Having a down day, no specific setback. I just feel like I'm never going to get there, ever! We're just treading water.

Hello Debt Dumpers! I started this journey with you months ago and then life just began to fall apart (literally one thing after another after another). My debt dumping has been at a stand still of monthly minimums as DH and I catch up on his former unemployment period. I was once also a diligent couponer and shared a train with some Disney buddies on the boards, but have since been booted off because even the post office is against me in taking 7+ days to deliver from MN to IL. :( It's a down in the dumps day but I hope to find new friends and get back on the right trail.

Welcome back!!! We all completely understand that unexpected things in life happens and derail us. Please feel free to vent here if you need to!! Being unemployed definitely hits you hard financially. It sounds like you were at least able to pay the minimum so that's a plus that you didn't fall behind paying your bills! Has your husband found new employment?

On track to pay off a store card this pay. My momentary meltdown a few posts above is over for now. :rolleyes1 Sometimes it's hard to keep my eyes on the prize!
It sure is. I had a bit of a meltdown yesterday. Not online but to dh. It felt like so many extra expenses came up and hit me at once. Funny how a night or 2 to sleep on it changes everything. I sat down and looked at everything, made a list, and funneled our snowball to those expenses. It sets us back a few weeks which is a bit disappointing but still not as bad as I first thought.

Treading water isn't sinking! You can do it!

I should have read the rest of the posts first... see, you totally can, haha! :)

Thats great - putting it on paper is my favorite way to get perspective. Whenever my husband impulse buys I make sure to let him know gently how much further back he pushed us... like that new lens he just HAD to buy for the trip this month after we discussed and agreed to leave the darn DSLR at home just two days prior... men and their toys sometimes! :crazy2:

Some progress has been made at my house. We have one card paid off and another one half off. Also got info from our health insurance that if we complete these three activities (two of which are required to keep the lowest deductible plan so we do them anyway) you get $450 in an HSA after March 31. My daughter is having a lot of dental work done so this will be an extra bonus to put towards that!

I leave Thursday to go on a short surprise trip to Florida to see my brother and nephew. My mom paid for flights and rental car and we are staying at my brothers. I have a set amount of cash I am taking that I hope to only spend.

Was feeling so proud that I spent about 10 minutes on the phone yesterday with cc companies and saved 160! One company wouldn't waive the annual fee, so I closed it. The other waived the 89 fee for the year. THEN I woke up today to discover that Disney has changed the AP structure. Now I need to buy DS a Platinum AP bc we are traveling during a blackout period. That will set us back and additional 120. One step forward...you know the drill.

Does your employer off a Flexible Spending Account? It's when they take $ out of your pay pretax (up to $2500) and hold it in an account and you use that $ to pay for qualified medical & dental costs. If the dental work is not urgent and can wait til after Jan 1, it's a good tax savings. You can't apply 2016 FSA dollars to procedures with a 2015 date of service though.
Dh & I both had the max of $2500 done for when both kids went into braces at the same time. They give us a visa card to make it easy and all of the $ is available to be used on Jan 1 which made it very convenient for us. We didn't have to scramble for the $3000 down payment.

Just jumping in here to thank you all for the info about YNAB. I had just gotten home from a big splurgy Disney vaca with my DD and was feeling guilty about the huge CC bill, which only got bigger later on this year with my son's wedding! I started with YNAB in June, and I love it! I have a little EF now, am working on building up my RDF's, and paying down the CC. The forums, videos and webinars are so helpful and I love having the mobile app to record right on the spot. Hopefully in another couple of years I'll be able to visit Disney again, and have it all budgeted ahead of time.

Sooo...... Murphy came to visit me in this nor'easter that we had. Luckily we didn't get the hurricane but I do have a small roof leak that will be getting repaired on Wednesday. I guess the bright side is - the roof didn't blow off!!
And I just got a call and my appraiser will be coming out tomorrow to look at the house - last time they only did a drive by appraisal so hopefully this one comes out good.

I know that I had the option of the FSA or HSA at my place of work. I chose the HSA because of the carry-over. It really depends on what/how you expect to have medical bills. If you know that you will need a large lump-sum early in the year (like the dental work) the FSA might be better as you get access to all of your contributions on Jan 1. But, if you think/feel/believe that you won't need early-in-the-year access, the HSA might work better since any contributions you make to it can carry forward to future years, where the FSA has to be completely used (I think by March 31 of the following year, but I could be wrong).

The essential difference between the two as I understand them is that FSA gives immediate access but is "use it or lose it", while the HSA slowly builds a reserve that you can keep until it is used up - even into retirement.

On a completely unrelated note - for those with family members with fins, fangs, feathers, or fur PetCo is celebrating their 50th year and has some really good sales through Oct 10. $5 of purchases of $50 or $15 of $75, plus lots of things are 10% off (or better) and most dog and cat foods are offering a free bag of treats with a purchase of a bag of food. I just bought about 3 more months of food and treats and saved a touch over 20% total (and I didn't even get the treats for free - one of my girls can't handle glutens and the food I buy was not one of the qualifying bags for free treats. If it had qualified, I would have saved about 30%). Since it was stuff I knew I needed to buy anyway, I figured now was the time to buy it.

Just wanted to share for others.

Yes, it really depends on your needs. From what I read about the HSA, at least at the hospital where I work, it was one of our options of health insurance plans. It provided minimal coverage but then puts $ into the HSA account to pay the OOP costs. With a family of 4 and a lot of sick visits/specialist visits, it felt like the $ amount wouldn't be nearly enough. It seemed to me that it was to encourage people to act as if they're spending their own dollars on health care instead of the guilt-free spending of the insurance company's dollars. ;) I have a coworker who is single and loves her HSA and how it keeps building more money. Definitely a smart choice for singles who are relatively young & healthy.
