Roxymama's 5k to Marathon, Time to Collect Another Castle

Morning running definitely takes getting used to. When I started getting up earlier for my runs I was so groggy ... but now I'm getting better about it.

In terms of the November race decision - the Hot Chocolate series is supposed to be a lot of fun, but remember that there's no medal for the 5K (I'm pretty sure the medal is for the 15K only), so if what's most important is the medal, go for a Turkey Trot that has one.

I'm the same as you with running at night - between traffic and being alone and sidewalk issues, I'm just not comfortable with it. So I don't think you're at all crazy.

I do not have a run to report since my last post. I've fallen off my training a bit this week and really have not racked up many miles. On Wednesday I did get out for a long walk with the family which was so nice and much needed. Thursday I had sales meetings all day and night. So I needed the extra time in the morning to look my best (too bad I don't wake up looking perfect) and then I was out until late having corporate schmooze drinks/dinner. This morning I woke up to a power outage and so maybe I will need to get my butt to the treadmill tonight. I actually think that would be a really good thing. I will hang out with my little lady and then go at 8.
Tomorrow I have to work from 6am to 2pm and then I race on Sunday...so tonight I RUN!

This week has been rough emotionally due to things in my family with health that are beyond my control...but running helped a lot earlier this year during the same kind of situation. It's a good distraction ann then also a good time for solo contemplation.

NOW for something more light-hearted....My hubby sent me an email that today is halway to St. Patrick's Day and so the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle is allowing early entry for first 8,000 people at a discount. So I have officially signed up for my first 8k in April of 2016! I don't hear about too many 8ks, seems like a distance that I will like. And a good stepping stone to the 10k I signed up for in July of 2016.
So I guess this means I have to keep running after my Jan disney race :)

@SarahDisney You are right about no medals for the 5k at Hotchocolate...there is chocolate though and a pretty amazing looking hoodie instead of a t-shirt. Decisions decisions. Who am I kidding...I'll probably end up doing a turkey trot too. Probably holding a live turkey for some extra medal and dressed as a pilgrim for an additional medal while running backwards for a fourth medal?

image.jpg image.jpg So this weekend has been crazy but I added another run to my resume!

Friday night on the way home from work we had flash floods and insane storms all night.
I spent Saturday working inventory at my work starting at 6am. I'm used to being in a desk and this was 8 hours (with a lunch break thank god) on my feet in steal toe/steel metatarsal heavy boots climbing around a steelyard. Ooooof. Two baby toe blisters later and I was wondering why I'd agreed to do "mandatory inventory." I was beat!

