Do you care what your luggage looks like?

We have suitcases that now are "too big" to fly. We got them for our honeymoon in 2002, and by 2006 airlines had limited size. Those only got used for road trips. I liked them for flying because they were green. Now we use a mismatch of whatever we have. Some were gifts. One of our duffle bags was DH's in high school for summer camp. One of our small rolling duffles is held together inside with duct tape. I have bought one suitcase in the past 13 years because it was on super discount clearance at Walmart.

I'd love nice, new matching luggage, but what we have is functional. I may stencil something fun on some of the older black pieces, just to make it a bit more distinctive. Anyone know where I can get a big Hogwarts crest stencil?? :)

We used the same ugly luggage that we got as a wedding gift in 1985 until our trip to WDW in 2015, so 30 years! I bought new stuff and got exactly what I wanted for that trip! I went with Heys hardsided, my husbands is plain blue, mine is bright and fun and I love it!

As kids, we never traveled other than camping trips 1.5 hours from home so we never had real luggage. And, as a married couple for 20+ years, DH and I have never purchased a matching set of luggage for travel either. All of our luggage is a hodgepodge of pieces either given to us by family who bought new for themselves, or random pieces we've found at a great discount from our local outlets and department stores. Don't care if it's "pretty" - just needs to be functional.

Do you mind telling me what you bought? DD is a diver and just spent a semester abroad in Bermuda. What a PITA to pack her dive gear along with enough stuff to live for 3+ months! To add insult to injury, we had bought her a new piece of luggage for a trip abroad she took in 2014. I thought it was too big (because when it was fully loaded it was well over 50 lb), but we didn't return it. She used it as her primary case to take to Bermuda and it came home with a front wheel totally ripped off. So she used it on exactly TWO trips (one to Europe and one to Bermuda) and it is now trashed. Super frustrating! And the second bag we had sent along to Bermuda was already really worn, but it too now has one wheel ready to fall off.

And I went to visit her in Bermuda and MY suitcase ended up with a big tear in it when we got there! I had to tape it up for the trip home! So we now have three relatively useless suitcases in our house. I may leave them in the attic to store linens and such because I HATE to put so much into the landfill!

But now we need to buy more luggage (especially for DD) and I don't want to throw good money after bad! HELP!...............P

Right now we are using some sort of light weight nylon bags we found at Homegoods. We can fit both our wetsuits, both BCs, fins, and lights without batteries in one big bag. We carry on our camera equipment (DH does underwater video I do stills) and our regulators. We pack both our clothes in another suitcase like the one that holds our gear. We actually took one of the little portable hand held scales to the stores and weighed every bag and got the lightest one we could find. I'm sure the big piece that holds the equipment won't last past one more trip. When we are driving we use a dufell and usually end up throwing the wet suits in the back of the pick up trunk on the way home.

Ok so where are all of you people when I am in the airport?! Because I swear it seemed like everyone but me had nice new luggage when I was dragging around our old broken down stuff.:rotfl2:

That's what I was thinking last trip. Actually, it's partly why I started this thread! :P

Anyone know where I can get a big Hogwarts crest stencil?? :)

best bet it to cut your own with parchment or thin plastic sheeting. you can find free one to use as patterns online. there's a seller on etsy who has one with the hogwarts crest but i'm not sure it's big enough. if you do stencil something, use a layer of kilz first.

Fly? What are we? The Vanderbilts??? Our broken/mismatched luggage goes in the car & we DRIVE to our destinations ;)

I have a matching set - but it's 25 years old. Still looks pretty good. It's a light olive and stands out on the conveyor belts. It's made by Pathfinder and I just purchased my son a rolling duffle - doesn't exactly match - but compliments the other pieces. LOL

Do you buy new luggage even though the old still works? We have some luggage that we've had for several years now. It's scuffed up and looks kind of worn. (I clean it up after every trip.) But it still rolls fine and the zippers all work and there are no holes in it. We usually fly at least once a year. I've been debating on buying new but I'm cheap. I hate to buy new just to have it trashed by airlines.
Only that It is in working order and no holes.

I have an Atlantic that I bought over 10 years ago before a cruise, I bought bright blue so it would stand out..... and so did everyone else. The bag has held up really well, so two years ago I bought DH one in a weird sage color since his bag had broken zippers and the wire inside one of the corners was worn through the material and created a hole in the bag. It was only a matter of time until that thing came into baggage claim in pieces. Fast forward to this fall and he decided to take my bag to Israel for work because why take the newer bag when it may get damaged. My bag survived the trip well. A month later we go to FL and one of the plastic rests on the bottom of DHs newer bag get sheared off on the flight on the way down. Turns our they are a different style on the new bag. Our old bag has tapered sides (trapezoids), the new bag has square ones. My point is it isn't always the expensive materials, its the design that matters. I never buy spinner because the wheels stick out (as much as I would love to have a bag that turns so well) and now I know to check out other items such as foot pegs. And to think, on my first cross country flight, I was still using one of my moms old hardside american touristers that you had to *gasp* carry.
And no, I don't care what my luggage looks like. I do wish it had a cute print or something when I see the pretty ones. But then I see the grease marks on my old bag and think soooo not worth it.

