Debt Dumpers - 2016

Well a year after getting turned down for a mobile home/personal type loan , we have paid off some debt and raised our credit scores to acceptable for our housing program here only to be told that Hubs debt to income is too high and in order to add me on the loan I need one more line of credit with 12 months of payments .. REALLY .. UGH.. so the plan is taxes, bonus and every spare dollar to pay off hubs 2 CC's by the end of March then wait for it to hit the credit report as Zero balances and re-apply.. we found a perfect brand new double wide in our current mobile home park .. fingers crossed it will work out for us..

Can I ask what they asked you to get it down to? I'm just curious since I'm desperate to buy a condo to save money! My rent is crazy and it's not going down but if I bought it would be a much cheaper payment.

I'm doing lots of research but am curious what the bank actually told someone.

I get paid next week (once a month paycheck). I sat today and made an official spreadsheet of every dollar I owe anyone and monthly bills (utilities, etc) so that I can start a super focused plan next week. While's it not chump change, it's not nearly as bad when I look at it. I think I will be able to pay off my smallest credit card, half of my highest-interest card. That will be really nice!

I finally have a paycheck!!!!!!! They paid me through today and the money is already deposited! I haven't seen a stub yet (have to be logged in on work computer) but it's on the higher end of my estimates so I'm thrilled!!!!!

I'm waiting for one more piece of information to finish my taxes but I'm getting a refund from federal and an incredibly small one from the state but I don't owe!

I do have to pay my city taxes Q4 from last year and then make my Q1 estimate and payment so that's going to be a small chunk.

I am excited to finally have income again!! Now I just have to work on a budget!

Oh my gosh, I'm SOOOO behind (again)!

Kymm, have you heard of the website called letote? You rent clothes! For $50ish a month they send you so many items INCLUDING JEWELRY! A lady at DH'S office was a stay at home mom for 13 years and had NO work clothes when she began working. She loves LeTote. If you get something you really like, you can buy it. Keep in mind it is used clothing, but it's in style and your wardrobe is always coordinated with jewelry.

Just a thought.

I just started reading this thread a week ago. WELL I was seeing how people would post about "murphy" Well let me just say...MURPHY hit us. On Wed. of this week...I noticed what looked like staining on our carpet in various sizes and shapes in one are of our family room downstairs. Well it was WATER. My carpet in that area felt like a sponge. We had a water line leak that backed up in the unfinished part of our basement and traveled into that room. Needless to say WE had to call the county/plumbers to assess and turn our water off from the watermain. We didn't have water until 10:30 yesterday morning when we had the line replaced. We had to spend 500 home owners deductible. That covered the water mitigation team to come out Wed. night to clean up, ripped up carpet and take off baseboards and remove padding. They were here for hours. They left these giant dehumidifiers and fans in the unfinished area and the family room area that was damaged. Most of that is gone now except in the storage room where hopefully they can come and get those items too that have been SUCKING UP MY ELECTRIC. :( The ded. also covers the general contractor's work that will start next week. So not only did we have the inconvience of no water we also had a MESSED UP HOUSE with us pulling stuff out of the storage area of the unfinished basement/ moving furniture in the family room. My house is a disaster downstairs. :( The water line was replaced yesterday to the tune of 2500. The insurance company is ONLY reimbursing us for 300 of that. :( So we had MURPHY hit to the tune of 2700. What was bad was, I had just written checks out for our youngest son's high school for his Univeral trip in April. That was 375 and I had to pay 200 this week too for our college son's iphone replacement, oh and 184 for our son's two AP tests he is taking in May. Not to mention that I had to cancel my sub jobs Thursday and Friday so I lost pay there too. UGH

Welcome! I feel your pain! I'm the one that had a neighbors tree fall on my house last summer & still have repairs going in at my home. I finally got my new bedroom carpet installed yesterday!!! Please make sure they treat for mold- which has reeked such havoc at my home. Sending you some pixiedust:

Ugh, hoping I don't have a Murphy visit! Our dishwasher isn't stellar and we have to run it on the highest setting with two packs of soap to get the dishes clean. I looked up some tips on cleaning it and did that this morning, so I'm hoping that will help. But then I noticed when I pulled up the bottom sprayer and filter, there was sitting water underneath it. Not actually in the bottom of my dishwasher, but underneath the dispenser. I couldn't really feel anything down there, and I tried jiggling the hose under the sink, but didn't notice anything. We do have our home warranty, but I'm going to try to see if I can figure out the problem without really doing too much before calling them (I know if we "fix" it ourselves and later have a problem, they won't cover it). I think it's older anyways, so I'm sure a dishwasher is in our future regardless. However, after just doing DH's taxes, I am really not looking forward to spending money any time soon! Oh how I wish we could file jointly!

Well I went today and did my taxes - I didn't realize till talking to my cpa that for my identity theft I could've contacted the irs and gotten an identity theft pin in case someone else tried to file taxes under me. I had searched everywhere on their website and didn't see anything. So fingers crossed that my refund goes through! Then after I get it I can contact the irs and get a pin that I can use next year. The only thing I dislike is that you can't file electronically with the pin - but it's better than someone filing under my social!

Sorry I missed from your previous posts about this process that you weren't aware or hadn't been advised to contact the IRS. But, the good news is you can e-file with the IP PIN! Info below is from the IRS website.
Visit www.irs.gov/identitytheft for more information.

What if I have already been the victim of tax-related identity theft and use an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)? An IP PIN is a 6-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security Number on fraudulent federal income tax returns. Once the IRS sends you an IP PIN, you must use it to confirm your identity on your current tax return and any delinquent returns filed during the calendar year. The IRS will send you a new IP PIN by postal mail prior to the start of the filing season.

