Which Rides/Attractions Are Most Awkward Solo?

Rides are one of the BEST parts about a solo trip! The only ride I had a weird experience on was Buzz Lightyear but every other ride was awesome and I rode everything at least twice. I'm sad to read some of you didnt like Laugh Factory! My last solo trip I laughed so hard during that performance my stomach hurt. It's great how each show is different.

I also loved Mickeys Philharmagic. Nice air conditioning on a hot day and it was just adorable. As a haunted mansion fanatic I may have ridden it 4 times, lol, never remotely awkward.

The key here is to focus on your fun, not other people.

Yes! Well said! :thumbsup2

I am actually going on my first trip ever to Disney World solo this coming weekend June 19th-22nd. I am a 27 year old male, and I had some concerns about riding some rides alone.

I have a fast pass for the following

Haunted Mansion

Space mountain

Toy Story Mania

Star Tours

Tower of Terror

Dinosaur

Everest

Particularly, for Toy Story Mania I feel like it might be kinda awkward, since the ride is made for families/ friends/ groups. But this topic has made me feel better about it ha. Anyone actually rode Toy Story Mania solo recently?

How was your trip? I started going solo a couple years ago & have always had a great time on the rides! What was more awkward for me in the beginning was eating solo, depending on how crowded the dining room was. But with time, that faded & I've grown to really love & look forward to my solo trips! :) I have never done Toy Story solo but would imagine I'd like it just the same.

I would say the only thing I still haven't done solo is a TS but I have plans to make that happen in the near future. I wouldn't choose one like Biergarten or Teppan Edo where I know it's communal seating. But I would go to Garden Grill or Tusker House with no issues. :goodvibes

I have been going to WDW with my family (wife and kids) for many, many years and can honestly say I can't recall paying attention at all to whether or not people were in line for rides and attractions alone. Now that the kids are grown and my wife is now an ex-wife, I wonder how awkward it would be to ride certain rides alone. It seems like it might be kinda creepy for a 48-year old guy to be standing in the line to ride Pirates by himself? The rides with single-rider lines I could probably handle.

How do you get used to doing it alone? Which rides do you feel more awkward than others?
Rides are the easiest part of being solo. No one can tell if you are really solo or maybe the rest of your party is taking a bathroom break! At times, you may feel like letting everyone know that you are solo and that's OK too. You get in that Pirate line and have yourself a GRAND time singing "Yo-ho, Yo-ho, A pirate's life for me!" Don't worry...they'll be others singing also.

I loved that on my solo trip I could choose to do whatever I wanted. Lay by the pool, a tour of all of the Magic Kingdom resorts with time to walk the properties and shop, ride rides, whatever I wanted! One thing I felt awkward about was waiting in lines. Because I had no one to talk to I felt like an eavesdropper on other group's conversations. It was hard to not hear them and hard also to not jump in and start talking to them. I think some people were OK with it and others were like who's this strange lady by herself.

For some reason I am ok on Peter Pan alone, but I feel weird on It's A Small World. No problems on any other rides or shows. I generally stick to counter service, tried Biergarten last trip and it went pretty well. I have also enjoyed Raglan Road solo. Thinking of trying Tune In Lounge next trip in December.

I've done several solo trips. I agree that mostly no one notices. Like @limabeanies said, it's awesome to just be able to go at your own pace, explore, chat with CMs, lay by the pool, do whatever you darn well please. I love seeing all the little details that I otherwise miss.

At first I was also nervous about eating alone at TS restaurants, especially those with group tables. But now I've done solo TS all over the World-- including Biergarten multiple times, and Teppan Edo. As everyone says, servers are nice to you, and you do get over the weirdness. At Biergarten/Teppan Edo I actually enjoyed chatting with the people I was seated with, and also enjoyed that I only had to chat as much as I felt like it-- no social obligation beyond polite friendliness if I didn't dig it. You can just decide it's time to hop up for more sausage! The restaurants are all pretty loud and distracting for everyone, especially buffets or places with entertainment like Biergarten/Teppan Edo-- so it's not like you're left sitting in awkward silence. If anything, for once I was not obviously alone!

Who cares what anyone thinks, especially people you will never see again? Do what you want to do. Life is too short and precious to care about those things.

