Inexperienced Flyer

We are seasoned travelers, but sometimes, depending on exact circumstances and what airport we're in, 2 hours is just barely enough time, with no time for getting decent food or even a coffee.

This is us nowadays, too. I'll usually book a connecting flight with a 2-2 1/2 h layover, just for comfort's sake. If our first flight is 30 m or even 1 h late we're still good in most cases. Admittedly, I will book shorter connections on routes and terminals I know really well, but never if my connecting flight is the last one of the day, just to be sure. Stuff happens. Considering where we live and where we often travel to, it's a whole day gone for travel, so an hour or even three more really doesn't matter much at the end of the day.

The fall back (and yes, I think we'll probably suck it up and do EBCI) for if we're separated is that DH will sit with the 5 year old and the teen and I (and our emotional baggage) will sit together and talk each other through our anxiety.

The bold made me smile. I understand completely, I need medication to fly. Definately spend the $ to board early. I know its sometimes emotionally hard to spend a small amount that is seperated from the large cost but I think its a must.

You're flying with 3 people who will have mental/emotional issues on the plane. This qualifies you for preboarding on each leg (not an opinion- my son is on the spectrum with similar sensory & anxiety issues, & when I asked SW management they recommended I preboard him). When you check in, tell them that your party needs preboarding because you need (not want) to sit together to keep everyone calm, and you need extra time to get seated in relative peace before everyone else on the plane begins to board. In terms of boarding options, preboarding is the best solution not only for you, but also for the other passengers and the crew, in that is gives the greatest likelihood that everyone in your group will stay calm throughout the flight.

You don't have to give any reason when you request preboarding. Fewer words are better.