But fast forward to this morning for The Great Pumpkin Race!
My friend had run it the day before (it's a race offered two days in a row) and posted that the course was total mud. She'd lost her shoes in the corn maze. We also got an email from the organizers saying not to wear our good shoes.
I scrapped any plans to wear anything cute and grabbed some sneakers from circa 2001 that I bought for walking at Disney way back when. They were white behemoths. I say "were" because "spoiler alert" they wouldn't make it home with me. Luckily the race was at 10 am (4 waves 15 min apart starting at 10 and we were in wave 1) so we got to sleep a little later than usual for race days. My mom met us at the farm to hang out with my daughter while we ran.
My hubs decided to do the Tough Pumpkin option with me. For a few extra bucks you get a pumpkin that they weigh and it becomes your best friend, cause you have to carry that thing throughout the race to receive a special medal. We each got 3lbs-ers. I grabbed ones with good stems to give some holding options. I mostly went with football hold.
The first 100 feet of the starting line was pure mud. Like "get stuck in" mud. We just hoped that would be the worst of it. Hahahahahaha.
(It wasn't)
The first two miles were through open farm and offered quite a bit of hills. There were parts that reminded me of running on sand (not real easy) and parts that were smoother and much easier. Nothing as easy as roads which is all I'm used to. My hubby told me to go ahead of him a bit. I should mention that I choose not to run with anything but my pumpkin. So no gps/phone/music. I'm kinda glad. Still like my music for road runs, but I needed all my focus on everyone around me and the ground.
I had taking a few walk breaks through the 2 miles but didn't feel one ounce of bad about it. No sense getting hurt for no reason.
The second mile was probably the easiest terrain and my hubby agreed making up good time there. But then the corn maze approached and who would have known what was waiting for us. Ever been in quicksand? Me neither, but I'm guessing it was like this. To say the last mile was easily over 20 min is being conservative. People were trying to hang as close to the corn as possible, single file, trying not to get stuck...cautiously running any dry parts. It was insane. Lots of laughter and cursing heard all over. And then my shoes succumbed to the mud! My feet came right out my very well tied shoes. My feet covered in mud at this point, I see a girl run by in her socks. And then I decided to just "Leg it Go" and had my Elsa moment...but the mud version of Elsa. I picked up my shoes in one hand, my pumpkin in the other, and I ran through the mud like a crazy person. When I eventually hit mile 3 my socks were so heavy with mud they were starting to slip off. I was only holding my shoes thinking that at some point we'd be out if the maze and I could "wipe them off" and put them back on. Hahaha
At this point I decided I was gonna run through the finish smiling with my pumpkin and shoes held high. And that's what I did to some very big applause and laughter from spectators. I found my mom and daughter who said " take a bath dude" and got my medals. One for finishing, one did holding a pumpkin, none for holding my shoes.
I saw my hubby exiting the maze and went to see him cross the finish. He was only 3 min behind me and was still inside his shoes. We were having a silly time about it. I imagine earlier this year something like this would have made me frustrated and sad. Now I'm an insane runner person and was just excited to have a funny running story and something else to say I accomplished.
We had brought towels and clean shoes luckily. we got free cider and pumpkins and had a nice time. I'd recommend doing these races but ONLY if you wait to register day of IF there was no rain the week before.
Final time? I came in 73rd place of just under 700 people...in 43:16! I think it was the socks that made me fast at the end. Haha
My hubby was 46 something and also up there in the rankings. Super proud of him! Mostly for being better than me at keeping on his footwear!
I think the winner came in a 29 something. I literally have no idea how he did that. Maybe he wore cleats? I'll attach pics because I'm too tired to look up how to imbed them in the post. I promise to learn that soon!

Update: I'm 162 out of 678. I was 73rd in my wave of 200. I'll still take that :)

Here's a link to a YouTube of a drive video from today's race. We heard him buzzing above us and saw the drone at the start. Kinda cool!

Question for the lady-folk out there. My pants are currently too big, YAY! But I'm trying to find a good place to check out for new dress pants for work. People are starting to make fun of my "floppy pants." They can be on the casual end of work-wear. I'm looking for something a little bit more slim fit but still makes room for a small mom-tummy and ample backside (TMI?)
My issue is that I'm hovering between a 12 and a 14. Pants will either be too big in the waist or fit right in the waist and too big in the leg.

Anyone have good tips on places for curvy gals who are not currently in the plus-sizes but still on the larger-end of the misses sizes? I'm 5'8"+ as well.

Wouldn't it be great if we could all just wear yoga pants to work everyday? God-bless you all that can!!!

Oh and unrelated shout-out to my DH. He lost 14 lbs so far and bought a new bike. He biked 13.1 miles on Saturday and 6.7 this morning before work. He's doing this along with his running. I think he'd like to try a sprint duatholon or triatholon sometime. He's making me very proud!

I hope all the family stuff is working out okay!

Congrats on signing up for your first 8K - that's a great stepping stone between the 5K and 10K.
I'm with you on the Hot Chocolate - if there was one closer to me, I'd do the 5K just for the chocolate and swag. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the lack of medal (personally, I think the jacket makes up for the lack of medal).
Although I will say ... I feel like carrying a live turkey during a race is not the best of ideas for the turkey. PETA would probably protest that race. But if you find a race that gives you a medal for dressing like a pilgrim, you absolutely have to do it! It's not like you can ever have too many medals...

That pumkin race sounds a little crazy, but I'm glad you finished it and had fun doing it. It's always nice when you get applause and laughter from the spectators ... I'd probably also be clapping and laughing if I saw someone finish holding their pumpkin and shoes!

