Can someone just "talk" this thru with me?

6th trip to Universal, last visit in 2013

This is my first trip ever to Orlando without doing WDW. Normally we do both theme parks, and rush a bit through Universal. I know with four full days at Universal, we will have plenty of time to see both parks, as well as have some much-needed down time at the pool. In the past, I have always purchased the park-to-park tix, because I felt that made the best use of our time. This year, with no weekends in our stay, no special shows scheduled during our visit, and basically no fluctuations in the high crowd levels, I was planning to be more economical. Option #1 - I can buy a 4-day single park ticket for $164 ea ($656 total). Or, Option #2 - I can buy a 3-day park-to-park for $199 ea ($797 total).

Besides being cheaper, the first option gives us a whole extra day, which would make the entire vacation more leisurely. However, we definitely need to ride the Hogwarts Express, for which a park-to-park ticket is required. If I chose option #1, What would it cost to upgrade our single-day tickets on one of our days?

I think it's $40 to upgrade for the ride, but I'm hoping someone else answers too to confirm.

The four day park to park is $234.99 at the gate.
Four day base ticket is $189.99 at the gate.
Three day park to park is $224.09

You will just pay the difference between the gate price of what you've got and the gate price of what you want, as long as you have used the tickets at least once. I recommend upgrading at guest services inside the park. So if you get the four day base ticket, it will cost you $50 to upgrade to the four day park to park and $40 to upgrade to the 3 day park to park.

Please bear with me... I'm not sure I understand. Say I buy my 4-day single park ticket for $165. Now I want to ride the Hogwarts Express on one day. What is the cheapest way to do that? Are you saying I must upgrade my ticket to a 3 or 4 day park to park? Because I only need to go park to park on one day....

if you bought a single day pass, very easy to update it to park to park tix.

when you buy a 3 day pass or 4 day one park only and upgrade it, all the days become the park to park passes.

can't upgrade only one day of them.

if your plans are to upgrade on your last day, do it on the first date in the park and enjoy the p2p for your entire stay.

Don't forget to check out Undercover Tourists for tickets as they often have better prices than gate prices.

You can't upgrade for just one day, you have to upgrade the entire thing. So if you bought a 4 day base ticket, you'd have to upgrade to a 4 day park to park.

You can't upgrade for just one day, you have to upgrade the entire thing. So if you bought a 4 day base ticket, you'd have to upgrade to a 4 day park to park.

Just to play devil's advocate, what would happen if you tried to upgrade on the last day of a 4 day ticket?

If you have a 4 day single park pass and upgraded on the last day you would cry when you found out you could have been park hoping since the first day

And then be miffed over the price you paid for 4 days when only using it for one day

So then, if I now understand this correctly, it seems that the most economical thing to do is buy the 3-day park to park for $199? But, I will be losing the extra day... Otherwise, I can buy the 4-day single park ticket for $165 each, and then, on the first day, upgrade to the 4-day park to park, which, regardless of what I originally paid, will be charged at the "Gate price" fee of $50 per ticket, bringing my total up to $215 each?

You will be credited the gate price of the ticket, no matter what you paid.

So, if you buy the 4 day base ticket at $164 (the gate price is $189.99) you will pay the difference between the $189.99 and the new gate price of the 4 day park to park at $234.99. It doesn't matter what you pay for your ticket, you will always pay the difference between the two gate prices (plus taxes of course). So the less you can pay for your ticket, the more money you actually save. In your case, you'd be saving quite a bit. Gate prices are $20 higher for all multi-day tickets than purchasing online at www.universalorlando.com and better prices can certainly be found at other discount dealers.

Ok! I think I've got it! The 3 day park to park is $199, incl tax. For about $14 more per person, I can have the 4-day park to park... meaning I buy the 4-day single park ticket at $165 before my trip, then upgrade at the park for approx. $48 incl. tax, bringing my total to $213. Thank you so much!
