News Round Up 2016

I wonder why this keeps getting brought up again with frequency?

I guess I just don't understand why anyone cares what the parks are called? Or maybe I'm misjudging it?

I'm with you - but some people are very attached to the name. There's people on the boards that still insist on calling it MGM - like they somehow are unable to say a different name. But I could really care less. The truth is, changing the name hardly matters. If it's Disney's Hollywood Studios or Disney's Hollywood Adventure or Disney's Hollywoodland or whatever -it's the same thing.

Showing my age here, but I still sometimes have a slip of the tongue and say "Disney Village" instead of "Downtown Disney"...whoops! I mean Disney Springs. Lol. Not because I'm stubborn, but just by accident.

Ryan, I enjoy your news and rumors. You remind me of my son, who's a few years younger than you but is also a major Disney freak. He could probably mod a thread on Disney/Pixar movies, budgets, and such. Very intelligent, both of you! :thumbsup2

I was just wondering because they came out with a lot of new "Hollywood Studios" branded merchandise and it would be weird if they brought out all of those products out and suddenly changed the name. I guess they don't really care about spending money on new products.

How often do sports teams change their uniforms? As often as they can because then the fans have to buy new merchandise.

Works for Disney too.

The park name though? Does that matter?

I'm just gonna take Everyone's word for it.

Disney knows full well what's "in a name"...they've been tinkering with it for ever.

There's a certain fireworks display...that's honestly too old (a common thing in Orlando)...that frankly isn't very good.

But oh...the people mob it...they had to pour concrete to accommodate for it. But honestly...the name does a lot for the appeal. Just my take.

Honestly it's a few years off from when they do it. As others said they probably won't do it until Star Wars land opens.

Yep!

I know it's old. We've seen it many times. But the name creates an emotional connection with everything that 'is' Disney. It is still a first night tradition for my family and I might even be a little sad if it was replaced by a new show. Even if they named it "Things that come true" or "Upon a Star". o_O

Count me in on this camp. I usually try to stay deluxe and wait for the discounted room offers. They seem to be few and far between lately. I've looked towards DVC but to be honest I haven't spent enough time to get a solid understanding of how this works. However it is clear that I can possibly get a better deal going that route.

My point being that I stay deluxe but haven't because of the cost. If it is pushing folks to DVC rental than I can certainly see them attempting to cut that off. The problem in my mind is if they continue to convert and the rentals dry up due to some unknown change in policy, how do you possibly go back?

Sorry for the delayed entry here but I'm a frequent but delinquent follower of this thread.

Thanks Reetz always enjoyable
Just FYI it is in all of the declarations and legal paperwork in all DVC that renting is allowed, so they could not actually stop it from going on.

Pretty sure it says that the membership cannot be used for commercial purposes, to be determined by the powers that be.....

Commercial purposes is defined by DVC as I believe 20 rentals or more per year on the same membership. It might even be higher than that, and as of VGF they removed the clause about 20 rentals from the POS, so it might not even have a tangible limit anymore. Renting any timeshare is permitted by Florida law, just not commercially.

And I think the Florida law is the kicker from Disney's prospective. If they had their way, there would be no rentals- as those people are just "new sales" To them.

I think it's all academic anyway - the overwhelming majority of people who buy DVC are Disney bugnuts...and never have nor will rent. It's a small fringe.

We know people who always rent...but that's because they were stupid and bought a new development townhouse near BVL to "move there" during the housing bubble. Now they justify it as a "vacation home" (yuck) and rent the DVC. But that's like a one In a hundred type thing. I don't see mass DVC rental speculation booming.

Sure I agree with all of that except for putting a number on the yearly rentals-- me thinks a loophole for them to exploit if needed.

I completely agree! Disney has sent more than one of our renters tons of shiny brochures while they are living it up on their rented points at one of the DVC resorts ;).

Right...if you know what a rat smells like you would have to assume the lawyers could find a way around it. And it's not like regs haven't been rewritten in Florida for a certain corporations gain before...

But I don't think it's a big enough deal for them to worry about at this time.

I think that's why they removed it as of VGF. As LOL says above, I feel as well that it's just such a small number of people renting that it's not worth even adding a clause into the POS anymore other than to let buyers know that it's allowed but that Disney will not help them find renters.

Sorry to get this great thread off track. We can move this to the DVC area if needed, @rteetz :)!

Actually Disney doesn't lose anything when people rent. It was still Purchased. Just someone else is using it, and when it is rented out it might actually be rented to someone who will spend more money they a regular DVC member.

Yes that actual room is paid for, but those renters might otherwise have paid for a room of their own in a Disney hotel (or not) so Disney loses potential revenue.

The numbers are likely small enough not to matter.

Very true. Good point.

But they'd also rather have DVC filled with AP touting DVC members and the renters in $550 a night contemporary rooms taking the vacation club tour...

Those tours must be fun now...as the math is competely different and much of the flexibility is limited - compared to my day
