Spiderman coming to Disneyland

I just saw that Spiderman will be coming to Disneyland. On a recent show (Universal episode I believe) they were talking about the issue with Disney owning Marvel but Universal Orlando having the Florida themepark rights to certain characters, like Spiderman. Pete was saying he thinks it's only a matter of time before Universal figures out that they are advertising for the competition. I wonder if this move will make Universal more likely to relinquish the rights they have. It is kind of confusing if in California Spiderman is a Disney property but in Florida it's a Universal one.

If that were the case, I couldn't imagine universal spending all the money on redoing hulk.

In all honesty, I would think that Disney is the one advertising for the competition. Personally, I wouldn't go to a theme park and see hulk coaster and think "gee, better go watch that movie now"
But I would think "that hulk movie was pretty awesome, and look! Universal has a hulk themed ride! Maybe I'll add a couple days at UOR to my WDW trip"

Good point, Jes. It can work both ways. There will be people who see the attraction and then go watch the movies, too. So ride The Hulk and come home and buy The Avengers DVDs.

I would like to see something Marvel at Wdw but that being said as long as universal keep the super heros section updated and fresh then I'm all good with that.

Marvel had licensed some of the characters prior to their acquisition by Disney. But the licensing agreements had terms and limitations, including some geographical limitations. So that its possible that Disney can use the characters in certain ways in Disneyland that they would not be allowed to in Disney world.

If I recall correctly there was georgraphical limitations with the Hulk Coaster in that Marvel agreed to limitations on using the character elsewhere on the east coast of the country and even greater restrictions within the Orlando area.

I'd love to hear a segment dedicated to this agreement/contract and it's limitations (doesn't have to be a full hour segment, but a decent length add on to a news show) and get Jack to explain his understanding of it (@jcb )

Universal has that theme/entertainment park rights to all superheroes (and their related families represented in Islands of Adventure) east of the Mississippi river. Thus Disney cannot use those families of characters in any attraction or advertising in parks in Florida. The families that Universal has the rights too are Hulk (and Avengers by extension), Storm (and X-men), Doctor Doom (and Fantastic Four), and Spiderman. Spiderman is the tricky one since there is debate over what is considered his "family". The only Marvel characters we have seen in park are those of Guardians of the Galaxy which there was no logical way Universal could of challenged that.

Awhile back I was hypothesizing on whether Marvel could of been introduced into DisneyQuest. The answer was no, since the single ticket nature and Disney's own advertising placed DisneyQuest as a theme park. As is evident by the store in Downtown Disney/Disney Springs West Side Disney is able to use them in stores and other non ticketed venues.

As for Spiderman I think this is a product of the deal signed between Sony and Disney recently to work jointly on Spiderman movies. Now that Disney has a hand in it again, they probably feel more comfortable using him.

So how is it that the monorail had an Avengers skin?
That was exactly why the skin was only on the Magic Kingdom loop and not the Epcot loop. The Epcot monorail travels through the theme park, so a skin would have been a violation.
