Big Apple, Boardwalk, and Beach - Bullies and Wrap-up (The End!) (pg 44)

New York Botanical Garden

The next day we went to the New York botanical gardens (technically not in the city of New York, but still...). It’s in the Bronx, so I think it is technically in the city. I told her that she’d have to take a train to it, not a subway but a train, so I think she thought that it was outside of the city. Moving on. We had to take a train, so I got to see Grand Central Station, which is very maze-like, in my humble opinion.

Judy sent me this picture and said that they were on the train.

When we got there, they were having a special where all admission was free for everyone unless they wanted to go to the conservatory, which we did. So we paid extra for it, but it could work out for somebody else interested in the gardens.

My mom loves roses, so the first stop we made at the gardens was to the Rockefeller Rose Garden, which was not only beautiful but also quite fragrant.

We had taken quite a trek to get there, so we decided to break out the protein bars and water and sit for a bit. While my mother and I were sitting on a bench admiring the garden and eating, a woman came over and asked to sit with us. We said, “Sure, go ahead.” And she quickly started making conversation. Soon enough though, she asked if we had any food for her, too – which we declined. We hadn’t packed extra food anyway, but we were definitely not used to being asked for food so casually. She did not seem homeless or poor, so that confused us even more, but she just continued to chat genially with us until her family walked past and she joined them. I got a picture as she spoke to my mom:

We walked past dozens of trees with initials carved into them. As cute as that is, I feel like the carvers are tattooing our tree friends unwillingly. It ends up looking pretty strange.
And we risk them not coming to our aid the next time we’re attacked by orcs.

When we’d finally made the circle around the huge property, mom and I stopped for lunch at one of the garden restaurants. We both got pre-packaged salads and a drink. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture until we were almost finished, but here they are. Mine was a chickpea salad (finished) and my mom got a black bean one:

After lunch we made our way to the conservatory – aka the reason we paid for this visit. When it came into view we both were very excited, it was the dome shaped building pictured below.

Now, I’m a critic because I have been to Longwood Gardens hundreds (maybe not hundreds) of times.
I’d say it’s safely in the low double-digits. Longwood is beautiful. The New York Botanical Garden conservatory is very beautiful and is probably an equal match to that of Longwood (even though the landscape itself is not as stunning.)

So we entertained ourselves there, but began to get tired of all the walking. We decided to go back. As we left, we went through a nice little farmers market at the entrance to the gardens. My mom bought some delicious gluten-free food for the trip back to the hotel.
This next picture is obviously not the farmers market!

Enjoying your updates Glennbo and Marlene! You make me want to put NYC on my bucket list :-)

Okay...I have no idea what I'm doing anymore with all this new fangled technology on the DIS...I just want to say I'm enjoying reading your report!
Jordan !!! How great to see you, stop over on my Rosie Roams ptr and say Hi. Also any chance of you joing Liesa and many others next October ?????

Now after the excitement of seeing Jordans name I have to reply to your Conservatory / Botanical Gardens update . Your pix were great , I see why you paid the xtra . That women was odd, unless this is a New York thing:rolleyes::rotfl2:

Looks like a very impressive Botanical Garden. Not sure it would have made it on my list of things to see for my first short weekend in New York, but then I have ventured to Kew Gardens in London and enjoyed that a lot.

I've finally made it...sorry it's been crazy with PSU football season starting, and getting ready for our combo WDW/Disney Cruise vacation next month. Not to mention a new little Mouseketeer on the way! Can't wait to catch up!

The New York Botanical Gardens look beautiful! It looks like Marlene and Judy had a very nice time.

I look forward to see what you were up to when they were touring the gardens...

Hi Glenn!! I'm six pages late but i'm here!

What happened to the kids???!!!! They GREW!! I'm going to need you to make it stop. Because if they are growing up, it means I'm getting older....And we cannot allow this to happen. Fix it!

This video cracks me up. You are such a Dad! Love Marlene's face at the end.

Don’t say “storm” right now, with Joaquin off the coast. ;)

:boat: Thank goodness it went east but SC got all the moisture. :scared1:

Manhattan no but New York City yes. "The City" usually refers to Manhattan.

JORDAN!!!!!

:rotfl2: Usually - no eye contact and keep moving is NEW YORK but asking for Food? Nope never had that.

Another Place this New Yorker has never been too. :rotfl2: I guess I need a trip back as a tourist. :rotfl2:

It all looks beautiful - New York has so many amazing places. We have Gardens here too That I have never been too- Need to fix that. I am so glad the girls had a wonderful time.

