We had our first Poly stay this Sept 9-19 after scouring the boards for information on construction, best room locations, and entertainment. It was definitely memorable for many reasons. Not that we didn't enjoy the trip, but we most likely will not be back to the Poly. I mean, we really did have a good trip, and I'm not a big complainer, but there were just too many things that happened that you would not expect at a so-called deluxe resort:

First, the good:

- Beautiful resort
- Great central location for getting to the parks
- Tonga toast rules
- Gorgeous lobby
- Great shopping
- Construction was a non-issue, other than the giant hole where the quiet pool should be
- Trader Sam's was awesome, even for non-drinkers like us

Now, the not-so-good:

- I could have fashioned a small toupee with all of the hair I found floating in the pool.
- Couldn't check the hot tub because it was broken most days we were there.
- Every night at 1am, from Tuvalu 1st floor, we hear those loud laundry carts making a racket along the cobblestone paths along the boat dock. You're telling me they can't do that during the day? It was louder than the fireworks.
- Original room assignment was 3rd floor Aotearoa, in the room directly across from both the ice machine and elevator (I know, someone's gotta stay there, but for that price, it wasn't gonna be me). Got switched to Tuvalu first floor, room right by the outside door. There was no carpeting on the floor outside the door, and the door across from us looked like a storage closet, but then we saw people coming out of it. Come to find out, it was another guest room, but there was no number on the wall, just a worn-out spot where a number used to be.
- Polynesian lost our Garden Grocer order. I think it was delivered to our old room after we switched. Had to get another order, but not til the next morning. GG gave us the exact time of delivery, and the exact location in the storeroom when the order was placed. Bell services took be back there to look for it, but it was gone. Thankfully, the Poly manager helped us out with supplies for that night.
- When attempting to open a door on the bedside table, the door literally fell off. No joke.
- Housekeeping, without fail, was cleaning our room at the exact time we returned from the park to rest. Had to wait an extra half hour in the lobby until they were done.
- The monorail was down (unscheduled, not the scheduled late start printed on the weekly times sheet) in the morning many days and no one could give any answers about the buses or boats to compensate for the monorail not running. You couldn't get a straight answer from anyone. Ended up high-tailing it to the TTC to barely make rope drop at EP.
- Ohana was just dreadful. Chicken was lukewarm dark thigh meat, chewy and grizzled. Steak was cooked very inconsistently, with a weel-done piece first, then the next piece was beyond rare. I filled up on chicken wings and noodles. Felt like college again.

Most of these things (room, Garden Grocer, broken door, laundry carts, etc) seemed to set the tone for the whole trip and it felt like we spent the rest of our time trying to dig out of a hole. I will say the Poly staff was very gracious and understanding when we presented our problems to them. We even got a complimentary room service delivery of pineapple, chocolate, and sparkling cider with an apology note. Quite unexpected, but nice.

You can't control things like the weather, park hours, loud guests above you, or things like that. But every issue we had with the Polynesian was unnecessary to have to deal with. A lot of attention to detail is lacking there. I wonder if they're just trying so hard to finish up the multitude of projects that some loose ends are being missed.

We've had so many good trips to Disney before, so I guess we were due for one that didn't quite measure up. Some days you're the pigeon, other days you're the statue. The Poly was just OK, but for my money, not worth it.

Wow. Thanks for the detailed review, and sorry that things weren't as good as they could have been.

A lot of what you said kind of mirrors our stay at Beach Club last year. We had a CLOSET door fall off when we opened it....the room and walls were very worn and scuffed (a little more than scuffed). We encountered a gigantic roach in our room. There was an actual fire at the resorts in the middle of the night which meant everyone out and in their Jammie's in the middle of the night....just a lot of little things that together made it quite annoying.

Then....when we stayed at the CR, the monorail was an issue for us too. It was down one morning (not scheduled), they just disabled the elevator and had gates on the escalator, but when we went down to the bus area, the CM INSISTED that the monorail was working. After about 2 or 3 walks back and forth from the 4th floor to the bus area! we were finally told to get on a TTC bus and catch a bus to Epcot from there. We barely made our ADR that morning.

There are so many things that could be run slightly better to make the experience smoother.