In terms of pants ... I can't help much because I don't wear pants, but I will say that when I'm shopping for skirts (which are a little easier to buy sometimes) I usually like to go to department stores that have many different brands and try as many as I can until I find one that's perfect - and then once I find my favorite pair, I stick with that brand as much as I can.

And super yay to your DH! He's really doing awesome! I think a triathalon would be a great goal for him.

@SarahDisney We are hopeful on the family front. A close member had cancer earlier this year and "beat it" but a new form has appeared and so chemo may start as early as this week. So my focus has been family, family, family and I'm just really happy she has so many loving people in her life to rally around her. Really puts into laser focus how I should be not stressing the small things and how grateful I should be for my health and my friends/family, etc. Not always easy to remember during life's daily stresses. It's also amazing how supportive she is of my running even while she is going through this.

Also, I promise not to race with any live turkeys this year! I don't need a medal for a race, but I certainly like collecting them. Same with the shirts. Mostly because I'm just a natural collector of things. I like trinkets and souvenirs and momentos of events...what can I say? It's the reason my Christmas tree is covered in ornaments from places I have visited. Also I like shiny pretty things :) Give me all the shiny things "grabby hands"!!!

So here's my plan for the next two weeks.
Tues: (that's today) Run either 3 miles or 30 minutes near, but not at race pace depending on how I feel.
Thur: 2 mile "shake-out run"
Sat 9/26: St. Xavier Cougar Run 5k...attempting a PR if only by 1 second. We shall see. I'm not feeling 100% confident since my training has slipped a bit. I think how I do tonight will help ease some doubt.
Tues & Thur: same as above
Sat 10/3: Ditka Dash 5k. This one's gonna be a silly one. Hoping to take a bunch of pictures and just have a fun time.
Then no races until November!!! Likely will try to pick a new plan to maybe build some distance back into my weekend runs since my weekends have been dominated by 5k races lately.

I'll report back :)

I made it through steps one and two of getting through this week which was to run on the treadmill Tuesday and Thursday. Then I realized I never updated my journal. So here goes the most exciting report of your lives!!!

Tuesday: I walked for 5 minutes on the old 'mill to just let me legs remember what that felt like. The whole time I was struggling with my iphone and headphones because it kept playing the first 10-15 seconds of a song and then cutting out. I was like WHYYYYY?
I was thinking it was my headphones fault but later realized it was my phones connection in the gym. I deleted all my itunes-owned music off my phone a while ago to leave space for baby videos and apps and pictures, because I now use itunes radio. Well, note to self...I should probably load at least an hour of music back onto my phone for these situations!!! So I just watched the Voice.
But I did run 2.5 miles after my walk and did my normal 5 minute walk cool down.
Had the classic case of time feeling like it takes FOREVER on a treadmill when same amount of time does not feel as long outside. Just gotta get used to that.

Thursday: Music fixed. Ran 2 miles with an extra .5 miles of walking sandwiched on the ends. Didn't want to do too much with my race on Sat. I race better on non-tired legs.
Started 10 min at 5.5 speed.
Then switched to 6 speed
Then a min at 7 speed before working back down to cool down
Felt like I pushed myself without pushing too too hard.
Also day-dreaming is the only thing that can get me through treadmill runs. This time the nation was counting on me to keep running to power the country or something and everyone had the live feed of me on their tvs...that I was powering...I don't even know...I'm weird. I need to finally download some podcasts or something.

Final thoughts of the day:
A woman near me was running a full on 10.3 mph speed when I was walking out (I couldn't help myself from looking) and I wanted to just stand next to her and start cheering like I was at a sporting event but I thought that probably was a bad idea. I'm glad my attitude has changed from being intimidated and scared of and slightly mad/jealous at these fast people and now I'm just really impressed with them. Even if I'll never be them exactly I can appreciate how hard that is to get yourself to that level because I've been working my booty off for months just to feel comfortable doing what I am doing.

Everyone have a good weekend! I'll report back after my next 5k on Saturday. There is no theme and no crazy swag and I'm just walking across the street to it. I'm having doubt again that I can PR like I wanted to because my focus has not been on training like it should, my focus has been all over the place. But I'm just going to try my best.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!!!!