I've done 4 solo visits and have done every attraction, many TS restaurants and 3 tours on them. I never felt awkward or felt like anyone was looking at me strangely. In fact, many CMs love talking to solo guests since they have your undivided attention! :rotfl2:But seriously, don't be self concious at all, lots of people do solo trips and have a great time. It's a different feeling to know you can do whatever you want and not have to worry about what anyone else prefers. If you want to ride the same attraction 10 times in a row then no one can stop you! :goodvibes

The only ride I felt awkward on solo was waiting in line for nearly 70 minutes for Midway Mania. Now, luckily a DVC sales rep had given me nearly 50 stickers, so I made friends handing out the stickers to kids in line. There is little cell phone reception in the line for MM, the people in front of me spoke spanish and the people behind me were not friendly. It was a loooong wait and other than taking pictures and going through my pics I was bored out of my gourd. So, download some apps that don't need wifi to play and bring a kindle or book incase this happens to you. Otherwise I had the best Solo trip ever and I really never felt awkward at all. Oh and Soarin' I couldn't get unbuckled at the end of the ride and that was a little awkward, but I eventually got it!

Never felt awkward in a ride line-I keep a kindle with me just in case the lines are long-but even traveling with family-I usually ended up in ride lines alone so never felt self conscious. My favorite are the single rider lines obviously, but I love the fantasy land rides and do not hesitate to hop in line...

I did my first solo trip last year and loved it! As others have said the only time I felt a little awkward was while in a long line (for soarin) and a couple of times when they ask how many people are in your party. I don't know why they are so surprised that people don't always have someone with them. I really enjoyed the Sci-fi restaurant as the atmosphere in there is great, with the dimmed lights and so much to look at it never feels like anyone is looking at you, and the servers were very friendly. I love the freedom of being able to do whatever I want to do, like riding Haunted Mansion or Star Tours 4 times in a row :-) The more people you go with, the more time you waste arguing about which direction to go in next, or when to eat and all the rest. Solo is definitely the way to go!

The looks of the cast members when I'm the only person riding It's A Small World at 2am on an EMH night... and the even better looks when I ask if I can just stay on and ride again. Awkward? Maybe... but worth it!

What a great thread! I may be taking a solo trip next fall, so this is all really helpful, especially since it's says what I expected: no one is focused on you, so just have fun! Most of the "potentially awkward" rides are ones I don't particularly like to ride (Dumbo, Primeval Whirl, etc.), so yay for that. I can see how waiting in long lines might be annoying/boring, but I knit, so I'll probably have a sock to work on in line. I'm not particularly outgoing, but I'm sure that will be a conversation starter at times.

I just stumbled onto this thread, and I had to chuckle. A couple of years ago, I was on a trip in DL with DH and 2 DSs, but I don't like thrill rides and they do. So, while they were off doing SM, I walked around alone and ended up in line for Alice. It was our first trip to DL. It was a long line and I just people watched and figured some may be having their thoughts about me. :) Anyway, Alice has one part of the ride where you come out in the SLOW MOVING vehicle on the 'roof', zigzag on the track and slowly go back down and in, and all the people in line can see you. It was a little difficult to not feel silly. My family still laughs about this (just picturing it in their minds) and DH said I should have put my hands up and yelled "WHEEEEE" . :)

I would go on anything by myself if I have no one else to go with me. I'm 56 and only like the tame "kiddie" rides. I don't care what others are thinking ...well, maybe a little :)

That's one thing I loved about DL-they had a few more "kiddie" rides than at WDW. I also loved the Alice ride. Yes, I definitely do "kiddie"-type rides at WDW and don't feel awkward. Well, I do hesitate to do Barnstormer-that one's kind of fast (thank goodness it's so short).

I've got to print out this thread and hang it in my room!
Would've saved so much money if I'd had the guts to book a solo trip...
Maybe next time :-)

The only thing I'd do with my family (all adults) or friends that I won't do solo is Test Track now that they changed it to the "design your own" thing. With my luck I'd get stuck with people who designed a horrible ride. Before the change, I had no issues with the single rider line because I KNEW what I was getting. This way, who knows what the people I'm with would have chosen.

Granted, it was never a favorite or "most-do" so I don't consider it a big loss. :)

For your information, you get your own computer station at the Test Track Design Studio when you say you are the only one in your party. They won't pair you up with another group to design a car at the design terminals. Also, the computer stations where you "design" a car has no effect on the actual Test Track ride. If anything, you are just competing with other people in your car for the highest scores the "designed" car you made did for performance, power, etc... as they rank your scores in-ride and at the end of the ride.

I've already been on 4 solo Disney World trips, all in my 30s, and I have one scheduled for next month - there's probably not a single ride or restaurant that I haven't experienced as a solo traveler at this point. I do em all and love them, whether they be boat rides like Small World, or coasters like the Mountains, or fine dining like the California Grill or character dining like at the Crystal Palace. I have found wait staff and cast members to be uniformly kind and friendly. In fact one time, I had a young man cast member ask me how large my party was and when I replied "Just one." He said, "Not "Just" one! Never "Just" one", and that pixie dust was so sweet and enthusiastically rendered, it put me on a high the rest of the day.

I just look at the whole thing as an adventure - it's exciting being on your own in Disney, getting to experience all these magical attractions and incredible restaurants.
