Mickey Bars in Bed & Dole Whips for Lunch - Nov 15 Dining Report - Complete!

Missed the beginning of the party, but I'm here now. Looks like you're off to a great start

great photos ..I love a good breakfast and I love Disney scrambled eggs for some reason..havent figured out why...maybe they put some pixie dust in it....thanks for your reviews so far

Love that you can get snack sized Le Cellier goodies! I loved that at Food and Wine, the sausage looks good, too bad it looked better than it tasted.
That is a long wait for a beer flight!
Looking forward to Flying Fish :goodvibes

Me too! $7.50 isn't too bad to try something when the whole thing costs $40+! Seriously the longest time I have ever waited for beer haha.

Great Report! I cannot wait to hear about your meal at Flying Fish, as it is one of our favorites! Also hello from another Disney Fan from the Burgh!

Flying Fish was seriously amazing! I can't wait to go back. Small world - I am originally from Plum! Now living in Erie. :)

Thanks!! They must put pixie dust in them. :thumbsup2

Flying Fish Cafe
When planning our trip, I wanted to include at least one signature meal. I think I had California Grill booked for Thursday during our trip, but Justin took one look at the menu and didn't think it was anything he would enjoy. I also had looked at Artist Point (originally we were planning to stay at VWL) and Flying Fish. Ultimately we went with Flying Fish after some suggestions and trip reports with some delicious looking food. :thumbsup2 Justin is satisfied with anywhere that has a good steak, so he was perfectly happy with this choice!

Our dinner was booked for 6 PM. We left Pop around 5:00 and unfortunately waited longer than we would've liked for the bus. By the time wheelchairs loaded and we got to DHS, it was 5:40  and I was nervous we wouldn't make it! The boat was on its way, but with only 20 minutes to spare we decided to walk.

It's really a pretty walk with a nice view! We enjoyed it and didn't mind walking.

We made it from Hollywood Studios to the front door of Flying Fish with only a few minutes to spare.

Before I could use the restroom, our table was ready! We were served by a lovely lady named Nadia. She was so sweet and helpful. We really enjoyed our meal with her!

Here are some menu pics, although I already knew what I wanted as my entree! ;)

We were seated close to the bar and the chef's counter. As you can see it wasn't too busy yet.

I ordered a glass of Riesling - I usually like a semi-sweet (sweeter rather than dry in my case), smooth white. I had the Fess Parker Riesling (either 2011 or 2012) and it was wonderful. It was nice and smooth, not too strong of a sweetness either. I could've had a few more glasses of this but I figured I would save my debauchery for Food and Wine. :thumbsup2

I think Justin had a Diet Coke to drink, I also had a glass of ice water. Nadia brought us some potato leek bread with butter.. it was warm and delicious!

I could've eaten more bread! It was so good.

I wanted an appetizer, and nothing really stuck out to Justin, so he left the decision totally up to me. I had read that this was good so I ordered the calamari and rock shrimp.

6EE99365-8AF3-4B4B-A9B9-C76B79A535AE_zpsesbeqlsu.jpg

Crispy Togarashi-scented Calamari and Florida Rock Shrimp - Asian-inspired Dipping Sauce $16.00

These were brought out to us on split plates, which was really nice, except Justin didn't intend on eating much of it! I convinced him to just try it and he really ended up liking the calamari. "I'm just pretending they're onion rings," he said. Okay then.

They had a really light breading and weren't too rubbery. I hate when things like this get soggy because they're breaded, that was definitely not the case here. The shrimp were great as well. The Asian inspired dipping sauce was nice and sweet and went really well with the calamari. I even ate a little bit of the slaw - everything went together really nicely. I was glad that we ordered these. Justin polished off all of his calamari and I ate a few of his shrimp. Justin would rate this a 3, I would rate this a 4.5.

When we ordered our entrees, I was disappointed that I didn't see the duo of potato crusted red snapper and strip steak! I had been dying to try both of those. I asked Nadia if they took it off the menu and she said yes, but she would ask the chef if he would mind preparing it for me. He said absolutely.. yay! I love both seafood and steak so I was really happy that I did not have to choose between both.

Signature Flying Fish Cafe Entree Duo - Char-crusted Angus NY Strip Steak and Potato-wrapped Red Snapper $49.00

Justin on the other hand knew he either wanted the steak or pork tenderloin. He decided to go with the steak.