Sorry it's been AGES since I commented but I've still been following along!

First to answer @dancingtodisney questions...It's a Sparkle Athletic skirt that I bought for Halloween races but wore it because it matched the race shirt so well and came in the mail the day before. It's not attached to the shorts, so you can wear whatever you want underneath (it's kinda see-through.) I have not ever worn the actual race shirts to the actual race but this one was white and it was going to be HOT and I thought it was cute. So it was a last minute "costume" choice. I paired it with my Chicago flag headband since we were running downtown. Also, no cheesecake this time...instead a giant stack of French Toast was my celebration meal.

Oh cool I will check them out! French toast sounds awesome! I decided to go for Mc Donalds after my half yesterday and it was the best big mac I've ever had... just really hit the spot!

(I figured out how to use "bold" and "font size" guys...my journal is really coming into the 21st century now.)

Hahaha LOVE this :lmao:

While we were waiting for the family to arrive to the restaurant our finish times were posted and I finished at 29:56! All I could think was A) OMG I really did it and B) thank goodness I yelled at myself to stop that few steps of walking nonsense.

Fantastic 5K time! Really well done!

Question: do you find it takes you longer to run a mile on the TM than outside? I tend to be more conservative with my speed on the TM (generally not going above 6.5 mph.)

I always run slower on a threadmil, no idea why

WELL DONE ON THE PUMPKIN RACE!! That sounds INSANE! I once did a run a muck challenge and that was super muddy as well. You got a really good time for the conditions!

How is this week looking for you?

Have you decided on your 5k outfit for Disney? Not sure if you mentioned that before...

Thanks for reading through all my updates! I'm working on my update now from this past weekend's 5k because I am insane and now seem to have a race every weekend. But Spoiler Alert...I PR'd. So stay tuned for that update...

I did decide on my Disney outfit. I am basically going for a Epcot Spaceship Earth silver glitter-bomb of an outfit...that is also a throwback to Future World Minnie Mouse from the 1980's. So I have a silver shirt already with 1980's Minnie screen-printed on it. I've ordered my silver sparkle skirt and am going to go looking for some silver metallic leggings and multi-colored leg warmers as well. I also need to track down a sparkly Minnie mouse headband which should not be too hard, and add on a multi-colored bow that matches Minnie's. I maybe won't be too hard to miss when I am out there on the course?! Hopefully I don't end up looking too crazy :)

St. Xavier Cougar 5k Race Report
cougar2.jpg

I woke up on Saturday morning feeling pretty good about my run, but as always with the nervous stomach. As someone who can put away food when I want to...it's odd for my body to basically be saying "don't feed me anything...I don't want anything to eat at all." So I forced down half a granola bar and a bottle of water.
My #19 bib was ready to go. I'm a huge Chicago Blackhawks fan and our Capt Jonathan Toews wears that number. I geeked out about that. I always have low numbers because my last name is alphabetically almost always at the top of registration lists. Makes me feel all "elite" :)
I threw on my new South Side Irish White Sox shirt (from the clearance rack at the ballpark!) and my Chicago flag head-band and my family headed outside. The race was taking place only about a 15-20 minute walk from my house which was nice because the anxiety about parking or finding the race was non-existent. The weather was a perfect 67 degrees, not too sunny, slight breeze.
And the walk also loosened up my legs quite a bit.
The run was being held during a local college's homecoming festivities so there was a lot set up for a family to do. My husband and daughter set up a spot just past the starting line to cheer me on and then they were going to go have fun while I ran.

I am proud to say that my App and my Music worked perfectly this time. My game-plan was to start with what my body felt was a good start and then wait to hear what my app told me my .25 mile pace was. I'd adjust based on that but wanted to be around a 9:15-9:20 pace if I could muster it. At .25 miles I was at an 8:46...a little fast but good start. I eased just a little and found myself behind the women's basketball team, all wearing bright green shirts and running behind their coach. I remembered seeing them last year when we were spectators for my father-in-law's run. I hung with them for awhile and I heard their coach shout that they were pacing for 30 minutes and to keep together. I wanted to be faster than that so I made my move around them and did not see them again.