I only buy new when I absolutely have to because mine has stopped functioning and I can't track down something decent used. I killed a zipper on my favorite piece of luggage because of salt water (I'm a scuba diver and the wet gear took it's toll) but it was replaced with a hand me down from my brother, who had just bought a new suitcase. He traveled a lot more than me at the time and wanted something hard sided and with multi-directional wheels, so I happily took his soft-sided, one-direction wheeled suitcase and claimed it as my own. 8 or so years later, I still use it on every trip, with a big ol' pink ribbon tied to the handle to identify it on the carousel.

I had a hot pink suitcase that finally broke after our Bermuda cruise. It had been through a lot of abuse. It literally fell apart in the Tampa airport on the way to the economy parking bus

I really like having a bag that we can notice it's ours. I have another hot pink suitcase, and H has lime green. We also have these little ribbon type things that loop around the handles so we recognize they are ours.

I agree with the PPs, no black luggage for us!

I upgraded between five and one year ago. I bought one piece for my son five years ago who was going to a camp, certain size needed that we didn't have and loved the four wheels that move any direction, just found that so much easier to manage. We do about four trips a year, maybe six for DS. Anyway, before a long trip to Kauai, I replaced our two large black bags with the two wheels (I really didn't like the bags either) with the four for the same style and model that I had gotten in the smaller case for DS (just loved that bag) (about thee years ago). I just really found these easier to mange than what we had had before. Since then too, just before DS did a summer abroad trip studying photography where we would be carrying and expensive camera and lenses, I bought one of those small hard sided bags, with the four 350 wheels, so I have four bags altogether that are five years old or younger. Traveling can be a big hassle and if updates in technology make it easier with easier to maneuver luggage and you can justify the expense in the ole vacation budget, I say go for it. // And I'm very sorry to admit (sounds vain) that I do take pleasure in looking at our luggage on the carousel (on every trip since we've gotten it I have said to myself) -- oh that luggage looks so nice, I love those bags, they have really made traveling easier too.

I think the better deal in luggage too, are some pretty good brands on sale vs. more discount pieces full price (price difference isn't that much). I'm not talking anything that extravagant either. I bought our luggage at Macy's -- just found that one piece that I was gaga about and within two years replaced two old big bags I really didn't like with stuff that matched that. And as stated I also got something else too I wanted specifically for Italy travel for DS we didn't have. Oh and I almost forgot too, last January before going to a wedding in Idaho -- family -- I was a reader, etc. we got a wheeled suit bag that also stands up on it's own -- really cool and kept the clothes so nice and not wrinkled -- had way more nice clothes to bring on that trip with the special dinner and wedding. Found that bag great for going on a cruise the next year too. // They have made enough significant improvements in the past decade that I'm really happy about having upgraded. If you like what you have, though, and it's practical go for it. // So far cross my fingers, the new stuff has held up very well. -- but we are just talking like four to six trips per year.

I totally see no problem in driving..though you'll see below it's not my preferred method for long enough trips-my luggage for the record is far from cute, is worn since I've been using it for 10 years and not being gentle with it either but works perfectly fine by me.

I'm on the Kansas side in the KC metro (I saw that you were from MO but didn't know where)...When I was 15 my dad, sister, stepmom, myself and 3 old english sheepdogs in a suburban made a road trip down to about an 1 hr and a half south of orlando...that is the absolute last time I do that long of a road trip in that short of a time(road time was almost 20 hours done over 2 days and where we started at is about 20-25 mins closer than where I currently live)-the dogs were the most behaved out of us all lol.

I like road trips but family road trips to too far of places are just not worth it for us..my husband's family is actually much worse than my own when put into a car for too long. We are fortunate to have MCI (or KCI to us locals) near us where it's about a 2 1/2 hour non-stop flight to orlando versus an 18 1/2 or 19 1/2 hour drive depending on the route even with the added cost of flying it sure beats 2 days of driving there and 2 days of driving back.

2 summers ago though my husband, his step-dad and his mom and I did a road trip to myrtle beach (to stay there for 3 days) making full days stops with a night each in nashville and asheville on the way there and on the way back savannah and back again to nashville..we did quite well but that was probably because we had long enough stops in between and the 4 of us get along the best out of the bunch-it's when you start adding either of my husband's younger sisters that the drama unfolds (one of those sisters will be going with us to WDW come September 2017).

We did save a lot of money that myrtle beach road trip because it was for whatever reason so completely outrageous to get from KCI to myrtle beach at that time but still it's not something we would do often. Then again when we fly it's pretty much only with Southwest using their wanna get away fares and they are pretty decent depending on where you are going from KCI.

On the luggage issue, do u prefer rolling duffle or hard upright for airplane travel?