That being said, we have shortened next years stay to 4 nights and are doing a Disney cruise in conjunction with our stay. We are hoping to find that detail to attention that we used to count on at the resorts.

The broken hot tub and inconsistent monorail info. would have really bothered me. But lots of hair floating in the pool? Yuck! What's up with that? I have read other reports of this too.

Thanks for your honest review. This gives me some things to think about as I'm starting to plan next summer's trip.

We stayed there this year from Sept 5-10 and it was magical. Yes, the hot tub was not available everyday. But I did not see any hair in the pool, and O'Hana was delicious as usual. I'm sorry your experience was not the same. I think every hotel/restaurant has good days and bad. I almost wish we would have had a rotten experience, so I wouldn't want to return so badly :rotfl2:. I would have been equally disappointed for the money, had we experienced the same things on our trip. Hope your next trip makes up for the disappointment this time around.

Maybe I'm delusional, but I feel like a lot of these issues were not happening (or at least not happening as frequently 10 years ago...at any resort, not just Polynesian. Everyone's opinion is different, but I firmly believe that Disney has done everything in its power to keep all the parks, all the restaurants, all the stores, and all the rooms packed at all times, and service has suffered because of it. We have a local restaurant that opened modestly, and quickly became popular with locals. They immediately, shut down for renovations, where the doubled (maybe tripled) the size of the bar, and bought the property next door to add even more tables. The problem is, now they are always packed, all the time, and they just don't have the staff on the floor and in the kitchen to handle a packed restaurant all the time. We rarely go here anymore, and it's a shame, as it used to be a great place! I apply the same scenario to Disney. There are people there working hard, and who really want to make the experience magical for each and every guest, but there's simply too many guests, and too few minutes in the day.

Just my theory.

I'm sorry your Polynesian experience was less than magical. We really thought at first that we were monorail people. Period.

Then we met the Epcot Loop. And I'll just say this...the walkway to Epcot and DHS is never broken down. pirate:

Thanks for your honest trip report. Sorry that things didn't go as smoothly as it should have at the Poly. To pay as much as you did, you would expect better service. Live and learn. I hope you had a good time despite the problems.

I totally agree. We were there relatively the same time (09/11 - 09/22) My biggest issue was the crowds at the GHC and pool all the time. I was directly facing construction, but, like you said, it was a non issue. Parking was a big issue. Luckily we rented a car because the monorail started late, or stopped functioning often. The Epcot monorail was down for a couple of days at the beginning of our trip. We walked to the resort monorail, but it wasnt open yet, then walked over to the TTC only to find out the Epcot monorail wasnt working, so then we were directed to a bus area with a line of about 200, but still had to wait for the buses to start running. We caught the 3rd bus, standing room only. I just got out of a cast 10 days prior to the trip (broken hand) and it was hard for me to hold on. Everyone and their mother takes the resort monorail to the TTC after wishes, as its a slightly smaller line than the express. Waits go get on the resort monorail were incredibly long. We also waited 45 minutes one night for a ferry from the Contemporary to Ft Wilderness.

Mousekeeping never came to our room 2 of the days (I really didnt care, Im very neat and always make the beds anyway. Cant leave the room without beds being made. Ick!! )

We had a WONDERFUL trip, but I know I would have had just as good of a time, if not slightly better, if I picked another resort. I vowed in 2010 I would not go back there, but I had heard they gated the pool area and added extra parking, so I thought things would get better. Fact is, its a very popular resort for non guests (dining/pool/new bar/look around/Wishes watching/dinner show etc..etc..) and things will never change. We stayed 12 days compared to the usual week I did when I was younger, so we could spend more time relaxing and not being at a park morning noon and night. There was not quiet place to relax there. Its was quieter/less people at Epcot at night than at the Poly. Hundreds of people everywhere!

The Contemporary or Beach Club/Yacht Club will be my choices going forward. Im due for another Wilderness Lodge stay too :) Went there for dinner at Artist Point and was reminded of how gorgeous it really is (and much more reasonably priced).