I loved this course. It had so many turns throughout the neighborhood and I was familiar with all the streets so I knew how far away I was from everything at all times. No HILLS! Really flat. And I even ran the tangents I thought very well (glad I did some googling on tangent running.) I think I will take a course with lots of turns and changes over a straight out and back any day...I get so demoralized when I see the finish line off in the distance a mile away. It's easy to talk yourself into walking or slowing up when you see the next "thing" is so far off. Here, every turn was basically my next "thing" and I just kept checking off every little turn as I did them.
Since I didn't mess up my App this time I have REAL data to report!!
Mile 1 9:05
Mile 2 18:33 (9:28 pace + .24)
Mile 3 27:58 (9:24 pace - .04)
3.1 - my app said 28:50 but my chip time said 28:57 My app said I ran 3.14 so my guess is I hit start too soon OR I didn't run the tangents exactly perfectly...but still pretty darned good :)

I will be honest I was feeling the "OMG How much farther, I can't finish this" pull at 2.5 miles like usual BUT I fought through it and just kept plowing along and tried even to increase my speed. Even attempted to sprint that last .1 miles...my version of sprinting that is. Which is really fast jogging :)

My cheerleaders (the hubby and kiddo) checked out the balloon animal guy and the marching band. There was a bounce house but had too many big kids in it. I even got my own balloon animal too. I had to say this was the best set up of fun things to do of any of the races I have done and I have done some pretty big Chicago ones. There was a line people could get in to get Jimmy John sandwiches and pizza and prizes...for free. I checked the leader-board that was posted and I had come in 7th in my division!!! A top three is still a long way away as third place was in the 24 minute range, but that still made me feel good.
cougar1.jpg

Then we watched the ducks at the duck pond, walked to the campus startbucks and I stuffed my face with a Chocolate Croissant and a Pumpkin Spice Latte before we walked home.
cougar3.jpg

This is the most tired I've ever been after a race, but also really immensely proud of myself. My hubby mentioned how much easier it is to wrangle the kiddo while I run when I finish this fast! I returned the favor the next day when he PR'd himself at a local high school's 5k that he found online because he is an awesome runner guy now too :)!! What a change for our family in just 6 months.

Stats from my race:
28:57
191st place overall of 605 people
61st for all females
7th for females 30-34

This week's schedule:
Tuesday: Run on the treadmill
Thursday; Run on the treadmill
Saturday: The Ditka Dash at Soldier Field in Chicago followed by a baby shower at a fancy hotel (Can I do it all? We shall see!)
The NO RACES for at least a little while.

Great job on the 5K! I'm really impressed that you're making progress with every race and continuing to do really well!
It's great to see that your hubby is keeping up with the running too. So ... when will you start entering the little princess in kids runs? (My dad did that with us when we were little ... I pretty much always finished last)

Thanks Sarah! It's funny that you mention kid races because I had been hemming and hawing over the Disney marathon weekend kids races. I like that they have a wide age range so she wouldn't be over-ran by big kids. But they are at a pretty odd time of the day on a day we planned on being in the parks on a relatively short trip. I think bouncing too many places will equal a cranky toddler. But I definitely want to do one in the future for her.
Some of our local races have had kids races but no age-groups, so lots of bigger kids. Every single race it's just a mound of crying kids at the start line that got "trampled or tripped up." We did one Easter Egg hunt after a race that my father-in-law did this year and she got steam-rolled by the parents of kids (not even the kids), lost her shoes and started crying. So we took her to the side of the chaos and she got enough eggs...you should have seen the parents going crazy like hyenas trying to get their kids the most eggs.
I've asked her a couple times if she wants to do another and she's been not on board.
Our fun solution though...she does her own "races" vs Mommy and Daddy usually in the parking lot or parks by the start/finish line. And then she asks for our medals when she beats us. She also does driveway races and inside the house races (yikes) and asks for medals. So she definitely likes it. It's just tough around those giant 5 year olds and parents :)

Edited to note to myself to be a very considerate parent when I do end up helping her at kids races :)

Oh and I did get my treadmill run in last night. I downloaded a run disney podcast but failed to realize it was from Sept of 2014 until I was listening...oops. But it was still interesting enough and had a woman who has 80! disney medals, running since 2005 before rundisney had an official name. She was also talking about how they used to have a partial iron-man type event there? To be honest I always zone out during podcasts when I run so I only catch things here and there.
I ran 2 miles and walked before and after. Will likely do something similar on Thursday before my final 5k of this crazy 5k spree.