5D28991E-FF29-4D33-B8A9-3B3A0B97DABF_zpsrho4aexl.jpg

Char-crusted Angus New York Strip Steak - roasted young carrots, fingerling potatoes, heirloom beans, sauce Foyot $48.00

Both of us just thought these entrees were AMAZING. Seriously. I'll start with the steak. Justin gets his well done, I like mine medium-well. Both of ours were cooked perfectly to our likings. Justin said originally he was uneasy when he realized how "charred" it was, but that it ended up being a great thing. It was charred so nicely on the outside but perfect on the inside. Really tender. The potatoes were one of the best parts of the meal. And I think we had green beans and carrots underneath, which were cooked nicely as well - not too mushy and not too firm, just how I like them. The sauce Foyot was SO incredibly good. I don't know what Foyot is, and I don't care, I wanted a whole extra bowl of that to dip my steak in! Both of us rated the steak a 5.

A close up of my steak..
34D7791F-D98C-4E0D-81B2-39758E64F390_zpsvrgw563s.jpg

I also had a piece of red snapper. The potato wrapped red snapper is on a creamy leek fondue with veal glace de viande-red wine-cassis butter (I copied this right off the menu because I have no clue what those words mean). The potato wrapping was great, not the least bit greasy and nice and crisp. The fish was really thick. Not fishy at all, but really delicious. The leek fondue with cassis butter it was on top of was sooo good! I have not had anything like that before. I was not disappointed at all. I'd rate this a 4.5, because it wasn't as out of this world amazing as the steak but I still really enjoyed it.

A close up of the snapper..

We were happy to find we got a 10% AP discount here! Which most places doesn't matter too much but it was a nice discount here. With a Diet Coke, glass of Riesling, calamari and shrimp, duo entree, and strip steak, our total was $135 (before discount).

We decided to skip dessert because I had ICE CREAM on the brain, and I was hoping to get some from the Plaza on Main Street. So Nadia gave us these instead, which was really sweet! :cool1:

One more thing, just in case anyone is curious. We don't really go anywhere that's considered "fine dining" ever - we just don't go out to eat too often, so somewhere like Flying Fish is a real treat for us! We dressed nicely, I had on nice sandals, black shorts, and a blouse. Justin wore a nice Under Armor polo and khaki shorts (I got him to wear shorts without cargo pockets :banana::banana: Small victory!) He did have his hat with him but he took it off for dinner.

I wasn't too concerned about being "out of place" because although it is a signature, I assumed there would be some people in there in their park clothes. There were plenty of people dressed up like we were and there were plenty of people in their park clothes.

There was a family of 4 sitting near us, it looked like a couple, their teenage son, and the couple's adult friend. We were seated near the window facing the boardwalk. Their friends came up to the window and were banging on the glass waving at them. Which I think meant that they wanted to come in. So their friends came in - dirty t-shirts and jean shorts, glowing Mickey ears (with the flashing lights on), and all of their park belongings. They came and stood in the restaurant and talked to their friends, loudly, for at least 20 minutes. AND THEN they marched over to the Chef's counter and asked to meet/speak with the chef, and got a picture with him. I'm sure the chef didn't mind, maybe they knew these two, but to me they just looked like two disruptive looney tunes! Their friends, the ones actually dining there, looked mortified, and the mom rolled her eyes no less than 3 times.

While they did not ruin our dinner in the least, I kind of just thought it was rude and mildly annoying.

Overall we had an amazing meal. It's not somewhere we will return every single time (BUT I WANT TO!) because there are other signatures we want to visit (Cali Grill and Narcoossee's, mainly) .. but it is definitely in my top 5 best meals ever. I am still dreaming about that duo entree. YUM. Thanks all for the awesome dining reviews that included Flying Fish, because it did not disappoint!

Up next.. I find true dairy-laden love at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor.

So happy you all enjoyed your Flying Fish meal. It is one of our favorite disney restaurants and one we rarely miss. So glad your splurge was worth it and yeah for AP discounts on top of that!!!!!!

Late to the party but really enjoying so far- I want to try the duo from FF- seems like such a nice combo!

Great reviews so far! You guys are adorable. Congrats on the wedding from a Disney bride here too. Flying Fish is my favorite and I'm going to get one last trip in before the refurb in Dec. I hope they don't change it too much! Keep the steak! Next time get the augratin potato sides - so worth it!

I never understood the ketcup egg thing either until I moved to TX. Everyone puts salsa on their eggs here, now me included. In fact I always complain they never give me enough for my taco.

Yes! The AP discount is certainly nice. I think it may have been our best Disney meal ever.