Hey Jordan :welcome: Good to see you! I hope you're doing well!

Yeah, we're all in the same boat regarding the new tech of the DIS. I have to admit that there are some things that are easier, although it's a little confusing at first. Some other things I used to know how to do, I still haven't figured out.

Thanks! I hope you get to check it out sometime. Everyone should experience it at least once.

Good to see Jordan, right Rosie?! I'm not sure that Jordan and Liesa crossed paths that much. I think she may have started up right around the time that he took a hiatus.

Now after the excitement of seeing Jordans name

Understandably.

I have to reply to your Conservatory / Botanical Gardens update.

Yes, let's remember what we're here for. What are we here for?

Thanks. Yeah, like Marlene said, she wasn't a homeless person, just kind of foward. I probably should have put it in the update but the quote I remember them telling me was something to the effect of "Wow, that looks really good. Do you have one that I could have?" And they were like, "No, these are all we brought."

I agree, if it were solely my itinerary, it wouldn't have made the cut. But Marlene wasn't in favor of a harbor boat tour or some other things I proposed and instead asked about a garden specifically. It was her trip, so I sent her and Judy to the train station for that little side trip.

I've finally made it...sorry it's been crazy with PSU football season starting, and getting ready for our combo WDW/Disney Cruise vacation next month. Not to mention a new little Mouseketeer on the way! Can't wait to catch up!

All right! nittanyliongirl02 is here! :welcome: Wow, lots of congratulations to extend -- a new Mousketeer and a WDW vacation and Disney Cruise. That's awesome! Congratulations! Great news.

I took James to the Temple game, can you believe it. His first game that wasn't a Blue/White game. That was easily the worst I've ever seen my favorite team play. Absolutely no spark. It didn't even seem that they realized that they were behind on the scoreboard. And we had the most obnoxious Temple fan (student) behind us. I wanted them to do something on the field just to make him shut up, but they never did!

The New York Botanical Gardens look beautiful! It looks like Marlene and Judy had a very nice time.

It sounded like they enjoyed it.

I look forward to see what you were up to when they were touring the gardens...

It was sooo exciting! But there'll be food pictures so stay tuned.

Hi Glenn!! I'm six pages late but i'm here!

Hi Jen! :welcome: I'm glad you're here. 6 pages in is nothing! We're not even warmed up yet.

What happened to the kids???!!!! They GREW!! I'm going to need you to make it stop. Because if they are growing up, it means I'm getting older....And we cannot allow this to happen. Fix it!

Are you kidding? How do you think I feel?! And I'll be walking a daughter down the aisle next summer. Crazy!

This video cracks me up. You are such a Dad! Love Marlene's face at the end.

It's probably even worse than that -- I'm a dad/tourist at that moment!

:boat: Thank goodness it went east but SC got all the moisture. :scared1:

Yes, it could've been a lot worse I suppose. I wonder if goofyfan is still afloat.

Manhattan no but New York City yes. "The City" usually refers to Manhattan.

To be honest, I was trying to dissuade her, saying "You'd have to take a train to get there!"

:rotfl2: Usually - no eye contact and keep moving is NEW YORK but asking for Food? Nope never had that.

Oh, so my saying "Howdy!" to everyone wasn't the way to go? ;)

Yeah, like I said to Magdalene, it was Marlene's trip so she got to pick the sights to see.

Oh boy, can't wait to hear what you got yourself into while the girls were gone all day!

I still need to write the next one up, but I'm glad you're eagerly anticipating it. I hope you can stand the excitement.

The gardens look beautiful. GLad they had a nice time, even if the woman they encountered was a bit strange. Looking forward to more!

Hmmm.... lost my multi quote. And I'm lazy.

So... I'm glad to see that you felt the need to cut off Marlene to clarify the geography lesson about a part of a trip that you didn't even attend. :rolleyes1:rotfl2:

The botanical gardens looks lovely. If you're into that sort of thing. Which apparently Marlene and Judy are.

I can't believe the random lady asking for food. Then again, it doesn't really surprise me much when I think about it. I could totally see my wife's aunt doing something like that.

I only have a few minutes to pop in, but I'm glad the ladies enjoyed the garden. I'm sure you're glad you didn't have to enjoy it with them!

Nice garden pics! Pretty wild about the mooch lady Maybe she is a "little off?"

Wondering what happened in the city...