Then I'll get back on a more normal training schedule to try to add some distance.

Also I think I've now seen every episode of the Voice via gym tv, but have not heard a single word or song since I'm just listening ot my own music/podcasts. haha

So there's an office pool for people to lose weight and the buy in is $60....AND THEY SAID I WAS TOO SKINNY TO BE IN IT!!!

Well, ok! So that's a first. Maybe this running thing is changing me more than I see in the mirror. I do not weigh myself but I seem the same, at least to me. I did size down to a 12 in pants last night at Target.

Well, I guess small victory for today.

Though, I will fully admit that I am eating a giant cookie.

The Ditka Dash 5k race recap
ditka1.jpg
In case you ever wanted a giant picture of me wearing a fake mustache...then today's your day!
We signed up to run the annual Ditka Dash this Saturday. Mike Ditka is a former NFL player and coach and legend in Chicago. He coached the Chicago Bears to a championship in 1985 and has maintained cult status among Chicagoans ever since. He also owns a bunch of restaraunts/bars and is the reason for the Saturday Night Live "Superfans" skits from the 90's. He started a great lineage of championship coaches who sport epic moustaches (Jackson, Guillen, Quenville...)
So when my mother-in-law told us there is a 5k where everyone dresses like Ditka and its just one big party...well that sounded perfect. Did I mention that in grade school I had a guinea pig named Ditka...we later found out she was pregnant and changed her name to Pepper...but she was always Ditka to me. When she passed away while I was at grandparents camp, my dad said she died of a little polish sausage heart attack. (that will only make sense to anyone who is familiar with the SNL skits.)

Fast Forward to Race Day. It was COLD and WINDY Saturday morning. Like 20-30 mph winds. And it was drizzling rain. I decided to skip my cute sparkle skirt outfit and opted for long pants and long-sleeves. Warmth over cuteness. We were meeting at my in-laws who live across from Soldier Field which was the site of the race. Soldier Field is where the Bears play. Getting out of our car was insanely difficult because the wind was that crazy. Papers flying through the air, my dress for later that day was shooting straight up in the air attached to the coat hanger I was carrying. We received an email from the race that said
"

We are currently at a level YELLOW (Moderate).

30 mph wind gusts coming off the lake...what would Ditka do?

Go strong, the race is still on!"

My father-in-law decided he was going to sit this one out even though he registered. I guess the hubby and me are slightly crazy so we said if he'd give us a ride to the start, that we'd still try running it. We put on our race t-shirts that looked like little sweaters with shirts and ties, donned our fake mustaches and our aviator glasses (I ended up not wearing the mustache to race in but my hubby had it on the whole time.) Thankfully the wind died down by the time we were walking to the start. My hubby picked up a cool Bears sweatband and put that on, to look very Jim McMahon-era awesome.
There would be three waves since there were 4000 more runners than last year. I still have no idea of total runners since this race is un-timed. They just have a clock at the start and the end.
They had corrals up but they were super informal and we could choose. So we decided we'd just park ourselves at the back of the first corral and choose being over with the race and out of the cold over anything else. We walked further up when they moved the corral tape more forward to avoid waiting in a the next corral. Sorry fast runners...but it turned out fine. Most people weren't going for speed.
AND THEN MIKE DITKA SHOWED UP! The MAN himself got up on the starting line stage and said "nice weather, you could run all day, BUT don't take all day" Was awesome.
And then we were off. There was a log jam through the start line because people wanted Ditka pics. But that's ok, our plan was no plan. Just run together...have fun...and cross the finish.
Race highlights were going under McCormick Place convention center with DJ's and party lights, running past mustache aid stations, cigar decks, and aviator wash tables. That literally no one was stopping at because we were all cold and damp. Running along the lake was crazy since the waves were epic and splashing against the shore and throwing water and mist on all of us. Neither of us had headphones in or were paying any attention to time or pace.
The costumes people were wearing were pretty great. I think almost everyone had something Bears or Ditka related on. So people watching while running was kind of fun.
I tried to be a good running citizen by jogging next to hubs when room allowed and then going in front of him single file when it got crowded especially during the last mile. I felt 100% great the whole race. Could talk the whole time and really the only hard part was running through that wind during mile 3! THAT WIND!!! The sound of our numbers on our shirts flapping was like little jet engines.
When we crossed the finish line we held hands in victory. Our time was 35 something maybe??? I honestly am not 100% sure. I'll have to ask hubs what his GPS that was in his pocket said. But that sounds right.
We only stopped to walk during the water breaks and jogged the rest of the time. It was not a personal record for either of us but still pretty good for running in basically a wind storm and just having fun.