Thanks for reading! Yes the duo was fantastic, good balance of some fish and some red meat. To die for. :goodvibes

Ahhh...Flying Fish...one of my favorites. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you! It has definitely become one of my new favorites as well.

Chiming in late but YES to ketchup on scrambled eggs! I'm from CT, so maybe it's a Northeast-ish thing? ;)

Thanks for reading! It might be a NE thing - my eggs feel naked without it. :thumbsup2

After dinner, we headed to Magic Kingdom to watch the parade and Wishes. We had a FP+ for Wishes (decided to try something new this time). We had accomplished so much that morning that we didn't mind just relaxing and watching the nighttime shows.

Back in June we ate at Beaches and Cream and I found love in the No Way Jose sundae. It was amazing but HUGE. I contemplated going back there on this trip but we wanted to try new places.

Peanut butter and chocolate is my favorite flavor combination, so instead of the No Way Jose, we thought we would try the All American Sundae at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on Main Street for dessert after our meal at Flying Fish.

The line to get in was wrapped around a few times outside, but it really moves quickly.

This is soooo big, and it is only one snack credit! $5.39 and you get chocolate and vanilla ice cream, peanut butter and hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, chocolate and peanut butter chips, and a cherry on top.

We could have easily shared this. Justin decided he wanted just a plain vanilla cone, so he went with a single scoop.

The Plaza is the perfect spot for a treat before the parade, or in the middle of the day. ;) I want to say Justin's cone was $3.49? Later in the trip we decided on the kids Mickey cones which are the same size, maybe a tad smaller, and you get two chocolate Mickey ears.

I rated my ice cream a solid 5. It was soooo delicious, although I know it is something you could probably get anywhere, it's a treat for me and I loved every bite. I only finished about half because I can't handle too much dairy and I didn't want my stomach to hate me.

Justin rated his cone a 3, he said it was fine but it was just a plain vanilla cone.

We watched the MSEP and afterwards, it started thundering and lightning, so we decided to call it a night!

Up next.. lunch at Yak and Yeti!

Onto day 2!

We had brought a 6-pack of bagels from home for breakfasts, since we would be staying in a DVC villa and they'd be easy to transport. Justin brought peanut butter from home and I just grabbed some cream cheese in the food court at Pop. Justin bought a refillable mug on our first night and I added a little single serving container of cream cheese - the CM did not even charge us for it - so nice. FYI, there are toasters in the food courts, so we just toasted our bagels that morning, filled up J's mug, and ate our bagels in our room. :thumbsup2

We rope-dropped at Animal Kingdom this morning, and got quite a bit accomplished.
After a fast paced morning of touring, we were hungry come noon. Our Yak and Yeti ADR was for 12:30 but we showed up early, a little before noon, and we had no problem being seated right away.

4FD980B7-1A32-41FC-885B-8C94FA344AD1_zps1bw8v4xe.jpg

We were seated at just one table over from our previous visit (seemed to be a recurring theme on our trip). My company has a program where you can give and receive appreciation points, so I used up some of my saved points for a $50 Landry's gift card! So this meal is brought to you by my office. We also did this on our trip in June.

Anyways, we both started with two Diet Cokes and decided we were starving and we'd order an appetizer here.

4EECBF8F-5B4C-4531-9571-F6C038F47189_zpslsuhvrnn.jpg

The Diet Coke here is ridiculously expensive in my opinion, at $3.19.

I can't help but despise the paper straws here. Such a weird texture.

Justin and I decided to order pot stickers as an appetizer. We'd ordered the ahi tuna nachos in June (my choice) and while they were OUTSTANDING.. we thought we'd switch it up. Seriously, all of their appetizers sounded appealing to me.

Our pot stickers did not take too long to come out, maybe 10-15 minutes, which was fine with us. Once they arrived at our table we scarfed them up. We were starving!

940562C6-6FCC-4896-8E53-ED7173FB2DE8_zpsbbiqddv1.jpg

Pork Pot Stickers - Pan seared or steamed, with Sweet Thai chili dipping sauce, $8.99

These were good, but not as amazing as the ones at Ohana. We chose to have them pan seared. Justin and I both rated these a 3 - nothing too special but they were still pretty good.

This is where it just got kind of.. off with our service. And everyone around us, it seems, as well. We were seated next to a family of 6, a few kids and a few adults, and they were just getting their food when we arrived. They ate it in 20 minutes or so and asked for their check to be split into two.

The table next to them ordered appetizers and entrees with their meal. They sat down not long after we did. They did not get their entrees until we did and their appetizers never came. When they finally got their entrees, they were PO'ed to say the least. One of the actually sent their entree back and they finally brought out the apps.

