Houston Police say one person is dead and another wounded after a shooting at a Texas Southern University student housing complex.

University spokesman Kendrick Callis said the shooting was reported around 11:30 a.m. Friday at University Courtyard Apartments on the edge of the Houston campus. Callis said the campus was placed on lockdown and classes were canceled for the rest of the day.

Houston Police tweeted early Friday afternoon that a possible suspect had been detained.

Police and emergency vehicles were at the scene, where there had been another shooting near the same housing complex just hours earlier.

The university has about 9,700 students.

I couldn't believe it when I read it either. So sad. I think the country is becoming increasingly numb to these things. They stay in the news for less and less time now before we move on to the next tragedy....

I'm not sure what that says about us as a society.

DD and I were texting a little while ago. She mentioned she was working on her schedule for spring semester. I said she should take all of her classes online. Unfortunately, I truly don't know what percentage of me was just joking and what percentage was serious. Doesn't seem like either shooting was related to mental illness.

I don't think this is necessarily a "crazed gunman on college campus" situation. Texas Southern has been reported as having the highest violent crime rate of any TX university. I wouldn't send a child of mine there.

Twice on one day- our world is nuts

Just like the other this does not appear to be random but parties who knew each other. Or at least were aiming for a particular individual. So not random violence but unfortunately stuff that goes on daily. I always tell friends if you actually how many times guns are shot in at least cities, you wouldn't lead the house.t

Most cities have something called shot spotter - google it

I would bet that shootings where they know each other have always happened as MickeySP said. The press is just all over this stuff now.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, the press has pretty good reason to be all over this stuff now. They group all school shootings by decade (K-12 through college, public, private, all shootings).

50's = 17
60's = 17
70's = 20
80's = 21
90's = 41
2000's = 44
2010's = 115 and we are only five years into the decade!
I'm happy the press is taking notice.

I didn't realize we had so much of this in this decade to be honest. That is a scary number.

So if the two parties know each other, then suddenly its not shocking? These are people shooting in broad daylight on a college campus, I find that horrifying no matter who was involved.

All crime is shocking, but the fact that a crime occurs at or near a college campus located in a high crime inner-city area is not shocking at all. Colleges are already magnets for criminals with a high density of "rich kids" walking around with no protection whatsoever. Put that environment smack in the middle of a high crime area and you'll be battling constant crime on the periphery of campus.

When I was at Temple University in the 80's, our campus police force (real armed cops with full law enforcement authority) was the 2nd largest police force in PA - only Philadelphia's force was larger. Sometime in the next decade, Pittsburgh's force finally surpassed Temple's.

Not sure what the answer is, but I know that at this point ignoring it really isn't much help.

Eventually, America is just going to say "Enough is Enough". I pray that it is soon.

Not to be too jaded, but it isn't shocking if you're used to hearing about the amount of crime coming out of Texas Southern. I think they had 3 shootings in one week. It is in Houston, one of the country's largest cities and the university has a reputation for a high crime rate. I wouldn't send a kid there on a full ride.