And then we got the coolest sparkly Ditka head medals and our free Miller Lites. Or "Da Beer" as the signs said. (all the signs started with "Da" ...Da Start, Da Finish, Da Mile 1, Da Merchandise, etc)

We started walking back to his in-law's condo and then grabbed a cab because we were done with that windy gross weather. I had to go to baby shower afterwards but the hubs and his dad celebrated with some pot roast nachos at "Ditka's" the restaraunt. The place was full of Ditka dashers apparently.
But I got to have some lovely brunch, mimosas and coffee at the Pennisula Hotel for the baby shower...and a giant tower of tiny cakes!!! And yes, I showered and dressed like a normal woman and left the mustache at the condo :) And then the Bears won yesterday. It was a Ditka miracle.

So thoughts after the race...I think I could do an 8k or 10k at that pace and be ok. I felt like I could keep going. Makes me have more confidence that by the time April rolls around I will be ready for my 8k. I made a pact with myself on @SarahDisney 's page that I'm going to attempt an 8k in my neighborhood by myself this month. This was also I think the first time I didn't have the 2.5 mile "when is this over" feeling. And I really liked running with my hubs instead of by myself...also running without music wasn't so bad after-all. And my final thought is that Chicago weather is insane.

Da Dash sounds like it was fun, despite the wind. Wind really bothers me while I'm running, so I'm impressed that you still went out and did it.

And if Da Bears won it was definitely a Ditka miracle - they need a miracle to win:duck:

I'm really happy that you're going to try to do an 8K this month. I think you can do it and it's really inspiring to see you working hard and challenging yourself!

I totally meant to run yesterday outside...and I didn't :(

I took a half day off work before I was going to drive to the city to go see some hockey with the hubby. I think I mis-calculated how much time a half-day is. It's not as long as I'd hoped. By the time I got home it was nearing 1pm. I had to go to the drugstore to get baby supplies and dinner stuff for my dad (who was babysitting) and then went home and cooked lunch. By the time I ate it and gave myself enough digestion time I had two choices...run and be a frantic insane person trying to get ready in time for my hockey date OR not run and be only semi-frantic trying to get ready for my date. I chose option two.
I was hoping for an awesome relaxing half day at home filled with running, and cooking and shopping and drinking coffee while reading and...

Hope I'm not the only one who this happens too. Back on the treadmill for me tonight. I HAVE TO GO! Because I skipped out on going on Tuesday since I figured I'd be running outside on Wed. Oops

Nothing new to report on the running front BUT! I was excited to get an email from the Ditka Dash that pictures of myself (and hubby) were FREE for download. That's kind of cool since lots of times I do not want to pay a ton for marathonfoto type pictures. So I weeded out the ones where I don't have dead-drunk-fish face and one where I'm pretty sure I was mid "Wooo" and it's just not pretty. I love the ones where I was slightly ahead of hubby (being a good single file team so people could pass us) and he's pretty much photo-bombing me. Also, notice all the Ditkas :)

My next topic is figuring out what race to do in November. Hot chocolate is still up there but there may be other weekends that work better for us. Or local ones that are easier to navigate than a big city race. So I'll post again this weekend after my "long" run and some race research. If anyone is familiar with a good November race or Turkey trot type race in the Chicago-land area please let me know!
