Kinda freaking out - as our vacations always default to WDW, DL or DCL - but I feel we are missing out on seeing other stuff! I have cruised 3 other lines on short 2-3 day cruises out of Vancouver - weekend getaway ones, but never on RCI.

We have been so enticed by the Oasis class since they launched Oasis years ago - and now my daughter is 19, and not in the 'teen club' age - I just feel we need a ship with more to do together- not to mention I got a room on an amazing Canadian deal for $1500 less than Disney the same week.

So now I have tons of reading to do - lots to learn about the Allure! Can't wait- Jan 3 Eastern here we come!

Any amazing advice??

I got off the Oasis today. It was a great ship with tons of stuff to do!

You can book all of your dining reservations and show reservations through the television. The Ice Show is a MUST. As is the AquaTheatre. Both were incredibly impressive, even though I saw a different Ice Show on Freedom earlier this year. I hated Cats, but you will have Mamma Mia. It's a full length Broadway show, not a cut down version, with an intermission. We liked the balcony seats the best to watch the shows.

If you're a foodie then Chef's Table is a MUST. It was amazing food and a great atmosphere! It was $95 including the wine pairing. The only thing I didn't like is that it's in an area between the suite lounge and Coastal Kitchen (which was also great). IMO, Chops Grille wasn't worth the upcharge. YMMV. The gruyere tater tots were heaven though. 150 Central Park was pretty good. I'd pick that over Chops if you like the menu. Giovanni's Table is cheaper for lunch than dinner and has the exact same menu. The mushroom risotto was actually better than the one from Palo, and I am a risotto snob. If you're staying in a suite, Coastal Kitchen was excellent. Plus, free alcohol as you are in the suite lounge. ;)

Ice skating was okay, but I sucked at it. There are also way too many people as they let 50 onto the ice at the time. If you want to ice skate then go in the morning, as early as you can. Flowrider was AWESOME and didn't have long wait times for our whole cruise. The zip line never seemed to have a long wait but the idea just freaked me out so I didn't try that. The adult area (Solarium) is for 16+ and it's all the way forward of the forward elevators so there are no kids walking through! That will probably be nice with a 19 year old. :)

My only let down was that the staff on the cruise could be so unhelpful at times. There were very few crew throughout the week who actually went above and beyond and HELPED. There was a large Spanish speaking population on this cruise too, which always seems to make the crew less helpful. I'm sure it's a cultural thing but any of my cruises from Miami/SJ and now Port Everglades, the Spanish speaking cruisers always seem incredibly rude, like pushing to board elevators before anyone can get off, or trying to push past in line. I've experienced the same thing on Disney. Oh, and there was a lack of trivia events. I love my trivia.

Thanks! I keep 2nd guessing myself and thinking 'should I just book the sure thing (fantasy same week)' - I think what I am missing is the private island at the end of the cruise -that Castaway day is always so awesome -but I need to get out of the comfort zone!

My advice is to have fun! An acquaintance of mine loooooooooved her Allure cruise. Loved it!

I actually don't like having Castaway on the last night of the cruise. I much prefer a sea day. It gives you way more time to pack and it doesn't seem nearly as rushed.

we LOVED the allure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
loved loved loved loved loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we were in the same boat.
Kids were in need of more adult fun activities on the ship - which the allure is packed with.

We still love DCL, but we love Royal just as much!!! :)

Congrats on your great deal! We were on Allure on Jan 3, 2014. :teeth: Oasis and Allure are both amazing, with tons to do. i think on most royal cruises there are meetups every day or two for passengers 19-21 years old, so that should be good for your daughter.

there's so much to do, it's hard to give general advice, but i would definitely read the cruise critic review of the ship to get an overview, and would recommend reserving your shows ahead of time if you care about getting good seats. the comedy show is in a very tiny venue and pretty much the only way to get in is with a reservation; any other shows you can do standby but the seats may not be the greatest. the aqua show and the ice show are musts. in addition to the ice show that you can reserve in advance, there is a second ice show based on the movie "how to train your dragon" ; if you've seen the movie, it's a really well-done show.

my hint to starting your vacation stress-free -- when you board, instead of following the masses to the windjammer (the buffet), head to central park and eat at giovanni's table. it's $15/pp, but it's so nice to eat in a relaxed atmosphere without schlepping your luggage around the buffet area. they also have the best lasagna ever. :) also, the cafe promenade is open something like 23 hours/day and has really good little sandwiches and baked goods for free, and there's a pizza place called sorrento's that's also open late which has ok pizza but also some good snacks and sandwiches.

if you're a drinker, look into the drink packages. if the alcohol ones aren't worth it to you, they also have a soda-only package that allows you to use the coke freestyle machines, and a package called royal replenish that includes almost all non-alcoholic drinks, including sodas, bottled water, fresh oj at breakfast, virgin cocktails, and specialty coffee and frappuccino-type drinks at the cafe promenade. these packages are one thing that disney doesn't have that i wish they did - it's so nice to order whatever i want and know it's already paid for and the price doesn't matter.

speaking of paying, one thing that's different about royal and disney is that if you purchase a drink package or pre-reserve a shore excursion, royal charges your credit card at the time of purchase. you can generally reserve everything before final payment, though. so, just some differences to be aware of.

if you have any specific questions, just ask!

