This is a great park and I've never had trouble with crowds. Just avoid the heat and rainy times and it will be a great trip. We went for Halloween in 2013 and it was great weather and a really pleasant trip. My son was only 15 months old at that point and there was a ton for him to do at Hong Kong Disneyland. The city itself is easily accessible and very nice and clean.

Tokyo park is unreal and that one is a must as long as you can make it work for a middle of the week stay because it gets crowded like you wouldn't believe. Hong Kong really packs a nice punch for a smaller park. It reminds me of Magic Kingdom from the early 90s with room to breath and reasonable wait times (I'm not sure I've waited for any ride longer than 20 minutes there).

If I'm still in Asia in the Spring, I'll probably look to get to Shanghai. Honestly, a trip to Tokyo is not unreasonable. There are direct flights for $1300 (roundtrip) or so. Use your rewards program and rack up miles on that trip and you can probably earn a few free domestic trips.

I am from the UK but what you say still stands, the flights cost a small fortune but if the exchange rate stays as it is at the moment it will make it all a lot more affordable. Fingers crossed!

People talk about Tokyo being expensive, but I didn't find it to be. You can get great food for a very reasonable price (not at Disney, obviously) and train transportation is extremely cheap. Other hotels on the monorail system like the Hilton Tokyo Bay or Sheraton run around $190 or less depending on when you want to go. I recently looked and Hilton was $149 for the last week of October.
