One would think that I would know what's in my carry on bag...and what shouldn't be in there. Sadly, not the case. I had just a carry on bag for my short trip to Scotland last weekend. Took the train up from London, but flew Ryanair back...that's a whole story in itself!!! I got to security at Edinburgh Intl. But, as I watched everyone else's bags go through, mine got put on a different belt. I watched as security people walked over to those 'different bags', grab one, hold it up and the owner then stepped forward to the counter. Well....I waited 15 mins until mine came up. The agent asked me if I had anything sharp in my bag. 'No, nothing sharp in there when I packed a few hours ago' was my response. As he opened my bag, pulled out a gallon zip-loc bag, and withdrew a regular pair of scissors, I wanted to crawl away!!!! He smiled at me and asked if I knew how those had gotten into my sealed baggie!!! They were in the baggie that I normally have in my checked luggage, with powder and such in it! Completely forgot the scissors in there!!!! So, Edinburgh has my scissors, I have my embarrassment!!!!
Even those well versed in travel can make mistakes!!! I stood there, thinking about all those posters who jump all over people when they make a simple mistake!!! Yep, that was me that morning! Stupid me!!!

oh boy! hope the rest of your trip was smooth! i wanted to thank you for all of your advice. our trip last week was great! we saved alot of time by having an idea of how to get places and how much time to allot. so thank you very much!! i've had tsa pull me to the side once. he asked how many ppl i was with, i told him. he held up all my travel sized shampoos and conditioners and said do you really need all this?!! i admit, i had a lot!! i use one little bottle just on one shower alone for myself. he laughed and said ok, i've been more careful how much i bring now.

Yes, it was a fun trip. Got to see a lot of areas I've never visited before!!!
I'm thrilled you got good, usable info here!!!! Yay for us!!!! And I've had some TSA people who were hysterical!!! There was the time I had my 13 y/o dd's leftover birthday cake in my carry on bag. I had paid over $100 for it at the Grand Floridian...it was her 13th, so kind of special. We ate only 1/4 of it, so brought it back with us. The GF people packed it so well, it fit easily in my bag. So, when I got to security, that bag kept going back and forth, through the scanner. The TSA worked called some other workers over to check it out. They finally asked me if I had a wheel of cheese in my bag!!!!! They were quite amused by my cake!!!!

LOL! Happened to me last year. We traveled with just carryons for the first time last year. Decided last minute to throw my nail clippers into my bag. Never thought about the 1 inch "knife" and nail file in the leather case. :sad2: Yep, a 1 inch duller than dull piece of metal shaped like a knife with a rounded tip got our bag kicked off too. The TSA agent was very nice, we were mortified. They kept the case but I was able
to keep the clippers. Happens to the best of us!!!:goodvibes

We had an uncomfortable encounter with TSA when returning from LA after a trip to DLR. DH had bought me a travel cane while we were there. It broke down and unscrewed into 4 or 5 smaller sections so it could be easily packed in a carry on. Perfect, right?. So my carry-on goes through the scanner and suddenly half a dozen security guys materialize. The agent doing the scanning looks at me very seriously, shows me the scan image, and asks me to explain the items that look like a bundle of dynamite sticks!!!!! I was horrified. But they all chuckled when they opened the bag and took out the pieces of cane. Needless to say, that cane hasn't seen the inside of an airport since.

Don't worry, it happens. My daughter is an experienced international traveller and on one of her trips she had her carryon bag, a largish purse/satchel kind of thing and she got the same routine. They found her Swiss Army knife at the bottom of one of the pockets. Fortunately I was still there and was able to take it home for her to collect later. The next day on Facebook she said,"I thought I'd lost my Swiss Army knife for good...apparently airport security had no trouble finding it!"

Welcome back Diane! We've pretty much behaved ourselves in your absence. ;)

I've made similar silly moves at bag check. I'll typically grab a small bottle of water during my travels and stick it in the side pocket of my carryon. Sometimes when I come home, I totally forget that the little bottle is in there (its shorter than the pocket so its not noticeable) and then on my next trip to the airport wind up being embarrassed when the scanner picks it up.

lol!!! you bad, bad girl!!! (I once had a cigarette lighter in the pocket of my jacket.. oops

our last trip we were pulled aside at Ohare. our carry one needed to be checked out..I don't know what our link of summer sausage looked like to their exray machines, but the TSA gal was handling it! lol

Even a mod can mix up the baggies between the bags... that's one I've done too... and I will never ever take a roll of quarters for the laundry again.

Don't get me started on the time I had an M&M container (those little round tube thingies) full of change for pressed pennies! It slipped into a rip in the lining of my carry on bag!!!! It was chaos and mayhem at that TSA area!!!! I felt like an idiot.....it kept showing on the scanner but no one could find it until they finally held the bag up and shook it out!!!! No more of those in my bag either!!!

The first time I ever flew (I was about 12) was about a week after we had a surprise 80th birthday party for my grandmother. My backpack went through the xray machine and they pulled it aside and started digging in it. My sister (about 20 years older than me and extremely paranoid about EVERYTHING) was like "what the heck do you have in your bag?". Then the security person (I think before they were called TSA) pulled out the scissors with an 8" blade. I thought my sister was going to die right there. Security was like "we just wanted to see how big the blades are" and shoved the scissors back into my bag and waved us on. LOL--my how things have changed.

We flew to Vegas about 13 years ago and my husband had made a charger for his PDA (this is long before portable chargers). It consisted of a black box that held 8 D cell batteries and some wires that connected everything together. Sure enough, security pulled the bag aside and pulled the homemade charger out to take a look at it. My husband explained what it was and showed them how it worked and they were OK with it. I was sure they were going to take him to a locked room and interrogate him.

Not exactly the same, but at LAX I was heading through security with an umbrella in my bag (enroute to MCO) and the TSA agent stopped me and pulled it out of the bag because she couldn't figure out what it was on the scanner. Only in California. :rotfl2:

We'd been in France for 10 nights- 5 in the Loire Valley, visiting castles and wineries, and 5 nights in Paris. I got stopped trying to board. The corkscrew that I'd purchased at our first winery was still in an outside pocket of my backpack. I'd totally forgotten about it once we got to Paris. It's still in France...

My personal blunder was an oval belt buckle -- apparently looks just like a grenade under X-ray! OOPSIES!

I had a problem going through security in Paris when we changed planes. DH had a wheelchair escort (it was after his hip surgery) so they took us through a side screening area where we were the only people around. The security screeners kept asking me if I had canned meat in my carry on. Couldn't figure out what they were talking about. They opened my bag and pulled out a small band-aid type tin that had my emergency sewing kit in it. Had a good laugh about it when they opened it and found various small spools of thread
The funniest experience was going through security at the Coleseum in Rome. DH normally packs a small knife in our checked luggage. He usually carries it on his person when walking around unfamiliar areas. He forgot to take it out of his pocket when our private tour got to the Coleseum and security noticed it. They asked him about it and he volunteered to bring it back to the vehicle. They told him to give it to me and told me to put it in my bag. I guess I must look pretty trustworthy.

Well, I made it to LAX with no issues. Fingers crossed my flight to MCO next week is issue-free as well.
