OKW 1 bedroom was 48 points for a weekend night and I got it with the member discount for around $400. With the member discount, it was linked as one reservation.

Thanks, everybody, for the advice. Cash might be a possibility if there are AP discounts, or even the DVC discount. I'll have to pay attention to the rack rate when I consider the booking. We would be talking about Studios.

When they were first offered, you were expected to use up current UY points before they allowed you to buy OTU. Now I am hearing something different and that people have been allowed to buy them at the 7 month mark. But, as mentioned, you can always book something as a tentative reservation that you will cancel after you book and purchase the points. Just be sure that tentative one is booked for more than 31 days out so that you won't end up with holding points when you do cancel it.

I have done this myself...not for OTU...but to put borrowed points into a reservation I know will happen and current UY points into one that might not.

Thanks for the tips. It's really strange having extra point and strategizing how to best use them. I'm more of an expert at how to make the most of the little I had left. Ten years of ownership and this is a first!
