How big a stickler is Air Canada with Carry-On luggage size

I haven't flown with them in ages. Since the advent of charging for checked bags, I'm sure more people are flying with individual Carry-on's as opposed to larger checked bags.

I have a carry on that is probably an inch taller and wider than AC's stated carry-on measurements.

do you think they'll force it as a checked bag?

Depending on how full the flight is, the airlines have become more and more particular about the size of carry on bags.

I would go into the flight expecting that you will have to gate-check the bag and hope for a pleasant surprise if you are allowed to bring it as a carry on.
 
They've gotten very strict. I flew to and from TO- SFO a couple of months ago. At both gates, everyone with a wheeled carry-on had to prove that it fit in the metal carry on size checker thingy. There was as LOOOONG line of unhappy people heading to the desk to gate check their bag (and pay the fee). Really glad I've got a soft duffle style carry on. So if your current size is over the limit, I'd recommend you go shopping for a new one
 
I flew them in August ans they measured and weighed my carry on and my daughters!!

yes... this is my experience too. Now that seats are packed tighter... there is less space in the overhead. If your carry-on's can't go under the seat.... it may be air mailed to the cargo area...

 


If you can, take your luggage to the airport to double check the size a few days before. Also invest in a luggage scale to avoid the stress. The first overweight charge avoided means the scale has paid for itself.

And the first overweight bag paid for at the gate will likely cost more than adding a 2nd bag in advance or at check-in online. For the price of our first overweight bag, we could have bought a 2nd cheap suitcase, paid for the 2nd bag and still would have saved ourselves $. We love our travel scale.
 
I'll be at the airport tonight picking MIL, so I'll check DD6 new suitcase (Carryon Heys Elsa spinner) in the bag check.
 
Yes and No. If you plan on checking in at the airport instead of online, then yes - they will weigh and measure your bags. On our flight in June, they were making everyone with a wheeled bag put it in the sizing thing and were given a special Air Canada sticker to put on the bag. We had duffle bags and were told they didn't need to be checked. Two weeks ago, we didn't see anyone have their bags checked for size, and no one had the stickers. They were, however, forcing people to gate check bags once the plane filled. They announced several times that the flight was full, and asked for volunteers to check their bags for free. The advised that if you were in boarding zones 4 or 5, you were at risk of having your bags taken and checked for you - without your permission. I didn't see this actually happen. There were 10 or so people who volunteered.

Had this exact same thing happen on my AC flight 2 weeks ago to Orlando.
 
the last three times that I have flown AC they ended up asking people to check their bags so there would be room in the cabin.

I just had to weigh in on this one. When we flew Air Canada in July (to the World), they were weighing and measuring carry-on bags at the check-in counter and then putting a tag, "Cabin Approved" or something like that on bags that they had checked. These tags were re-checked again at the gate when we were boarding. They are getting VERY strict with carry-on luggage! I've never seen so much attention paid to carry-on luggage. I agree with a previous poster that they seem to be more attentive to it when the flight is full. My solution is to take a knapsack that will easily fit underneath the seat in front of me. Flew AC last week from Montreal to Las Vegas - they measured and weighed my carry on. It was 3 oz over weight and she said "I'll let it go this time" and I took out my wallet and phone and told her she didn't need to worry ;)
 
xixo, I wonder what airline was caught on video, throwing the bags down into the bin?