We had a different server than these two tables but it seemed as if their server had totally disappeared. The manager ended up coming back and taking care of both of those tables. When their server finally returned it was just kind of awkward and you can tell the manager was going to give him a talking to once they got out of sight.

So that being said, their server went missing, and ours did too. Our entrees took a solid 25-30 minutes to come out AFTER our appetizer had already been delivered to us. Justin really liked the sweet and sour chicken last time, so he went with that again.

CFAA4AD7-2050-46C7-A5A5-EB2A636B12E6_zps3wuwyhzk.jpg

Sweet and Sour Chicken or Pork - tempura chicken or pork, ginger, garlic, bell peppers, pineapple with jasmine or brown rice $18.99

Justin substituted fried rice for the jasmine rice for a $2 upcharge.

I could NOT decide what I wanted.. kind of wanted mahi mahi.. really wanted the ahi tuna nachos for my entree.. thought the kobe beef burger sounded delicious.. steak and coconut shrimp also sounded good..

I love shrimp, so I went with the tempura shrimp!

A236A266-BE7F-4CA1-B638-76814903242F_zps1oqtseg1.jpg

Tempura Shrimp - chili plum sauce, coconut-ginger rice, stir fried vegetables $20.99

Like Justin, I also added fried rice instead of the coconut-ginger rice for $2 extra. In hindsight, I wanted fried rice but I think the coconut-ginger rice would've been delicious, too.

Our entrees were good! Justin likes his, but it's really not enough food for him. He doesn't like the veggies so I had some of those. The tempura shrimp was good, the batter was light and crispy, though it took a little effort getting the shrimp de-skewered and the tails off. The shrimp were quite big and there were plenty of them. I really loved the veggies that went along with this. The fried rice was good, but again I probably should've just had the coconut-ginger rice because I think the flavors would've went better together.

Justin would rate his entree a 3, because he doesn't think it's large enough and he says our Chinese place in town is just as good.

I would rate my entree a 3.5. My entree was good but it didn't stand out among the best things I had all week. I think I could've chosen better and I'll stick to my ahi tuna nachos next time. :rolleyes1

We *almost* got the cream cheese wontons for dessert, but our service was so slow that we were kind of ready to go. And we were going to be checking into AKL so we were super excited to get going!

Our total was somewhere around $60 after an AP discount of 10% (only off of the entrees), so not bad since we had a $50 gift card. And our server gave us Diet Cokes to go, so that was nice.

Overall, we do like it at Yak and Yeti. I hate to sound like a Debbie Downer, so please don't think we didn't have a good meal or that I'm a complainer haha! Just thought it was odd that our server (and the server of the table next to us) kept disappearing.

It was not our best meal but it definitely wasn't bad by any stretch. It took 90 minutes from the time we sat down to the time we left. I really loved our breakfast at Tusker House before though so I think next time we will switch it up. I definitely recommend Y&Y as a sit-down at Animal Kingdom, but maybe apps and dessert (and the drinks looked great too) are the way to go. I find the entrees slightly overpriced but that's just my opinion.

Up next.. carrot cake cookie love and Justin finally gets to eat at Pizza Planet.

Now I am craving calamari's, snapper w/ leek fondue and shrimp tempura (w/ veggies , they do look good to me haha) :rotfl:
Very nice review :earsboy:

I'm a little late joining in, but great reviews so far! It sounds like I would get along quite well with Justin haha - we seem to share a lot of the same opinions on food.

I also eat ketchup on my scrambled eggs, and I'm originally from New Brunswick (Canada), so it must be something to do with the east coast.

I look forward to seeing where else you eat on your trip!

Sorry your service was so scattered at Yak n Yeti. We've always experienced good service here so hopefully it isn't a trend. Your shrimp looks really good though, though not as good as the nachos (totally took your recco on my last trip and they were amazing)!!!!

What a great program your company has! Bad service aside at least you didn't have to pay much for it.

Loving your report and I have ketchup on loads of things but especially with a cooked breakfast :)

Thanks for the great reviews so far! I am really looking forward to trying Yak and Yeti this March!

We had great service the first time we ate there, the best we had all trip. So it was an oddity! The shrimp was definitely delicious but those nachos can't be beat ;) Glad you enjoyed them!

Love ketchup on a cooked breakfast! Thank you for reading. :teeth:

Thanks! We love Y&Y, even if the service was odd this time around. We have really enjoyed the food!

