Book w/ one set of points, then switch?

We are planning a June 2016 DVC vacation. We own at Beach Club and would like to stay there for part of our trip, but we would like to use our Saratoga points for the trip. Can we book the Beach Club now using those points, then cancel and switch to Saratoga points if the same reservation is available when the 7th month window opens next Thursday? Thanks for any help!

We are hoping to book 3 nights in a 1 bedroom at BCV and 2 nights in a standard studio at PVB for June 26-30.

If the same is available at 7 months, you can use any other resort points to book. Then you are free to cancel your res with the BCV points.

I first thought your question was 'can I book with BCV at 11 months and then when the 7 month mark arrives, call MS and have them change the points used to the SSR membership'. That is a question I would be curious to know.

Absolutely not. This is taking advantage of the 11 month window. No need to buy the more expensive resorts if this was allowed.

If there is BCV availability at 7 months, MS can swap the SSR points for the BCV points. You keep the same reservation number.

Keep in mind the BCV points used to book the original reservation will have to be used that use year and cannot be banked. That's my understanding.

I have never heard this before . . . and, no disrespect, I don't think that's true.

As long as you haven't passed your banking deadline, you can still bank them (unless they were already banked or they were borrowed).

Are you sure? I thought once you use them for a resie they are no longer bankable points. I might be thinking about booking at Disney collection resorts then cancelling but I know there's a rule like that. Thanks

I think if you use that if you use them to book something other than DVC and cancel you are correct as the points are no longer avail to book DVC rooms and therefore couldn't be banked. When you book anything other than a DVC room you are essentially trading out of the DVC system and disney then uses the points you gave up to book cash reservations to "pay" for your trade.

At 7 months out, you can switch points in the reservation from home resort to another as long as the reservation you have is independently available when you want to switch , i.e., available separate from the particular reservation you already have. You can only do that by calling MS. If you want to do it online before 9 a.m. 7 months out, you would need to do a new reservation and cancel the original one.

The returned BCV points retain the status they had when put into the original reservation -- current use year points return as current use year points and can be banked as long as you are not beyond the banking deadline at the time of the switch, but any points that were already banked or borrowed when put into the original reservation return as banked or borrowed points that need to be used before the end of the use year.

As to what you are seeking and likelihood, PVB is almost certain to be open at 7 months out. For making the point switch, probably BCV 1BR will also be open at 7 months out but some risk otherwise both because last week of June and through July 5 is somewhat busier for BCV than many other summer dates and you also face the issue that a number of rooms will be designated as out of service because of the refurb that is taking place next year.

Why would the reservation have to be independently available? If I cancel my reservation with BCV (this is just an example) points, wouldn't those days become instantly available to book with points from another contract?

Not necessarily. The room could be pulled from inventory and matched with an existing waitlist and you could lose the entire reservation or a few days of it. It's not a risk I would ever consider taking.

Because there could be waitlists having priority over your reserving with the SSR points, they do not allow the switch if the system is showing the room category as full for any nights you want to keep. Since they leave your reservation untouched until after the check for availability is made, your orginal reservation is still counted towards whether the rooms are full by the system when the check is made. If you could just switch points because you are making your own room open, then one could alsways reserve with home resort points at 11 months out and then switch to other points at 7.

I would agree with the theme above. However, there are a couple of other options and nuances. If ANY of the nights are available, you could book with the SSR points and potentially cancel the corresponding BCV point days. This can be problematic for days that are during the middle of the stay but it is possible. You can also take advantage of the wait list for any days you can't get right at the 7 month window subject to the max of 2 wait lists at one time. In general it's best not to book a 2 Queen 2 BR for this situation as it's less likely to be available. One can also cancel and try to rebook though this can be risky to very risky. If one has enough points, you can also book a duplicate for the days you want 11 months out at BCV with the SSR and try the cancel/rebook with the SSR points.

I did this with our reservation this year. Booked thanksgiving weekend at VGF with vgf points at 11 months. At 7 month mark I called ms and switched the reservation to sSr points. VGF was fully booked at the time, and the agent said it was no problem, could easily be done.

Not sure if this was changed recently, but in April 2015 was doable.

That was an untrained rep. It's up to the CM to prohibit the transaction. It's not prohibited by the implementation of the system, but by rule enforced by the CM's.