Continue to use your IP PIN to file any Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ or 1040PR/SS, during the current calendar year. This includes any delinquent returns filed during the year. The IRS will provide you with a new IP PIN every year before the start of the tax season. Only use your most current IP PIN when filing your return. Because of an error, the IP PIN notices dated Jan. 4, 2016 will say 2014 but the number is valid for the 2015 tax year.

I just signed up for a Costco membership using this great deal on LivingSocial's website HERE! Thought I'd share it here since it's a great deal - you get a $20 Costco card plus a free pizza from their food court and a couple other coupons when you sign up for a membership. I plan to get a lot of my pet supplies here to save a bit of money and also things like cereal. I'm also going to look into their auto program for purchasing my vehicle this fall.

Also, I'm driving myself crazy with this phone crap. Turns out that my internet provider's (CenturyLink) customer service is nightmarish according to all online reviews I've seen so I feel lucky that I haven't had any issues (knock on wood) with my internet billing. I was trying to add a landline to my account but haven't had any luck and after reading all of the reviews I don't want to go that route and have it screw up my billing.

So... I discovered that I can use an old att&t go phone that I have in a drawer if I purchase a new sim card for it which only costs about $5. Then I should be able to hopefully keep my phone bill to $10/month using the pay as you go cards you buy for them. I really hope this is the end of my phone saga!!

I've heard about sites like this but haven't had time to really look into them. I'm more concerned about what happens if something doesn't fit right.

Anyways, i paid for my car repairs today. $1620 with tax. Ouch!!!! I put it on my rewards card and am now waiting very impatiently for my tax refund to pay it off.

I did attend a fundraiser last night and won $100! I spent $40 so really $60 profit. Yay!

I redid my budget for the next 6 months. Debt dumping will take a backseat for a month or two but I will cash flow the remaining two repairs for my car and I will cash flow my vacations.

I need to cut some more costs so I will be doing a $50 a week grocery budget challenge. Basically I will eat out of the pantry as much as possible and supplement with $50 a week. I pack every day now so I really need to cook more. I made a list of "I'm tired" meals (cereal, waffles, Mac 'n cheese) and meals I can cook on Sunday's and Wednesday's for the week. When DS is home on the weekend I will need to cook dinner Friday and Saturday.

I'm going to use cash instead of my rewards card and whatever is left over I will stick in an envelope and use it for vacation extra's.

Murphy needs to go away!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. We just went through this in October. We were away for the weekend when the petsitter called to let us know an upstairs toilet had malfunctioned and was pouring water into our kitchen. Our house was a wreck for a couple of months and we had to postpone our Disney trip.

See if your insurance will help with your electric bill. Our guy said to send him the bill when we got it (ours shows usage for the past 12 months on the bill) and the insurance company would pay the difference to cover what the fans and dehumidifiers used.

I hope your house is back to normal soon!

I'm undecided. I'm thinking about staying a graduate program. It would cost about $10k total, paying $1000 every 8 weeks when the new term started for 2 years. If I complete it, I'd get a $3k pay bump per year, roughly.

I just don't think I can consistently come up with the program cost, which would mean student loans. I'm also not sure where I'd find the time to do the work, or at least with my current schedule. So I might have to quit one of my side jobs. Both of which pay more than the $3k per year. But, when the program is over I'd have more me time. And it would set me up for consideration as the next math coach when the current one requires (about 5 years).

On an almost plus side, if I did student loans, I could take the max and use the excess to pay off some of my other debts, moving payment till after I finished, and with a lower interest rate (half or less).

But I just don't know.

Thank you!! I filed my taxes yesterday with my cpa and fingers crossed they go through - then I will notify the irs of my identity theft - if I do so now there's the chance it will stop my refund that I just filed. Thank you so much!!

Welcome to all the newbies on this thread!! So it looks like Murphy is going through us all like a tornado! My elliptical that I have has been slowly falling apart and today it looks like it's done - the bottom basically fell out. I've had it for like 7 years so it's not like I haven't gotten use out of it. So I have to shop around and looks like I have to buy another one. So it will set me back almost $1k but I have to have an elliptical!!

I could move up one more step on my school contract with a second masters degree, but for me the cost/time ratio to the raise I'd earn just isn't worth it. It's good you're looking hard at the numbers before jumping into it. Don't get me wrong, furthering education is a worthwhile cause, but it depends on the debt it incurs.

Check at garage sales, online garage sales, Craigslist or newspaper classifieds. People always seem to want to get rid of them! Of course don't go alone if you find one!

How far are you from NJ? Mine is about 5 yrs old and sadly, it's barely used. Dh bought it for me after giving his sister my treadmill that he though I didn't want. Grrr...

Just finished filing my taxes! What a relief! Hope I get my refunds quickly!!

$1500 for a transmission rebuild! It still needs an additional $750-$1,000 worth of work so I'll make that a priority over my snowball.

I'm going to pay for it with my rewards card then pay it off when I get my tax refund. The remainder of my refund will go to my Disney trip in June and then I will just need to figure out how to pay for the rest of the stuff I need to save for. I'm sure some belt tightening is the way to go.

I'm super proud of myself tho! I still don't have to touch my EF and I cash rolled all of this. I have been packing my lunch every day except once when I forgot. I've also tamed down our eating out. This training is so exhausting! It's 7-1/2 hours of learning, I haven't done this kind of schooling in forever! Once I'm on a normal schedule I will start cooking more often.

Again, I know I'm behind a few pages. ... the Cobalt was replaced by the Cruze, wasn't it? Our friend bought a brand new Cruze in 2013/2014 (I don't recall). The tranny went out before he had 15k miles on it! It was under warranty so it didn't cost him anything to repair, But he dumped it back on the dealer. Turns out he discovered that manual trannies odd that periods were prone to issues. (I think he had the manual. ) the other trannie type was fine!