We were looking for a cruise for next spring when our kids will be almost 11 and 6.5 years and we had narrowed it down to Disney Fantasy or Royal's Allure. The itinerary was just about the same, similar stateroom (although we like Disney's washroom), and comparble ships. Well for $2000 difference (and now it's closer to $3000 with the CAD to US exchange rate), we went wtih Allure. We have sailed on Disney Magic and also on older Royal ships. The Magic was fun and very kid centered, but we love Royal ships...very elegant, modern and family centered. There is so much to do and the Oasis class looks amazing with the different neighbourhoods, shows (Broadway, Aqua shows, etc). We are super exicted. I'm sure you're really enjoy.

We loved the Oasis after being on Disney and it is still our kids favorite boat! You have gotten some good advice here, but I would add that we loved Johnny Rockets for breakfast. It was usually very quiet and such a change of pace from the Windjammer or main dinning rooms.

Also, we found that the flow rider and zip line had virtually no lines first thing in the morning. We rode the zip line over and over for the first 30 minutes never waiting in line. The same is nearly true for the flow rider, however I believe the flow rider opens first, but you can't have a wet bathing suit for the zip line, so we alternated days.

We also loved having lunch at the cafe in Central Park. I didn't think I would care for Central Park, but it was one of my favorites. They have a behind the scenes tour twice in the morning and it was a lot of fun!

We just booked Allure this morning using The b1 get 1 50% off. We priced out the Fantasy yesterday for Feb 2017 (aft deck 10, huge verandah) and it was $600 more for 2 adults. Very excited! After 7 Disney cruises, I think it will be fun to try something new.

Allure is a really nice ship! Are you on the Eastern or Western route? If you are on Western, you will go to Labadee which is Royal's private island/beach. It is lovely! Lots to do. They have a lunch buffet just like Castaway does. Previous Posters have given a lot of great advice, so I don't have much to add. Sounds like there are several of us on here that have sailed Allure, so if you have questions I'm sure you can get some answers here too. You'll get a ton of answers at cruise critic!

We just booked during the 30% deal - saved nearly $2k on balcony stateroom by sailing Allure over Fantasy for nearly identical itinerary. We appreciated being able to pay in Canadian dollars to avoid extra conversion charges, too. However, we are hoping we made the right choice. We are super excited, and slightly nervous, as this is only our second cruise ever. Our first was a couple years ago on Carnival Imagination where we discovered we like cruising but really disliked the atmosphere of Carnival. They advertised the sailing as family-friendly, but in reality, no so much. We are hoping Allure will provide much more of what we are looking for at a price we can afford. Our kids are younger (7 and 9) but we just couldn't manage the price of DCL (even though Star Wars Day at Sea was soo tempting). We are adding days at WDW pre- and post- cruise to get our Disney fix for less than the price difference between the two cruiselines.

Our DD was 9 when we did the Oasis and she LOVED it! Loved all the extra activities and the pools! She also loved the planned activities in the clubs and must have rode the carousel 20 times with her cousins.
We did the Fantasy last year when she was 10, almost 11- she liked being to go into Edge, but overall ranks the Fantasy and the Oasis as equal. She really noticed the lack of pools on Fantasy.

She also really liked the Hairspray show (it will be different on your cruise of course) , diving show, ice show.

You will have a blast!

That is fantastic to hear, DnA2010! My kids are both huge swimmers so the pools on the oasis class were a big draw. My husband and I love shows, so we're pretty excited about the entertainment. Just got a bit worried when I heard several people say RC is better for older kids and teens, because my kids aren't in that 'older kid' age yet.

Lollipop's Mom, we have booked two non-DCL cruises. And, we are sailing on the Wonder for the westbound Panama Canal cruise in 20 days. We have been on 20+ DCL sailings and decided to try Royal and MSC. These cruises are definitely out of my comfort zone.

Jan
P.S. you and I cruised on the Magic in 2009!

I am just jealous your Allure cruise is 6 mos earlier than mine. I'm on her June 25. The wait is going to simply KILL me!

ENJOY!!

I too have booked the Allure after several Disney cruises. I'll be travelling with a 5 year old and am concerned about how she will like it. Very happy to see that other Disney cruisers like it so much. Also thank you for the above tips. So much to learn.

We have been on both Oasis class ships 2x and love them so much! you will have a great time
