ABD Costs for Solo Travelers

Sorry if this should have gone in the Solo travelers sections, but I didn't see any threads about ABD there.

I've read in a few of the comments on the ABD trip reports threads that solo travelers are charged 40%-50% more than couples/families because of they are not sharing the cost of the rooms. I was wondering if that percentage is from the totally of the price of the entire trip or just from the lodging portion of the cost?

Thanks for your help.

The vast majority of travel companies and cruise lines charge a single supplement.

It's usually between 150% and 200% of the per person double occupancy fare.

There are companies that do offer departures where the single supplement is waived, but the dates and itineraries are limited and with trips that are cruises , stateroom choice (category) is severely limited.

DCL and ABD both charge a single supplement.

As with most things in life....there are choices.

There are other theme parks in the world, but there are folks willing to pay the price of visiting Disney World.

This is true of ocean cruising, river cruising and guided tours as well.

If price is the major concern, there are other options. Disney is expensive across the board.

For those that see the value in traveling with Disney...the price is worth it.

Even as I have posted before ABD does not offer triples on some of their trips instead a double priced room with a single supplement for the second room. Expensive is one thing....ridiculous pricing is another.

I realize that ABD has angered you, but this is misleading.

ABD River Cruises offers triples and quads. The ships have won awards prior to the first sailing because of this. The vast majority of river cruises offer staterooms for two guests only.

The majority of ABD trips offer triples and quads and where quads are not available, guests are offered two rooms and quad pricing. The exception to this rule are Norway and Scotland. On those Adventures, the hotels will allow triples when the third guest is a child. If the third guest is an adult, two rooms would be required. This in not an ABD policy, but a policy of the hotels themselves.

DCL offers triples and quads.

................a 14 yr. old is an "adult"? Funny a 14 yr. old is not allowed to stay alone in a single room......and if you book a triple room on your own there is no requirement about age of occupants by the hotel I spoke with in Norway.......something doesn't "jive'........

A 14 year old is an adult in Italy, Greece and Walt Disney World as well.

I'm not certain what hotel you contacted, but I have stated the policy at the hotel used by ABD.

Thanks. That helps a lot with my planning.
PoohBelle (I love your name by the way - two of my favorite characters too!), it is a tough decision to make based on price if you're traveling solo. I choose to travel with ABD and DCL even with the single supplement b/c I love traveling with Disney. I feel comfortable and safe with them, which is important to me when I'm in a foreign country. And I'm not sure I'd cruise any other line b/c part of why I cruise is b/c it's Disney, and I love the overall atmosphere on the ships. That said, I have decided to tour San Francisco on my own instead of with ABD b/c of the cost. I'm sure I'll miss it, but for a 3-day trip that I was going to have to come in at least a day early for, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Good luck with your planning!

Thanks for the compliment and sharing your thoughts on solo traveling with Disney.
Obviously, I haven't been on am ABD yet or a Disney cruise, but from what I have read they are experience. I will try to convince some one to go with me, but I don't want to miss out on these adventures. I understand why the have to charge more because increase the charge per person. I know it might take me a bit longer to save up, but I think the superior service and the assurance of safety will make it work it, at least for me.

I can see why you might pass on the SF trip. I would have to look more into what is offered in the domestic trips to see if I thought they're worth the price.

San Francisco is very close to my hometown and one of my favorite places! I hope you have a great trip.

I second the love for solo traveling with ABD. I find it well worth the premium. However, I go with the trip that looks best. IMO, disney creates the best itineraries. That's my main reason for paying the cost.

ABD has very recently changed their policy for all Adventures...including Scotland and Norway.

If a party of three books and a triple room is not available, they will be booked into a single and double at the triple rate.

The guest in the room by themselves will no longer be required to pay a single supplement.

There is no policy change for guests traveling solo.

.............. a double and a single?...............so much for " family trip"...................

Again, policies in certain countries and certain hotels preclude accommodating 3 adults in a room.

In many cases, parties of four get two double rooms.

If this doesn't work for you, there are other options.

Oh that is great news! Thanks for sharing. My mom was hoping to come with us to China in a couple of years but the single supplement would have been cost prohibitive if there wasn't a triple room available.

Quick question, never done ABD... Are the prices listed on their site per person or is that for a couple? (Is the "Adult's" price, per person?)

The prices listed are per person based on double occupancy.

Dreams Unlimited Travel offers a booking discount based on the price of your Adventure.

You can find that here:

Thanks Kevin! (This post was actually as a result of us just watching the ABD episode of the DUL Travel podcast) We're doing 3 more cruises this year but we're thinking about doing our first ABD next year. (Really have enjoyed the new DUL Travel show btw, thanks a lot!)

I wish the podcast only trips would reduce the single traveller cost a little. I'd love to join the October Backstage Magic, but as a recently separated single the extra cost is difficult to handle. I did BSM with my (soon-to-be-ex) husband in June last year and would so love to do that tour again!