After checking in to Animal Kingdom Lodge (Kidani) and exploring a bit, we hopped on a bus a few hours later for Hollywood Studios. Our plans that night were to see the Osborne Lights and have dinner at 50's Prime Time at 7:50. Originally, we had this planned for a different day, with dinner at Hollywood Brown Derby, but we decided to switch it to Sunday to take advantage of EMH. Also, I didn't think Justin would really like HBD, so we switched it to 50's which was a first for him.

Once we got there, we were both pretty hungry and it was before 5 PM so we still had a solid 3+ hours before we'd be eating. I wanted something sweet (which I always do) so I decided I wanted to swing by Writers Stop for my snack.

Justin wasn't sure what he wanted. He thought he'd just grab a soft pretzel, but he decided he was hungrier than that, so he wanted something else.

Naturally we walked around for like a half an hour before we both decided exactly what we wanted.

We were closest to the Writers Stop so we stopped there first. It's a really cute little spot.

There was a bit of a line, but they move very quickly.

But what I REALLY wanted was just above that:

THE carrot cake cookie sandwich *swoon* :lovestruc

I had one of these on our trip in March and I LOVED IT. I also found a recipe online so I've made them at home. They're really not that hard, and they were just as delicious.

Pizza Planet!

We haven't eaten much QS at Hollywood Studios together (actually, we never had any before Pizza Planet), and Justin had been really wanting to eat here. Unfortunately we just haven't spent a ton of time at that park so we hadn't been able to try it yet. But today he decided was the day!

I remember begging my parents to eat here when we were little. My brothers and sister and I grew up with Toy Story (I was 6 when it came out) so it was so exciting to us to get to eat there. I don't remember the food being awful, but I was also probably like 9. So I haven't eaten here in quite a while.

BBE5AC6B-0229-49BC-B28B-DF9055145E9B_zpsddvmixaa.jpg

Justin decided the pizza alone would do, so we got in line and got ready to order.

Each of the meals comes with a Caesar Salad, but I told him that maybe if he just ordered the pizza it would be cheaper. We've read that before but I don't think we have ever just ordered the main item with no sides.

I also asked him to order me an ice water. So when we got up to the counter, he said he wanted "just a pepperoni pizza and an ice water" - instead the CM rang up the pepperoni pizza meal + a bottled water :(

Before Justin had even paid, I chimed in and said "oh sir we just wanted the pizza and an ice water" and he said "sorry I already put it through" so.. we just said whatever and paid for it, no big deal. I think our total was around $13. This was definitely an "un-magical" CM to say the least, seemed like a College Program kid who just was mad he got stuck working at Pizza Planet, haha. I think our total was around $13 here.

They had the seasonal specialty cupcake here! In case anyone is interested..

We found a seat and Justin finally got to try his Pizza Planet pizza!

And the verdict? Well, this is a guy who LOVES his pizza.. he will eat pepperoni pizza any chance he can get. And he rarely is disappointed. He said "I have had better pizza at a gas station in West Virginia." So folks, there you have it. Pizza Planet disappointment. I know plenty of people don't like it - but then again, it is just quick service pizza.

I tried it as well and I agreed that it wasn't the best pizza ever, but honestly I didn't hate it. For quick service pizza I didn't think it was horrible. It was clearly frozen Digorno pizza, which I happen to usually love so I was happy about that haha.

He ate the salad, happily, and said it wasn't too bad. I had a taste and I agreed. We are both Caesar salad lovers - it's pretty hard to mess it up. The lettuce wasn't soggy or anything and it was perfectly acceptable.

Justin rated the pizza a 1. I gave it a 2.5 because it wasn't amazing but it also wasn't awful.

We both rated the salad a 2.

I ate about 1/4 of my carrot cake cookie here because I didn't want to spoil my appetite. I rate that a 4.5 because it is nearly perfect. I just love it! I saved the rest of it and put it in the fridge in our room and ate it for breakfast over the next few days. :thumbsup2

If you're looking for a quick meal, and you have kids that would enjoy the fact that they're eating at Pizza Planet, I see nothing wrong with it.

After that, we found a spot for the Osborne Lights and waited for them to start. We ran over to Fantasmic after and were able to catch the show that started at 7 pm (I think!?) - so I was happy about that because in the last 3 trips I had not seen Fantasmic!

The lights were FANTASTIC and I'm so glad we were able to see them for the first and last time!

Coming up next.. the waitress gets sassy with Justin at 50's Prime Time (and he gives me quite the stare).