I'm totally with you. We were there the last week of August and it was ok. Nothing great. It felt very crowded, the food at the resort was average at best. We also had the front of a drawer fall off when I went to open it. I liked our room location (Fiji first floor luau cove side) but got pretty tired of hearing the luau until 10:15 pm almost every night. I started making it a point to not go back to the room until it stopped. For the money paid, no one should have to do that.

That will be the end of monorail resorts for a while. I do prefer the EP resorts and the ability to walk to 2 parks and countless restaurants. It's so much more relaxing!

I'm surprised to hear it was so crowded over at the Poly, we were just in Disney World (staying at BWI) 8-18th and I felt like the resort wasn't very crowded at all, I guess their is a big difference between the Epcot and MK area resorts in capacity.

We did go over to the Poly one night for dinner and it didn't seem as crowded in/around Ohana's and in the shops as it normally does when we go (summer). Ohana's was fine for us, it seemed on par with what we normally experience sorry to hear it wasn't great for your family.

The room issues you had and the hair in the pool are what really stood out to me, those are awful things to contend with, yuck.

Sorry to hear you didn't love the Poly overall, I've stayed at the Poly in the past and want to again but reading some of the reviews lately have me a little scared. I'm starting to wonder if it's more crowded now than it used to be, I know it's always been popular but with all the recent work maybe it's even more popular for both guest and others coming over to visit.

It was very crowded especially in the lobby. With check in for Ohana and Spirit of Aloha all in one spot, combined with the usual traffic, it made it very difficult to find any personal space that wasn't already occupied by someone else.

Did you complain about any of these to the resort? You could still now. That hair in the pool thing is just gross and I've read others mention it. Obviously they've been having issues with the spa, but if the pool has that much hair in it, it makes you wonder what it's in there that you're not seeing. I remember someone else calling it "human soup." Ewww.

To the Poly's credit, they did comp the supplies and food for our first night after losing our GG order and also tried to make it right with regards the housekeeping and other issues. As far as the hair, I just tried not to swallow any. No sense making big issues with everything.

I agree about not making a big issue, but I'm wondering if they actually don't know it's a problem? That's hopefully something they'd want to fix. I'm glad they made good on the garden grocer issue.

I've seen several reports on the boards saying the same thing. Quite honestly, I was so tired of complaining that I had just given up at that point and just decided to make the best of things. So much had gone wrong, I just quit.

We left a few days before your arrival! We left 9/5. Thankfully had none of the issues you experienced. You prob should have stuck with first room, lol. We had 3 Rd floor Samoa near elevator end of hall. There was no room opposite us, just a big glass wall and outside stairs. But ice machine and elevator weren't far away. Never heard anything in room.
I've heard that pathway along Fiji can get loud. Another reason we prefer 3rd floor, is no kids above jumping!!

Our room was in good condition, except for the fridge that had a mini iceberg in the roof. So I phoned housekeeping and requested another one. When we returned to room a new one was there.

Never saw hair in pool. Housekeeping was great, we always take a mid day break, and room was always done when we returned. I guess it depends on where in the route your room is. I think ours was always done in the morning. But i believe you can phone housekeeping to request when you want housekeeping. Morning or afternoon?
Ah, the hot tub, lol!! It was working, sort of while we were there, only one side had jets!

I hope at some point you give Poly another try.

We were at Poly until Sept 5. Only time lobby was crowded was when groups for Spirit of Aloha were gathering, and with 2 popular restaurants at the resort for dinner. But we've experienced dinner crowds (or. Breakfast) at other deluxe resorts too. Most that have popular TS. Notably GF & BC.

We left a few days before your arrival! We left 9/5. T

We checked out the same day. We were in 3rd floor Aotearoa and loved our room. No hair in the pool, and we spent a lot of time in there. We didnt eat IN Ohana' but we had the room service Ohana' meal and it was fantastic! While we could see some construction and improvements happening it wasnt intrusive and there wasnt a noise issue. Our conclusion at the end was the opposite, we have a hard time thinking of staying anywhere else! The trip was a split stay with Beach Club and the Poly really won us over... next year we are going back for the whole week, and upgrading to Club Level.

We actually did request housekeeping come earlier. The day after that request we returned from the park at around 2pm and the room still hadn't been done. It's like they ignored us.
