My Sony Cybershot LCD is black...

Went to use the camera yesterday and it turned on fine, although it's like it had been reset. I had to enter the date and time and then when I tried to use it, the LCD is just black. The camera has power, will even click to take a picture (I think, although all I can't see it, it's black). The displays such as the menu work on the LCD screen.

I've tried the troubleshooting from the manual and looked on the website but am unsuccessful. Just wondering if anyone has any advice? Also, wondering if I should take it to a local camera place to see if they can fix it or send it back to the Sony service place (I'm sure my warranty has probably run out, it's a few years old).

Thank you!

I had that issue with my old Sony A300. Thankfully I still had a warranty on it. It's fixable but may be cheaper to buy a new camera. I think, if I remember correctly, if I had to pay for it the repair cost was more than I paid for the camera.

It used to be more common in the film era (shooting a roll of black pictures)...but is there a lens cap on the camera?

Haha, yes the camera has a lens cap but even with it off I am having this problem.

I'm going to bring it to a local camera shop this week and see what they say. If a repair price sounds reasonable I'll go with that, otherwise I'll be camera shopping soon.

What model is it? Unless it's pretty new and a premium model like the rx100, then the camera is not likely to have much value. For example, the Cybershot hx20, a 3 year old model, can be picked up on eBay for $100. And that was a pretty high level model.
A cheaper older model.. Like the w310, you can pick up a used replacement for under $50.

It's a Cybershot DSC-HX1.

I can tell you with my A300, it would have cost almost $600 to fix my LCD screen (and that is with me purchasing the new screen). It would be just as cheap to purchase the newer upgraded version of that camera...I have the same one and I am looking to upgrade, but I haven't had a chance to look.
