I did the Alaska cruise twice, June 1, 2015 and late July 2011. It was a lot colder during the early June cruise, especially at Tracy arm- it was in the 50's so we had to pack colder weather gear that we did not need in July. As for distance from the glacier it's hard to tell because it was so cold and windy that we only stayed outside for a short time in June. We didn't use the pool at all (no one really did) in June because it was so cold, whereas the pool did get pretty crowded in July. Additionally, in June it was rainy almost every day. Lastly in early June, the salmon isn't running and there were no bear tours (they start in mid July). We saw a bear on the side of the road by the ship in July.
The boat felt less crowded in early June and I didn't mind the rain and cold much since it was our second Alaska cruise but overall, July is probably a better month to cruise to Alaska.
