Running costumes

I'm probably going to hit up a group or two on Facebook as well, but have any men here done any face/body paint for running? Or any ladies who know men who have? I've come across one blog detailing some good paints and using some kind of setting spray, but for the purpose of our costume ideas I'm curious how the paints might work with facial hair. I'll eventually figure it out firsthand whenever testing things on a run but figure it can't hurt to send the question out into space here :)

I'd be pretty reluctant to do a full face painting for a race of any significant distance. The paint I've used in the past for non-running painting wasn't very breathable, and I imagine it'd be pretty uncomfortable to run and sweat in for a few hours.

I thought I would post some of my runDisney costumes...

At the WDW Marathon weekend 5K last year (also known as the coldest race known to man!!!) I ran as the Queen of Hearts. nobody really saw it though because I ended up with another layer over the top given it was so miserable out.

I then headed west for Star Wars weekend, I ran the 10K as Darth Vader...

I then backed up the half as Luke Skywalker

Haven't got a costume as yet for Wine & Dine, but I think i have now sorted the Jingle Jungle 5K

For Avengers I have two of my costumes sorted. For the 5K I am going to do Scarlet Witch

And then for the 10K, given it was named after Captain America, I thought that may be the way to go.

For the half, I think I might wear some regular black running gear I have that looks a lot like the Black Widow's outfit - as I know that will be comfortable.

Almost all of the costumes (except Jingle Jungle) above came from Etsy shops This Princess Runs and I Glow Running. both did a great job designing and making what I was looking for (everything above except one was a custom order) and the Star Wars ones were really comfortable, even for 13.1. Having a costume made from the right material to run in makes a huge difference.

If anyone has any great ideas for W&D I would love to hear them! At the moment it is looking like the race shirt and a sparkle skirt.

I love all of these! I've looked a lot at I Glow Running on Etsy. Her stuff is so cute. How do you like the quality of them? They seem pretty pricey, but I've been really tempted before to try her items.

Her stuff is really well made. She has made all of mine custom so they fit perfectly. I was nervous about paying so much for something I couldn't try on, but it was all good.

All of the skirts I have got from her have compression shorts sewn in underneath, which is a good touch. I was over the moon back in Jan in the Darth Vader outfit because I had a cold and the morning of the race I realised there was a hidden pocket in the compression shorts for my tissues, which saved the day. Because she uses active wear fabric I've never had any chaffing or problems in long races, which is a reality with cheaper fabrics.

Dopey Challenge costume update:
Thankfully my Stormtrooper armor (for the 5k) is listed as arriving before Christmas, so I'll have time to get it assembled. I have a friend who has said she will donate her Slave Leia to me for the full marathon (I told her she may not want it back after I've been in it for 26 miles). Still working out what I'm going to do for the Vader (10k) and Boba Fett(half marathon). I want them to look good, but I also don't want to die, either. :p

edit: I'm running the CASA Superhero Run this Sunday (5k) in a Rubies Supreme Darth Vader. If I feel I can handle it for a 10k afterwards, I may consider going that route, but I'd still need to work out logistics (and cost) of renting/transporting for a week.

I've not done face paint, so I'll likely do some testing on training runs beforehand. There was a pretty large group of runners for the past TOT runs that did skeleton themed painting on their faces, so I'm thinking they maybe found something that works alright. Hopefully anyway!

Looking for some feedback/advice as someone with no costume running experience and little to no sewing/costuming ability.

As I said earlier in this thread, I am planning on running the 5K leg of the Dopey Challenge as Eeyore as my first costume. I'm not super worried about this as I think I am just combining a hat with some similar colored and slightly altered sweats to make it running friendly. Any suggestions would still be welcome though.

The bigger question mark is my sister and I are now planning on doing the Half Marathon in costume with her running as Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph. I am considering running as either Ralph (the, relatively, easier choice) or Taffyta (the more memorable/less common choice). I am pretty sure I could put together a pretty good Ralph costume and, even though I'm not particularly tall, physically I bear a pretty decent resemblance to Ralph; so I think it would work nicely. On the other hand, if I could somehow figure out how to pull off the Taffyta costume. . .

I know that guys running at Disney in sparkle skirts, tutus, etc. is pretty commonplace, so I don't really want to put in the effort to just be another guy running in a pink skirt. So I guess my questions are a) which character? b) how likely am I to actually be able to put together a decent costume of that character?, c) Will running 13.1 miles in said costume be advised? and d) any suggestions as to where to look/how to begin assembling a decent costume (regardless of which character)?

Any and all answers/feedback for any questions (including those that are not explicitly stated) will be appreciated.

I think that Ralph and Vanellope would be my choice. Ralph would be an easier costume to pull off too and more comfortable to run in.

Just checking back in here to get motivation for my half marathon costume. I really need to start working on my costume. I've got my hat and some of the fabric but I've still got a lot of work to do.

I've got all my ideas for Dopey, going with sort of an extinct attraction or some part of the ride changed since opening theme for each. It's kind of fun doing non-characters for some, but attractions! Lots of stuff to do before then.

Thought I'd pop back in with my costumes from the DL half marathon weekend. Both were a complete success!

Jessica Rabbit for the 5k:

Mulan (as Ping) for the half:

I may come back and replace this photo when Mum orders her half marathon photo package.

Mum's outfit was Cri-kee inspired.

Yes! I am so happy you posted! I was trying to not be annoying, but I really wanted to know how everyone's DL weekend costumes went! You look so fabulous! The Mulan Ping is so spot on. And Jessica is amazing! Did you get any pictures in Toontown with it?!
How did everyone else's costumes go?
I'm knee deep in W&D ideas (probably just reusing Rapunzel- lol) and Avengers (three ALL NEW costumes- what am I thinking?)

I walked into a Spirit Halloween store to get some ideas,I have the Miami Beach Halloween half later in the month and that race has like 70% of the runners in costume,I still have no real clue as what to wear. They did have these cool Star Wars shirts and Storm Trooper,R2-D2 and Chewbacca winter beanies but I don't think I'll be able to wear those for Star Wars Darkside in April,if that race was January or February I would have gotten those for sure,of the shirts I liked a Storm Trooper one they had but the sizes were too small.

Aww thanks! Unfortunately the 5k didn't go through Toontown, so I didn't get an opportunity for any photos there. I also missed out on the photo opportunity with Mulan and Shan-Yu during the half (they swapped out with Cinderella and Lady Tremaine *after* I went past) Both costumes ended up being very comfortable and easy to run in (I didn't even notice my Mushu belt), so I was pretty happy with that :goodvibes

I actually really love the Sparkle Athletic skirts (or at least I love how they look and that you can wear whatever you want underneath), but there is no way to make them long enough for me :(
I have thought about buying two and trying to sew them together to see if that works, but that would just be a horrible thing to do to such a beautiful sparkly skirt.

I have been using Jalie Patterns - they make paper and PDF versions, but the half circle skirt is quick to make and you could easily add length. I made the skirt below with the half circle pattern and the top from a Jalie pattern for an asymetrical leotard that I modified into a tank top.

Ugh! Seriously. I'm out of ideas for Jingle Jungle.

This is a bad sign, right?
