I wasn't sure where to post this...hope it's okay....so we've been to WDW 8 times now with our kids and as much as we LOVE it...we are ready for a change. The problem is, I only know WDW! Well, we did go to Maui this past year...and that was great....considering going back...but what have been your favorite family vacation destinations?

I'm not a big fan of Mexico....but am open to just about everything else! I love the idea of an all inclusive, but also feel like none are "out of this world"...and most are in Mexico.

Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Yellowstone
Northern California
Scotland
Desert Southwest
Black Hills road trip
Wisconsin Dells
Universal/Sea World
Panama City Beach
D.C.
Branson
Disneyland/Universal Hollywood
Colorado/Utah

Loved many things about all of the above, but Yellowstone for me (both when I was a kid, and as an adult) is tops. And definitely not "after" WDW ;)

we like cruises. unpack once and stop and see different places all in one vacation!

When we do major road trips, we pack numerous small bags. Each contains one day's worth of clothes for each family member. There's a separate bag dedicated to toiletries/swimming suits, and a cooler. At each stop, we bring in only the toiletry bag, cooler (wheeled), and 1 day's worth of clothes. :)

  • Cape Cod is also really great in the summer (Chatham FTW)! Great beaches, good food and family friendly.
  • Akumal, Mexico - You won't find any all inclusive resorts here, but you can rent a house/villa. It's very quiet and the main beach is shallow really far out (aka good for kids). It's also really close to other really good beaches, cenotes (I really like this one), Playa del carmen, Tulum. But it's mostly a chill and not do much vacation
  • Any of the western park (Zion, Brice, Big Sur, Yellowstone etc...)
  • Skiing (I really like the feel of Steam Boat, it's been a while, but I remember it having sort of an isolated resort feel to it).
I'm sure there's more but that's all I've got right now.

The Smokey Mountains
Hilton Head SC/Savannah
Colorado
Branson
St Louis

-Cruises would be a good idea since they would have lots of activities and kids clubs for all ages.
-Lots of great all inclusives for families besides Mexico, check out Beaches resorts (or many others) almost every island has one.
-Renting a house along a beach, my friends recently did Destin, Fl with little ones.

My favourite non Disney holidays. UK, Japan, Australia, Eastern Canada and driving to my Aunt & Uncle's cabin on Sproat Lake. The US is international for us (we live in western Canada) and Disney is not any less expensive than travelling overseas for us.

We love Williamsburg, but I think you have to like historical to enjoy it. You have Busch Gardens, Water Country, Colonial, Jamestown, ghost tours and so much more. My kids always say they prefer it to Disney. I prefer Disney, but they don't.

Next best trip after Disney is road-tripping. I love seeing parts of the country I've never been to before and seeing landmarks and historical sites. I've been mapping out a roadtrip to Colonial Williamsburg for several years now, and hope to make it happen in 2016.

So I think it depends on how far you are willing to travel and what you like to do.... But we have enjoyed going up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and Newport, RI. We also like the Jersey Shore - Point Pleasant, Seaside or LBI. I think that we are debating France or Japan for our next trips... Try to incorporate some of the other Disney locations but both of those countries are very kid friendly! I also highly recommend Barcelona.

Disney will be the first place we go that will completely 'submerge' us into a place. We've always read up on places and planned things for each day. We really like to incorporate learning experiences with our trips. We really like to try to learn about the area we go to and our kids don't expect "fun" stuff (ie: being entertained constantly) when we go away. That being said, the following are the places we've enjoyed the most in the past couple of years...

We loved Alaska. It was a great education for the kids and there is SOOOOO much to see and do there. We went to Seward and saw the aquatic center and then did a short cruise around Resurrection Bay (whales, sea otters, sea lions, etc). There is an AWESOME restaurant there that serves the BEST crepes there. We also went to the Kenai Peninsula and fished for salmon (awesome experience). Went to Denali National Park (really, if you can, take the train from Anchorage to Denali.....unbelievable views!!!), rode the bus, saw Denali (Mt. McKinley), went to Anchorage and did shopping (on Sundays, there is an Inuit group that does native dances, music, etc.), went to a reindeer farm in the Mat-Su valley and learned about the reindeer and elk (got to feed and pet them both). Hiked on a glacier. Just soooo much to do. We will definitely be going back.

We also love Myrtle Beach, SC. We always rent a house when we go there. It's the Miniature Golf capitol of the world (seriously...over a couple hundred mini golf places!!). Dolly Parton has a pirate dinner theater place there that was really great. We toured some plantations there and also went to Greenbrook Gardens (seriously, an all day place). Of course, lots of beach time and pool time (we rent a house with a pool....always).

Niagara Falls is great. We just took the kids there in August. Kids under 12 don't need a passport to cross into Canada (adults do....check the dept of state's website for exact information on the kids). We showed the kids the St. Lawrence Seaway and how the lock system works. You can look up the times the ships are going through the locks and watch them. Eating at the Skylon Tower at the revolving restaurant was the kids' favorite thing about the entire trip.

Our all time favorite non-Disney trip has been a guided camping and kayaking trip on Jackson Lake by Oars. Their website offers lots of different family adventures all water based. The three day two night Jackson Lake kayaking adventure was perfect for us. The food the guides prepared was amazing, the scenery was spectacular, and my four year old had the time of his life along with his grandma who also joined us. After the trip we toured Yellowstone and stayed in all the historic lodges which was also fantastic. Check out www.oars.com I would travel with them again in an instant.

Santa Cruz

Catalina Island

Whale watching tours visiting other places
Yosemite
Lake Tahoe
San Francisco ( Alcatraz )

We like to go to an AI every-other-year to relax. We've gone to Beaches in Negril twice. Our girls LOVE it, and so do we :) It's hands down th ebest beach we've ever been to.
